Avatar f tn Hello Dear, Most people with essential tremor don't need treatment beyond reassurance that the condition isn't a sign of a more serious disease. Lifestyle changes — which include getting plenty of rest and avoiding stressful situations and stimulants such as caffeine — may help ease the tremors. Most people with essential tremor find that fatigue, anxiety, sleep deprivation and even temperature extremes make their tremors worse.
Avatar f tn When essential tremor (ET) significantly interferes with daily activities, long-term drug treatment is needed. Drugs most commonly used to treat essential tremor include beta-blockers (propranolol) and an epilepsy drug called Mysoline (primidone). Topamax (topiramate), another drug used to treat epilepsy and migraine help some people.
Avatar n tn Saw on WEB MD it's likely not Parkinson's... this is from their site: "Essential tremor differs from the tremor caused by Parkinson's disease in the following ways: Essential tremor may affect the head and voice. Head tremor is uncommon in early Parkinson's disease. Essential tremor is almost always worse when the affected part of the body is in motion than when it is at rest.
Avatar m tn ) in my calves, along with benign familial tremor. I tried propanolal for several years, which decreased the severity of both problems. Unfortunately, the respitory side-effects from the medicine forced me to discontinue it. Any suggestions on different medications that I might try? Also any thoughts on someone somewhere specializing in myokymia? Thank you.
Avatar n tn Hello and hope you are doing well. It could be 'intentional tremor'. We usually encounter intention tremor in certain neurological diseases affecting the cerebellum or its connections with the brainstem and spinal cord; A neurologist can help out the possibility of cerebellar diseases. Once such a condition had been ruled out, the possibility of the tremor being a benign 'essential' one is to be considered.
Avatar f tn Hi, abnormal involuntary movements (AIMs) are also known as 'dyskinesias'. Tremor, chorea, dystonia and myoclonus are examples of types of dyskinesia which have different mechanisms and modalities of treatment. Your symptoms could be due to 'intentional tremor’. Avatar n tn I am a 38 year old who has been developing a tremor in my dominant hand for the past 18 months. I also have been taking imipramine for the last 18 years for a panic disorder. I tried reducing my imipramine dosage about the time the tremor began but then went back up to my original dose. The tremor continued and seems to be getting worse. Ive read that imipramine can cause tremors but find it hard to believe it would start after all these years.

Avatar n tn This sounds like essential tremor, which a neurological disorder is causing involuntary shaking of particular body parts, head and hands. These tremors worsen when hands are used rather than when resting. It may affect the voice making it quivering. Usually the cause is unknown, without a known cure. It is different from parkinson’s disease. parkinson’s involves involuntary tremors at rest, muscle stiffness, slowness of movement and is caused by deficiency of dopamine in brain.
Avatar f tn Recently, my doctor diagnosed me with essential tremor. It's very common in my family on my father's side, almost 50% of that side of the family has it. My grandma has it so bad that she can barely hold things or write anymore, and my dad is getting to that point, as well. I don't know how bad you can consider mine. I also suffer from mild anxiety, and so when I shake sometimes I get a little panicky (if that's even a word).
Avatar n tn Hi there. Essential tremor is a type of involuntary shaking movement where no cause can be identified. The specific cause is unknown and could be due to cerebellum getting affected. This can also occur with dystonias, Parkinsonism, etc. certain symptoms could be head nodding, shaking of sound if tremor affects the voice box. Usually these are seen when you move and may worsen with stress, caffeine, drugs. You need to consult a neurologist for assessment.
1710414 tn?1308172199 Some are inherited, some due to excessive alcohol, or alcohol withdrawal, which can kill nerve cells, overactive thyroid, and certain drugs. Essential tremor, dystonic tremor is also possible. Usually there is no cure. Treatment may include propranolol or other beta-blockers and primidone, dystonic tremor may respond to drugs like clonazepam, anticholinergics, etc.
Avatar m tn I've been taking 20mg of propranolol twice a day for about 2 weeks now and haven't noticed any improvement in my tremors. Does it have to build up in your system or should it start working instantly after the first time you take it, or maybe I'm on a low dose?
1251333 tn?1445218215 m newly on the propranolol, 40mg twice a day. My tremors diminish for about 3 good hours then start back up again. I'd like to know if anything similar happens to anyone on the medication.
Avatar f tn i have cervical dystonia and was diganosed at one time with essential tremor, but my is painful and essential tremor is not. i have been on thyroid medication for 10 years now due to having thyroid removed many years ago due to thyroid cancer. i can tell you that is doesnt make you have tremors. try to find a muscle disorder doctor that can give you motor skill tests and they can determine on what you have. i havent heard of essential tremors being related to dementia.
Avatar n tn t aggravate tremors and so your feeling of increased head shaking cannot be attributed to Inderal. For a person with an essential tremor, the starting dose of Inderal is 40 mg twice a day. Based on the tremor response and/or Inderal side effects, your healthcare provider may increase or decrease the Inderal dosage. Hence, the dose you are taking is suboptimum and may not be of any benefit in your tremor.
Avatar f tn i also have essential tremor that started in my hands but us now my whole body my legs are weak and shakybut when i rest they subside
Avatar n tn It is far worse when in a social situation or when doing a task like cutting veggies or writing, not all the time, but sometimes. The typical treatment for this is propranolol (a beta blocker) and if there is anxiety along with it, then clonazepam too. The propranolol will help with the shakes and also anxiety, but if the anxiety is more pronounced and/or with panic attacks then my guess would be that the doctor would prescribe clonazepam with it.
Avatar f tn I have had an essential tremor since the age of 20 i am now 37years old, it affects my whole body, head hands legs as well as an unsteady gait. I have seen numerous nurologists and have been on several meds i have even gone as far as trying botox injections in my head and neck, they have gotten so bad that they are starting to affect my daily activites not only at work but at home, I am a mother of 2 children a 6yr old and a 4 yr old.
Avatar f tn Could it be just essential tremors? Or is it more serious? Any info would be great. Thanks for your time in reading this.
Avatar f tn have been told multiple answers-anxiety, essential tremor, somatoform. I feel both my wrists w/slight tremor when they’re under my pillow when going to sleep or when arms folded. Top Neuro/MDS said this isn’t disease, don’t have PD/MS, specific positions like under my pillow can be ET-not rest tremor-says most everything to go away-states symptoms are from herniated discs C5/C6, C6/C7-bulging,stenosis-time should heal.Am I being told this so we can wait to actual PD symptoms present?
Avatar m tn From what it looks like, I think the doctor does reply on this forum. I'm not completely sure, though. You're welcome! :) I saw your anxiety seem to be building and figured I have ET, I can probably help out. Hope your anxiety is subsiding. My meds for ET or the benzodiazepines?
Avatar n tn My neurologist has diagnosed me with Essential Tremor and Cervical Spondylosis (with some osteophytes). When I turn my head to the right it tremors quite noticeably. When my head faces to the front the tremors are not as noticeable. This began about 2 months ago and I am a 49 year old female. Does one have anything to do with the other? Will the tremor get worse? He suggested Botox in the back of the neck to stop the tremors.
Avatar f tn These tremors are contant when doing fine motor skills - Essential Tremor--I have had them since the age of 4. My Dr. was at Childrens Memorial in Chicago but he has retired.
