Prozac withdrawal symptoms medication

Common Questions and Answers about Prozac withdrawal symptoms medication

prozac

Avatar f tn I remember something vaguley that the withdrawal of Prozac can bring on orginal symptoms and that they will pass with the withdrawal process. Or am I feeling like this because I need prozac and I should never have come off and never will come off?????? I also have the physical symptons of bloating , stomach cramps insomnia, vivd dreams etc but accept that these will go away in time. But the question is am I a chronicly unhappy person or is it just the withdrawal and it will pass?
Avatar f tn There are typically minor withdrawal symptoms that will go away. Speak to your psychiatrist about that as well. Its a matter of adjustment.
Avatar n tn The constant physical symptoms have ruined my quality of life. I feel terrible every day, but no one can or will try to diagnose my symptoms. Can these symptoms be caused by Prozac and are they permanent? I really want to stop this medicine because I'm having strange neurological symptoms (numbness in extremities, a weird gait when I walk, pain shooting up and down my spine and into my head and horrid ringing in the head and ears).
Avatar f tn Skipping doses can cause withdrawal, although this is less likely with Prozac than other ssris because it stays in the body much longer. When someone skips a dose, you just take the next dose -- doubling up can cause side effects. Prozac is one of the more stimulating ssris, and these drugs can cause odd thoughts especially in the young. Marijuana is a no no for most people with anxiety problems -- it tends to bring it out, though for some it is relaxing but not for most.
Avatar f tn Now since doing some research on the internet, I am wondering if he is experiencing withdrawal symptoms from the sudden onset and discontinuation of Effexor and Depakote, and maybe even serotonin syndrome from taking the Prozac with the Depakote? Please advise. Any information from another psychiatric professional would be extremely helpful!
Avatar f tn My guess is that this is the Effexor withdrawal, not the Prozac, as the Prozac will take about 4-6 weeks usually to start working. I also don't think it will help much with the Effexor withdrawal, as it's in a different class of drugs, no two drugs work the same or target the same neurotransmitter receptors, and you might get new side effects while getting used to the Prozac.
1472535 tn?1287684045 I have been on prozac for the last year and a half with no major problems The last few weeks I started feeling very agitated with constant panic attacks.
Avatar f tn I think you are right about the withdrawal symptoms from going from one med to the other without weaning off first. Thanks for your advice. Will look into going and seeing a psychiatrist for help with this! Thanks so much!
475307 tn?1209791613 OK, thanks anyway....
1472535 tn?1287684045 I think Prozac has the longest half life of any of the SSRIs, so I don't think being off of it a day would cause anything. I have a problem forgetting to take my meds, and my doctor told me that Prozac is good in that it stays in your body for quite a while, like 5 weeks or something after you stop taking it completely, so if you miss doses on it it's not as bad as if you missed on something else.
Avatar f tn Withdrawal from antidepressant/OCD medication, Luvox. I was relieved to see I am not alone with the struggle to quit my medication (AGAIN!). I actually laughed out loud (and it is so not funny-I'm miserable and so are all the folks trying to battle this war) when I read some of the comments pertaining to weaning off Paxil like elevator head and the legs that run on their own (my favorite, LOL!!) because I too am having these symptoms.
Avatar f tn I am taking Prozac, and I have read some articles saying that some doctors prescribe prozac for a month to help decrease the withdrawal symptoms from Lexapro, and then get off the prozac. I guess the Prozac doesn't seem to have such bad withdrawal effects. When I quit Lexapro cold turkey.. all I had were brain zaps and dizziness. When I quit the Prozac, i had occasional brainzaps, but that is all.
1422233 tn?1282701102 Prozac is not better for anxiety than other AD, it depends on you. I think what the doctor is trying to do is try Prozac because it's not a substrate of Pgp (P-glycoprotein, involved in the bioavailability of drugs) (unlike Paxil), so switching from Paxil to Prozac may be beneficial for nonresponders or when the medication is not therapeutic anymore. Paxil is an extremely potent SSRI, so it's one of the medications that can have severe withdrawal symptoms when discontinued.
1330182 tn?1279815900 Like cj29, I sympathize with your distress. I didn't have any problem discontinuing Prozac, but was taking a small dose of clonazapam at the same time, which may have helped. It is darn hard to figure out if anxiety and digestive issues are caused by the anxiety disorder or withdrawal from Prozac. My money is on the disorder. Can't believe hormone issues are the culprit. Always good to rule out physical sources of discomfort.
Avatar f tn I'm trying to get off Paxil by cross tapering with Prozac to minimize withdrawal symptoms. Right now I'm on 10mg paxil. but I'm not sure how to proceed? My doctor said to take 20mg prozac along with 10 paxil for a month which I don't agree with. Thats because I think if prozac stays that long in my system I will also have trouble getting off of it. So my plan is: Week 1) 10mg paxil 10mg prozac. Week 2) 5mg paxil 20mg prozac. Week 3) 0mg paxil 20mg prozac. then stop.
Avatar f tn Remeron is extremely sedating, while prozac can be stimulating, and you could still be in withdrawal as well -- you don't know because you went on another medication instead of slowly tapering and letting the withdrawal play itself out. Taking another class of medication might mitigate the feelings of withdrawal, but doesn't do anything physiologically to stop them. Obsessive thoughts is a classic side effect of Paxil, and of its withdrawal as well.
Avatar n tn Keep in mind that Prozac is different from the other medications you read about. Prozac stays in the body for a long time, and takes a month or two before any withdrawal would be noticed. Therefore, you won't see much information about Prozac withdrawal because if it happens it happens somewhere down the line, and would probably be misdiagnosed as a relapse, not withdrawal.
Avatar m tn About a week ago I stopped taking any and while I am still on the emotional high of a new relationship I am suffering many of the well documented withdrawal symptoms - brain freezes, sleeplessness, sweatiness, tearfulness etc etc etc. I have just started taking 5-htp 100mg daily and have also been taking vitamin supplements and omega-3 1500mg caps. In the past I have discussed with my doctor but this time I am on my own.
470885 tn?1326329037 First, a GP is not an expert on ssris. Even most psychiatrists haven't a clue. Second, all ssris have withdrawal problems, and although it's true Celexa has been easier on the whole than, say, Paxil, or Effexor, if you go on withdrawal websites you'll still see plenty of severe withdrawal problems. He's put you on Prozac because it's a long-lasting ssri, whereas all the others are very short lived in the body; usually they'll use liquid Prozac so they can wean slowly.
Avatar f tn Never been on it, but remember, we're all different. And don't rule out some continuation of Paxil withdrawal, since you didn't finish it, you medicated it. And since remeron and Prozac work differently, and since Prozac and Paxil work differently, no, taking one doesn't necessarily do anything about the withdrawal from the other except medicate it. It might work, but it might not.
Avatar m tn Could it be the lack of prozac or just the paws symptoms? I dont want to hop back on the prozac when it could just be the opiate withdrawl. I quit prozac because i dont want to rely on medication to be happy for the rest of my life. Has anyone experienced this type of completely freaking out about things after opiate use? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Avatar f tn You say you were on Lexapro for a long time? Is that right? How did you stop taking it, abruptly or a slow taper taking as long as you needed to (here's hoping Lexapro has a liquid, because one of the hard things about only needing such a low dose is it's hard to break pills to do a taper off). I'm asking because some of the effects you're having sound more like withdrawal effects than the usual start-up effects of Prozac.
Avatar f tn Hi all, So I was on Effexor for a few years and recently weaned off of it (a slow taper over several months), but the withdrawal was so bad for me that my pdoc put me on 10mg of Prozac. After a week she determined it wasn't the withdrawal anymore and that I was just depressed - she increased my dose to 20mg. I have now been on the Prozac for three weeks and I still feel pretty bad.
1288270 tn?1301287612 This either results in fewer withdrawal problems, or the withdrawal happens later down the road, maybe a month later. Lexapro leaves the body quite a bit more quickly, and so you are much more subject to a bad withdrawal by quitting abruptly. None of these should be quit abruptly, but the short half life ones especially so.
