Prozac vs lithium

Common Questions and Answers about Prozac vs lithium

prozac

Avatar n tn I really had no other side effects from either med. Lithium is more for mania and prozac for depression. I take a Lithium/Wellbutrin combo and it is awsome for me. Controls both sides pretty darn good! It is really trial and error with any med, it might or might not effect your libido. Just have to try and see. If it does, switch again! I know tegretol kills it too. So you might do better on Lithium or Prozac.
Avatar f tn The doctor started her on Lithium at the same time we were weening her. The Lithium must be taken with food and like prozac, it causes nausea in my child. She was on 1 pill 300 mg in the evening for a week. Then it was increased to 2 pills at the same time the effexor was decreased to 75 mg. This lasted a week. Then, we dropped the Lithium back to 1 pill because of the extreme nausea lately.

Avatar n tn My 15 yr. old daughter has been on Prozac since the end of December '08. At first it was for depression then after a month or so the Dr. thought she maybe Bipolar weened her off Prozac and put her on Abilify. Total disaster very bad reation after only 1 day. Stopped that went back to prozac for the last 1 1/2 months or so. She has just started showing strong signs again of manic and obsesive behavior. Dr.s thinking prozac has backfired.
Avatar m tn Hi, I am taking 60mg Prozac in the morning (past 4 weeks) and then 100mg Lithium (down from 200) with .5mg Clonazepam at bedtime for depression. Since upping the prozac from the original 20 I find that i feel quite nausious in the mornings often with the need to pass loose motions 3 or 4 times. It does fade a bit during the day but I'm not sure what may be causing this. Any ideas?
Avatar f tn My husband has been taking ativan for stress for close to 3 years now. At first it really helped. And he was able to sleep at night, too. After all this time, he has become immune to it. Our lives have been a nightmare over these 3 years and we don't see any light at the end of this tunnel yet.
Avatar m tn I know that this question gets asked alot but I am about to swap meds again this time onto lithium. I understand that the first few months are quite difficult and was just wondering if i could hear a few of your experiences and is it as bad as i have heard?. Also would i find it difficult to work during this period?
Avatar f tn Like you i am on Wellbutrin 150 mg amd 20mg of Prozac i do well on both have been for 2 yrs now. The prozac makes me tired i tried no prozac and 1 wellbutrin in the morning and 1 in the afternoon. I had more energy but i was snapping at everyone and being hateful so went back on the prozac my Dr. said the prozac dosnt make you tired but my body says the different.
Avatar f tn I currently take Prozac, Lithium (ER), and Vyvanse each 1x a day. I also get an injection of Depo-Provera once every 3 months. I also have an Rx for Xanex, which is to be taken as needed, but I have not taken it in months. I also often self-medicate with caffine pills - I took two 200mg caffine pills yesterday around 5pm. I also took some Aleve at that time, as I have been having eye pain and headaches for the last two weeks and I was hoping to aleviate that pain.
Avatar f tn once i went up to 200mg i felt very very spacey so i am back down to 150. about 5 weeks ago she took me off my prozac and on lithium. I started at 300mg then moved up to 600mg..at that dose i was getting very severe nausia. then last week on tues i started to cry and could not stop..you know the kind of cry where you just feel so hopeless and sad. this went on until xmas eve with feelings of paranoia and like noone liked me or wanted to be around me..

337492 tn?1212458836 Yeah--zombie woman is not good. Prozac made me nuts too. Because of Prozac, my husband hates the idea of me taking anything. I hope the wellbutrin does well for you. If it doesn't, try Lexapro. I did have some bad feelings at the beginning about dying--but nothing like Prozac--I just hung in there and it kicked in.
Avatar n tn Hi I used to be on lithium, but it wasn't right for me. The combination of the lithium and prozac just wasn't a great mix for me. I did experience a little weight gain, but it was due to fluid retention. Lithium is a salt based drug. My advice would be not to use extra salt in your diet while you're on lithium, and try to drink water, herbal teas, or at a pinch black coffee rather thank milky or sugary drinks that will encourage weight gain.
337492 tn?1212458836 I spent the weekend with my folks and my mother and I got into a discussion about natural suppliments to help depression or BP. She has depression and supplements her Prozac with Vitamin D, especially during winter because of lack of sunlight. I started with Vit. D myself this weekend. Anyhow, I then got to thinking, where is the largest concentration of people with Bipolar disorder?
Avatar f tn my dr is gpoing to up my prozac from 20 mg to 40 mg (I have been on prozac since march 3 and also xanax...before that i had been on ativan since may 09,,and in jan a dr tried me on lithium depakote and zyprexa all during the month of jan....the last one i was on was zyprexa and stopped it march 2 after only being on it about 2 weeks....
1293059 tn?1272290651 Well, I am on Lithium and I like it. I take 1200 mg and I think it is starting to work for me, although slowly. I do see some improvements. The only side effect I seem to have his thirstiness. I am always drinking water. But that's good since the dangerous side effect is kidney damage, so water is important. Also I have some minor hand tremors but nothing bad. One thing I like about lithium is it is an old drug. It has been used for bipolar since the 1960s.
Avatar f tn I would be more concerned about the expiration date on your medications. Please check the date and don't take any expired meds. Yes you are prone to serotonin syndrome as both are serotonergic. You should reduce both your fluoxetine and buspirone dosage to play it safe but don't break any capsules (I think Prozac is in capsules and you should never open a capsule). I think the Buspar is in tablets so its okay to break in half.
Avatar n tn Sounds to me like you are choosing meds for the wrong reasons. You wanted to try Pristiq because you saw it being Rx'ed a lot where you work? I'm SURE you can understand how that would not be a good reason. If you were taking an AD for anxiety (the Prozac), Pristiq would have actually not been the best choicem as it can be quite activating. I'm sure you're not having a psychotic break...sounds more like it is affecting your memory and increasing anxiety.
944643 tn?1418214422 Do they just simply prescribe an anti-depressant for Bipolar? I heard Lithium was bad to take. Is this true? And is a stimulant ok to take if ur Bipolar? If it turns out that I am in fact Bipolar, I'm not gonna know what to think. I'm going to be relieved, but almost embarrassed at the same time. Please don't take offense to this statement.
382594 tn?1266610613 The detox where I'm from uses lithium for every person coming off of alcohol. The combo of lithium and ativan is supposed to help prevent seizures and shakes. You probably already know this but, it may be safer for your bf to go to an inpatient detox.
Avatar n tn Said that it is not as addicting and will help me through the paxil withdrawl. ??? He said give it a month and then stop taking prozac and getting off prozac is much easier because it stays in your system longer. I am soo sick of taking pills. I went there for help and I left with more pills. Whatever..
Avatar f tn Does anyone have any ideas on what meds I can try other than Depakote, Cymbalta, and Geodon? What experience have people had with prozac? I'm thinking that a change in antidepressant is what I need. I will be switching to another psychiatrist soon, because my current one is leaving his practice. Hopefully I will get a new start on some new meds that can help me.
Avatar n tn I am diagnosed with bipolar disorder. i take lithium ER 450mg BID, Mirapex 1mg for RLS, and zoloft 100mg to treat depression. I can usually fall asleep, however i wake and stay up for a few hours every night. i have tried benedryl, klonopin, trazadone, serequil, and elavil for relief however every one of these meds has a paradoxical effect on me.
