Prozac and hot flashes

Common Questions and Answers about Prozac and hot flashes

prozac

Avatar f tn I have been having terrible hot flashes and I don't want to go on hormone therapy so my Dr prescribed Prozac and that didn't help. We tried Effexor which I have been taking for 6 weeks and it helps tremendously but it is ruining my sex life. I took Wellbutrin years ago and it didn't affect my sex life so I'm wondering if this could be a help with my hot flashes.
Avatar f tn ssris can cause flushing and the sweats, not the same as hormonally induced hot flashes. You're a bit young for hot flashes, and anti-depressants don't treat hot flashes. Some docs prescribe them for some of the mental stuff that accompanies hormonal imbalances, though personally I think that's a bad way to go about it -- better to attack the problem than cover it up with a med that alters the brain, but that's me.
Avatar f tn I have been taking Prozac for many years, recently my Dr added wellbutrin xl. It worked very well except it gave me horrible hot flashes. Is there a good alternative that doesn't have the side effects?
Avatar m tn 38 and then I had 5 more flashes before I finally got out of bed and started my day with more flashes. My gen practioner has suggested prozac ... sorry but that seems a bit severe. Any suggestions? I truly need to get some sleep!
378102 tn?1215571666 My hot flashes began about halfway through my original chemo, and have not changed a whole lot since. After my surgery, my gyn/onc put me on premarin for awhile but I did not really see where it did a whole lot. I have heard that many of those herbs are supposed to help, but remember before you start taking anything, clear it with your Dr first.
Avatar f tn Nobody really knows long-term effects there are (if any) with antidepressants. However, Prozac is the oldest SSRI out there, and people have been on it 20+ years, with no serious long-term effects reported yet. In generally, the SSRI antidepressants appear to be very safe. Though their long-term effects have not been adequately studied. Being on Prozac for 2-3 years should have no lasting detrimental effects. I was on Prozac for 3 years, and I'm now on Lexapro for 2 years.
429647 tn?1249753429 with Onc we talked about going on some estrogen to help with hot flashes and edginess. He thought it would be okay because of no family history of breast or ovarian cancer. Well two months of HRT and my new Ca-125 is up to 12.5. So what do some of you think. I just got the results from the nurse, not sure what to do next, except to go off evomist.
Avatar n tn About 2 months a go my gyneocologist put me on Effexor and told me to stop prozac for hot flashes. I was on the Effexor for about 5 weeks and had an allergic reation to it.. rash and all the worst side effects you could have. I tapered off that which has been horrible. I am now left with a bad headache and extreme fatique and lack of strength. What can I do to feel better, without having to go back on the meds.
Avatar n tn While on Effexor I had some weight gain after my pcp upped the dose to help with hot flashes. I titrated myself back down and was having slow but moderate weight gain. (10-15 lbs over 5 years). Six months ago I switched to Paxil for insurance reasons. I have since gained anoth 15 to 20 lbs. I am not sure if this is due to meds or menapause. I am on phasing myself off of the paxil and trying to go without because the weight gain is causing more depression than the depression was causing!
Avatar f tn when I am experiencing these hot flashes, then within 3-4 mins, I am so cold that I jump in bed, with heating blanket cranked on high, and I shiver and shake for mins. after. Someone help me, please. I am 51 and have been experiencing this for over a year. I become so red, that I look like a beet from my waist on up. My face is ruined by broken capilaries, and now my face is constantly red. In the mornings when I wake, it looks like a monster was in bed with me.
746058 tn?1248344665 s perscribe it after hysterectomies for help with hot flashes and mood swings due to hormone changes, but also saw that some cardio Dr.s prescribe it also to help with POTS. Does anyone here have any experience with it?
Avatar f tn My doctor put me on Venlafaxine five years ago for hot flashes. I started out at 37.5mg daily and as the hot flashes worsened, the dose was increased. Twelve months ago, I decided I wasn't going to continue chasing the hot flashes with medicine and started weaning off. I decreased from 150mg to 75mg per day with side effects that lasted three weeks. After two months, I decreased to 37.5 mg per day. After two months of that dose, I stopped the drug.
Avatar f tn says it works great on reducing hot flashes. If this is so maybe I will cut back on HRT for hot flashes. Thanks!
Avatar f tn Pregnancy night sweats are similar to hot flashes, although they take place during the night as a woman sleeps as opposed to hot flashes that occur during the day. Night sweats during pregnancy, which is also known as "nocturnal hyperhydrosis" during pregnancy occur because the body´s temperature gauge begins to malfunction as a result of hormonal imbalance that occurs during pregnancy.
Avatar f tn I had hysterectomy in my 30s in mid 40s was having hot flashes and md put me on estrogen AND started treating Hashimoto. I developed numerous breast lumps went to MDA and found only cyst caused by the estrogen. The MD there said my hot flashes were not menopause they were from the thyroid.
Avatar f tn She had to have a totally historictimy(sp) at 24-26 because she had cancer, and that through her in to early menopause and so she dealt with the hot flashes for years (she is 51 now) and she finally went to the doctor and it was her body being so out of wack so the doctor put her on some hormones to help balance her out. You might also go to your local herbs store to see if they have anything that might help you out natural but always consult with your doctor.
Avatar f tn I had a pacemaker put in about 2 months ago after ungoing 2 ablation procedures for WPW. I have been experience hot flashes during the night and also a few during the day ever since. I am wondering if this could possibly be a side effect of the pacemaker or would it be happening anyway due to my age (52) and menopause.

1026267 tn?1257591273 I think it has something to do with the thyroid thing. I was experiencing the same thing. I had a TT 3 years ago and started having hot flashes off and on. Yes, I'm 43 so you'd think it could be menopause but I went to my gyno and had tests and it's not. They come and go with me. I'll have them all day long for 2 weeks straight and then not all for months. I'm on 125 mcg of synthroid 3 days a week and 137 for 4. I also take 5 mcg of Cytomel everyday.
Avatar n tn The night sweats stopped almost immediately, and the hot flashes became fewer and less severe. Sometimes I feel a little flushed, like one is coming on, but then it just seems to fizzle. The pain in my legs and breasts has also subsided, and I’m feeling great. The best part is that I’m actually able to get a good night’s sleep again!
Avatar f tn You asked about hot flashes and B6 toxicity. All I can tell you is I started having hot flashes and B6 symptoms the very same month I went into menopause. It was like my body chemistry changed and I could no longer metabolize the B6. My hot flashes have subsided now with the help of taking herbs prescribed by a dr of oriental medicine and accupuncture. Like you I tried conventional methods to reduce my hot flashed but nothing helped until I found a licensed dr of oriental medicine.
7892775 tn?1395673991 I've been experiencing hot flashes almost 2 weeks now. They keep coming and going day and night. It doesn't matter if I'm sitting in AC I still get them and it's notjust ffeeling hot but it's also sweating. Has anyone else experienced this?
9704378 tn?1553726192 If you have any other symptoms, get checked for any virus or other sickness, but just hot flashes is usually normal. I have them, mostly at night, and our bedroom is in the basement where it's nice and freezing. Just stay hydrated and hopefully they let up. They should go away post pregnancy. Good luck!
