Common Questions and Answers about Protonix gerd

protonix

Avatar f tn The best medicines I have been prescribed are Nexium and Protonix. Protonix has a generic available so is inexpensive and works perfectly for me. Studies have shown Nexium to be consistently the most effective but it is more expensive and not always covered by every health insurance plan. United Healthcare for example does not cover Nexium.
Avatar f tn I take Protonix to control my gerd. An allergist recommended this and it does seem to make a difference. Does anyone else take these types of meds to control their gerd and, ultimately, help with asthma? I cannot get Protonix any longer through my health insurance and was wondering if someone took something else as effective. Prilosec and Nexium do not have as good as effect as Protonix for me. Thanks.
Avatar m tn What are other strong treatment for GERD aside from taking esomeprazole and domperidone? Because I have been taken it for almost a year now and I tried to change my diet but still it come and goes.
Avatar n tn Since I have been taking Protonix for GERD, my heart seems to be pounding in my throat. This has never happened to me before and is alarming. My blood pressure has always been low. Is this normal? Is there anything else I can take beside Protonix?

Avatar f tn I have acid reflux and take protonix occassionally when needed...recently I had a bad scare where I suddenly starting gasping for air...I have had similar attacks in the past, but this one was major as I felt like I would stop gasping....There was no warning before the attack....It did subside...Is this common with acid reflux and what do I do when this happens? I did over indulge with food over the holidays...I am not over weight and I do exercise..
Avatar f tn LM is right, protonix is used to treat GERD, which is often present with thyroid issues. What thyroid problem do you have? Are you on thyroid med? If so, what med, what dose(s)? Can you post your latest thyroid blood test results, along with the reference ranges (these ranges vary from lab to lab, so must come from your own report)?
1274110 tn?1270788561 These include Lipitor, Coreg, Lasix, Plavix, 81 mg aspirin, Protonix. I still take Imdur as well. I have had no increase in GERD or heartburn. Given the large cocktail of drugs, have you given thought to requesting your pharmacy to key out the possible drug interactions? I found Ranexa really helps control my angina. As I understand it, Helps stunned, or oxygen-starved areas of the heart by working with beta blockers.
Avatar m tn I have had GERD for years. I went from Aciphex to Protonix and now Nexium. I have recently had a B-12 count toward the low level (but still in normal range) and am concerned that this is because of the medication. I also heard that the medication can cause stomach cancer. Is using the medication for so long safe? Is there a timframe for which it should be stopped? Also, I recently heard about Kapidex.
1580703 tn?1651904887 I was on nexium for GERD but protonix gave better instant relief to my nausea/acid
Avatar f tn I had been on GERD meds for a long time, protonix, prevacid, zantac etc. I did not realize this could cause malabsorption of vitamins and am chronically deficient in iron, vitamin d, magnesium etc and was put on prescription vitamins. I stopped taking the acid reflux meds for a few months and now am waking up a lot at night (in addition to my sleep apnea), have gunk in my throat and feel stuff coming back up again.
Avatar f tn The ENT said GERD. I have been on protonix My GI says it is not GERD. ad endoscopyseveral months afo and was negative for GERD. The pulmonologist said it was laringer spasms and a viral infection in vocal cords. Hospitalized for 3 weeks. Home on 20 days of oral steroids, flovent and nebulizer treatments. I am not feeling better. The coughng and the raspy, hoarse voice is still there and the gasping for air and choking continues but has gotten a little better.
Avatar n tn The pain had started moving to the same location on the left sternal border and sometimes substernally. He now suspected GERD. He started me on 80mg of Protonix for 2 weeks, and then a follow up. On the follow up my chest pains had reduced dramatically in both duration and severity, but they were still present. He took this as all he needed to diagnose me with GERD and give me a prescription for Protonix for another 6 weeks, 40mg.
Avatar f tn About a year ago I was experiencing heartburn, I was diagnose with H.pylori, I was given antibiotics, protonix, I was given protonix for 3 months only, as soon as I stopped taking the protonix, heartburn return. I had an egd done which was negative for H.pylori, now I am experiencing nausea after I eat, maybe 3 times a week, when I experience nausea it usually ruins the rest of my day, I am not taking anything for nausea.
Avatar f tn Hello I already suffered with GERD. Was recently diagnosed with h phylori and treated. Now my stomach is inflamed and burning real bad. Protonix and antacids isn't helping. The burning wakes me up in the morning. What can I take to eliminate this burning.
2121656 tn?1395674749 have you ever tried drinking some dill pickle juice or olive juice when you have the GERD? I know it sounds silly, but quite often GERD is caused by not enough acid, rather than too much... Now that my thyroid levels are adequate, I rarely have acid reflux anymore, so no longer take prescription med, but I often find that a couple tablespoons of dill pickle juice, olive juice or vinegar/water/honey does as much good as the prescription med did..
Avatar n tn I am a longtime user of Protonix for GERD, about 11 years. For the last few months I have had increasing problems with deep muscle spasms in my upper legs, spasms in my hands and fingers, feet and toes and esophagus. New Protonix info indicated long time users may develop magnesium defiencey leading to cramping in the extremities. 250 mg magnesium a day and now two times a day seems to alleviate the problems. I would like to switch prescriptions.
Avatar n tn The pain seemed to stop by the time I left the hospital the next day and they gave me 30 Protonix. The endoscopy a few days ago did not yield any real results, only finding minor irritation that they suggested could be the beginning of Acid Reflux, but I'm not sure because I do not have many of the symptoms (no nausea, difficulty swallowing, or chest burning sensation) and they could not tell me that Acid Reflux was definitely the cause. I do not smoke cigarettes.
Avatar f tn I have been taking Protonix for 5 yrs. Originally had Bowel obstruction surgery 7 yrs. agao. Bad doctor from emergency room referral, no antibiotics before during or after. Contracted acute sepsis, jaundice then ARDS. On ventelator in coma for several weeks. Upon awakening had hole in my stomach size of a football. Several failed mesh surgeries, finally flapped and repaired by reputable nationally known surgeon. Still have adhesions requiring decompression sometim es, etc.
Avatar n tn I have read about the silent reflux, Gerd, etc., I am going back to my dr. in a few weeks after making sure the protonix is not going to work. I was researching nexium tonight and ran across a site at the bottom of the ad that said, "WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GERD AND EOSINOPHILIC ESOPHAGITIS?" After reading the article it sounds exactly like what I have! Is this something that doctors know about? It sounds like it is fairly new.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with reflux after an EGD last summer. I was sailing along, taking protonix 1x per day, eating pretty much normally, and then boom , it was as if a switch were thrown, and the symptoms returned once again. I am now on Zegerid at night (taken for 3 days) and have seen little improvement, and Protonix in the AM. My question is, has anyone experienced this where the drug just stopped working for you? Thanks everyone.
Avatar m tn ve been having severe stomach pain and now my GI doctor thinks it is from the Protonix, which it probably is. His solution is to take me off of the protonix completely. He told me to go cold turkey off of it, but I am having such bad heartburn that I think I'm going to taper it. Shouldn't it be tapered anyways since going off of that much PPI would cause your stomach to over produce acid? Anyone have any ideas?
Avatar f tn I was on PPI for 18 years for GERD and encouraged by my doctor to keep taking it for life. I am now suffering from Gastrinoma cancer metastatic to my liver. If you get pain or diarrhoea after stopping it then check your gastrin blood level. High gastrin level is sign of cancer.

Avatar m tn About 2 months ago I finally had an endoscopy done and was told I had a hietal hernia and a mild case of gerd with esophagitis. How can you have a mild case of GERD if you have it all the time, how is that possible? I dont feel like its a mild case since i have it everyday despite the medication I am on now. Does any one have the same symptoms, I spend every day worrying that im never going to be the same ever again.
