Avatar f tn I AM AWAITING A REPLACEMENT FOR MY FAULTY KEYBOARD WHICH WILL ONLY PRODUCE UPPER CASE LETTERS. MY APOLOGIES FOR WHAT APPEARS TO BE POOR NETIQUETTE. I MAY BE OLD, ENGLISH AND LONG RETIRED AS A DENTAL SURGEON (B.D.S. FROM ONE OF THE TOP UK MEDICAL UNIVERSITIES) BUT I CAN SEE NO LOGICAL REASON WHY A SIMPLE SINGLE LARGE DOSE OF PROPHYLACTIC ANTIBIOTIC (USUALLY AMOXICILLIN FAMILY) IF THE PATIENT CANNOT GIVE A FULL PREVIOUS MEDICAL HISTORY.
Avatar n tn We found that our daughter did become resistant to prophylactic antibiotics but we got over that by alternating two different antibiotics on a monthly basis until her operation. I'm not sure what current thinking is about prophylactic antibiotics-whether they help reduce infections or not, but it is worth finding out about. Because my daughters condition wasn't likely to improve with age we decided to go with the re-implantation and I don't regret it for a minute.
606078 tn?1247264553 I was wondering about maybe having a joint replacement section here at medhelp. This site has been a Godsend for me and to have a place to talk and vent not only about the Fibro and chronic pain, but to have a joint replacement discussion would be wonderful. Just a thought....
Avatar m tn the odds that you contracted anything from receiving oral sex are very low. in general we don't recommend any testing and we certainly don't recommend prophylactic antibiotics. for the future, only have protected sexual contact - protects you and your regular partner, saves you worrying and saves you frequent testing. up to you whether to have sex with your partner before you know the results of any testing you had done.
Avatar m tn 47 y/o male here... thinking of ordering antibiotics online for the purpose of preventing the spread of any bacterial infection I might acquire from receiving oral sex. Cipro (500mg, single dose immediately after the "event") and Zithromax are my first considerations, but I'm having trouble finding "Z" in a single 1g (single dose treatment)... only 500mg 1. Is antibiotic use, as a preventative measure, effective? 2.
1569985 tn?1328247482 s position as of 2007, the idea being that no large scale studies have shown that for most people with valve problems and so on--but no complicated conditions--the risks of the prophylactic antibiotics may be greater than not taking anything beforehand. Your situation is more complicated than some because of the diabetes, but this really is a question for the professionals. I suggest you st spinning your wheels about this.
3780106 tn?1348114717 If it's a knee, a series of injections of a cushioning material can help postpone surgery. I'm not certain if the same is available for hips, but there is something called "planing' for the hip joint that can postpone total hip replacement. Having said that, the newest implants they have for hip joints are far superior to the old style; the newer type removes less bone and allows the patient to engage in more high-impact activities than with the old-style joint.
Avatar f tn I heard from a lady at work that when you get a staph infection in a knee replacement, or any replaced joint, that you will always have staph dorment in it, and an injury or even stress can cause it to flair up again...does anyone know if this is true? I can't seem to get a straight answer from my doctor - I don't know why.
424634 tn?1277857528 Get the antibiotics ASAP. There is much less risk, in my opinion, in taking antibiotics for a couple of weeks than waiting and wondering if you have Lyme disease. If you kept the tick, then I would bring it with me. Don't delay, or you could end up on these message boards like us:( We did not have that luxury - getting antibiotics immediately. Now, we are facing chronic illness and difficult treatment.
Avatar n tn It looks like blood takes longer than this to return to normal -- is it ok from an immune system and otherwise perspective to have an invasive periodontal surgery done, and to take a prophylactic course of amoxicillin? I'm wondering if my lowered white blood count or anything like that might impact my healing or resistance to infection. Is it at all preferable (even marginally) to reschedule for later? Thanks!
Avatar f tn Again, if the doctor is concerned, then there are very practical and successful procedures for heart valve replacement that would be available if the valve defect does not correct itself (again, this is ONLY if the regurgitation is pronounced and causes life altering symptoms/issues). One more time, if the doctor fairly dismissed the murmur, nothing will need to be done.
Avatar f tn Well, the nerve block would do nothing to the primary pathology and would just control pain perception for some amount of time. A joint replacement surgery would be required sooner or later. Though one could continue with pain management and walking with support, it might be a better idea to get the joint replaced to continue with a normal life. Hope this is helpful. Take care!
Avatar f tn 7 months back Ortho Doctor advised for knee replacement(TKR) and admitted to hospital but because of hard swelling in right side of the knee they did a small operation and removed the the hard swelling. It got some infections and because of Diabetes it took long time to heal and Ortho doctors are not giving care for healing the wound. The joint pain got increased and my father is not able walk at all. We went and consult a General Medicine who is specialist in diabetes care.
Avatar n tn 5) Based on my limited symptoms would you recommend a trial course of thyroid replacement? Would this help prevent progression to overt Hypothyroid? My endo has recommended waiting and stated that prophylactic treatment is unsubstantiated by current literature. Might I benefit from getting the TSH below three, as suggested by AACE? Thanks so much for your response!
Avatar m tn Hi, according to the new guidelines, prophylactic antibiotics to prevent endocarditis, prior to dental therapy are no longer recommended for individuals with mitral valve prolapse, rheumatic heart disease and bicuspid valve disease. So, you may not need antibiotics. But, please discuss this with your doctor am sure he will provide further assistance. Regards.

In the course of the study, Schlager tested positive for a BRCA gene mutation, an abnormality known to increase greatly the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer.
Avatar f tn Hi if you are not diagnosed with Rheumatic heart disease or if you tested for ASO titer before I think you don't need to some kind of antibiotic prophylaxis. If you really want to be sure you can do ASO titer (much cheaper) than doing repeat Echo.
Avatar f tn Have you undergone splint therapy recently? This does help unload the joint at least temporarily. It's hard to make much of a recommendation with so little details. However, if you don't feel comfortable with the joint replacement recommendation you should find another qualified TMJ specialist to get another opinion. For the record the Christensen implants are excellent, but the skill of the surgeon is more important. And you would need followup care by you TMJ doc as well.
Avatar f tn 3) What are the recovery times and post op therapy differences between replacement and fusion? With my shoulder replacement, I was in an immobilizer for six weeks following surgery and then several months of PT. I don't have a problem with the post op therapies, was just wondering if with a fusion there is still the long months of PT since the knee doesn't bed so you obviously can't exercise it.
Avatar f tn Thank you for the info, Abhijeet. I suspected as much and will probably go forward with replacement eventually.
Avatar f tn Does anyone have experience with long term antibiotic treatments? How long does typical treatment for chronic UTIs last? I am worried about taking antibiotics for more than a year.
Avatar m tn Dear Doctor, Generally does prophylactic treatment of laser for lattice for high myopia cause any problem in any other area of retina? Or its a safe alternative and generally a person can get weak areas/lattice sealed without any problem arising out of the prophylactic treatment. Thanks.
Avatar f tn Thank you for the information on the knee replacement. I had a shoulder replacement a little over a year ago and I believe I'm in for a revision/second surgery on it very soon. Recently I've been having intense, severe pain and loss of mobility in the shoulder that, in some respects, is worse than before the surgery.
Avatar f tn Back in 1973 & 1974, at age 19, I had both kneecaps removed due to Chondromalacia Patella. I wasn't given replacement parts. Now as a 62 female, I find myself walking with a cane and my left knee is extremely painful. I consulted with 2 orthopedic MDs. The first one wanted to do joint replacement surgery. The second one said I am not a candidate for joint replacement surgery since I don't have kneecaps. He prescribed diclofenac potassium for the pain.
Avatar f tn MD recommending ankle replacement for severe arthritis five years after crushing my tallis and breaking ulna and radius. Any experience...
