Protonix and b12 deficiency

Common Questions and Answers about Protonix and b12 deficiency

protonix

Avatar m tn Jaybay, thanks for the added info, I found similar information. What that article may not have said is PPI can also interfere with the absorption of B12. That's very important, especially for ppl that are already have absorption issues. Justme... how wonderful that your pain is all but gone!! I am so happy for you!! So happy!! Additionally many PPI interfere with the absorption of B12. I am B12 deficient. I have Malabsorption Syndrome.
Avatar f tn I did some more research and found that protonix can cause a vitamin B-12 deficiency and anxiety. I called my doctor and they wrote me off right away saying the drug should be out of my system and maybe I suddenly developed anxiety (never had any issue with anxiety in my entire life) and that I should see a doctor. I started trying to fix it on my own - I was miserable.
Avatar m tn I also have low B12 but test was neg. Low B12 runs in my family and many of us get shots every month. I have been doing that and my levels stay around 400 or so. I am on a PPI ( protonix) and that causes you to absorb less B12 so I really need the shots. Are you on a PPI such as nexium, protonix etc?
1932415 tn?1325918449 Out of these deficiency states vitamin B12 and magnesium are suspect. Vitamin B12 is needed to maintain the myelin sheath to protect the nerves and magnesium is needed for proper nerve transmission. Based on your symptoms, i would lean towards magnesium deficiency (stress is also a major cause of magnesium deficiency).
Avatar m tn Hello~Yes, having a B12 deficiency can cause a lot of the symptoms you mentioned. I have had B12 shots, and the results were amazing, I felt full of energy, and my depression lifted as well. B12 is a very important vitamin, but, I would like to add that it should be taken in conjunction wit Folic acid and the other B vitamins, they all work synergistically, and it is best to have the entire "team" working together.
Avatar f tn I am 32 years old and I have been diagnosed with B12 deficiency and neuropathy. I have been taking B12 shots for 7 months and my symptons are not getting any better. I am having pain in my legs and I have difficulty walking - my legs feel really heavy and weak. The initial onset was 5 years ago. I have had every test that you can think of and they have all been clear, including MRI and spinal tap. I seem to go into remission and then it comes back, this time even worse.
Avatar n tn My symptoms are constant and progressive and I am so concerned that it is MS and not so much b12 issues- any insight? Three days post injection is it normal NOT to have physical improvement (my head does feel better.) Thanks.
Avatar m tn I am using Nexium for a while, and I know it is associated with B12 deficiency. But also I am taking One a day daily which has 18mcg and that is 300% B12 of the recommended daily value. Do you think I am ruling out this B12 deficiency with this combination?
Avatar f tn I know that I'm B12 deficient. I've been taking supplements for 1-2 months. I recently started having a "medicine" body odor. Is that a symptom of b12 deficiency? Do symptoms get worse before they get better?
Avatar m tn Thanks for your comments, folks. I do feel a bit less cold and stiff in the last couple of days, so maybe it was just the freezing weather as much as the low b12. :) I should also mention that the doctor said it might be worth taking a daily b12 vitamin, which I've been doing, and also eat a steak once a week. But I remain distressed that the doctor told me it will take six months of monthly shots before there is improvement, and then postpones one of those shots for a month.
1479013 tn?1330699762 I am going to watch your discussion as I am interested in what the responses are as I am also starting to worry--especially since I saw that insomnia and anxiety are possible side-effects of Protonix (this was not on this sight--so not sure if true). I also something about Protonix causing B-12 deficiency and am wondering about that, as well.
Avatar f tn Does anyone know what causes severe B12 deficiency and vitamin d deficiency? I am starting 50,000 IU tomorrow (twice a week) and I will start the B 12 shots (twice a week) for probably the rest of my life. I have been really sick and have some other symptoms that I have had a lot of trouble addressing. i have an unexplained fever and Blood Pressure that goes really high(180/120) and then drops really low (90/50).
2026744 tn?1527706727 Experts who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of B12 deficiency, like Sally Pacholok R.N. and Jeffery Stewart D.O., suggest treating all patients that are symptomatic and have B12 levels less than 450 pg/mL. They also recommend treating patients with normal B12, but elevated urinary methylmalonic acid (MMA), homocysteine and/or holotranscobalamin (other markers of B12 deficiency).
Avatar f tn The best treatment for a B12 deficiency is injections and regular monitoring of the B12 via blood work. If you do not absorb it as you stated, suggest getting blood work to see where your level B12 and other vitamins are at and then get treated. Thank you for your question.
Avatar n tn I wanted to add I've had 2 scopes, ct scan, blood work to rule out celiac disease and B12 issues, ultra sound. They cant find nothing other than hernia. However my Gastro DR says no way my hernia is causing this issue. Im on Pepcid, Carafate, GI cocktail, and protonix.
334876 tn?1229979296 I would really like to know about this as I have been reading a lot about B12 deficiency and MS that the B12 and Ms dose seen to take a lot of B12 to heal the nerve sheeting damage from MS as I have been taking this B12 by shots and I still see no change from it and my headaches as well as other things are coming back again.
Avatar f tn I just recently read that if you have b12 deficiency you may have trouble becoming pregnant or supporting a healthy baby through the pregnancy. there have been multiple times i should have gotten pregnant but i didn't and i thought i was infertile. I think i have the B12 deficiency because just recently i started taking a B-complex vitamin. i took it every day at the same time for a week and now my period is about a week late.
Avatar f tn For this reason, Japan has risen the lowest level of B12 to 550pg/mL. Nexium causes vitamin B12 deficiency (and plenty of other deficiency states) as it lowers stomach acid essential to release instrinsic factor needed to bind to vitamin B12 for absorption in the gut. A more accurate test for vitamin B12 deficiency is a urinary methylmalonic acid test. (UMMA). Methylmalonic acid rises just 10 days after a vitamin B12 deficiency starts.
Avatar f tn I too have a low B12 (192) and the doc told me to take 1000 mcg of B12 via a note on my lab report (which I viewed online).Doc never called. She didn't say how often or what form (pill or sublingual). I am taking a sublingual tablet under my tongue (1000 B12 mcg and 400 mcg Folid Acid). I was on Prilosec for 9 months (I have been off for 7 days) and I am not planning on taking Prilosec again.
