Common Questions and Answers about Productive coughing in older dogs

coughing

Avatar n tn Coq10 helps with tissue oxygenation especially in the heart, brain and lungs. It is a great supplement for older dogs! A 30mg capsule would be plenty for your pup. Hopefully you're feeding your dog a high quality diet with extra omega 3's. Do not use any chemical flea and tick agents. These could cause serious toxic issues. Becareful with air fresheners, household cleaning agents and pesticides. They all could play a roll in your dogs condition.
Avatar f tn Because my dog interacts with other dogs a lot, when he developed a "cough" I immediately took him to the vet. He had no fever, is eating and drinking normally and his activity level is normal - he doesn't at all act like a sick dog. I have kept him away from other dogs to avoid getting them sick. The vet diagnosed him with kennel cough and put him on Doxycycline 100 mg - he takes 1 1/2 pills twice a day. He started them on Tuesday. He has also had a Bordetella vaccine.
Avatar n tn Is there any research about pacemakers in older dogs and life expectancy? Would it perhaps be better to keep him comfortable and let him go naturally? Appreciate any advice or thoughts to better formulate a stance on our family dogs last months to years with us.
Avatar m tn Thanks for the ideas, I think I'm going to hold off on crating him for now. I've ordered one of the DAP diffuser's as well as a Kong Wobbler to put some food in. Hopefully between the two of them it will keep him a bit entertained and also lower his anxiety while I'm gone. Thanks again.
Avatar n tn do you have an air purifier?? The older ones would emit "ozone" and that can cause lots of coughing also it can lead to cancer. We had a dog die from basically lung cancer caused by this machine. We found out about the cause when our friends got an air purifier and their dogs all started coughing within a week of them starting to use it, took it out of the house and all the dogs STOPPED coughing. I wish there was a way to get this info out to everybody.
Avatar m tn My son has a bad cough that is productive, but it sounds like he has a hard time coughing things up when he gets sick. It is worse when he lays down during naptime and at night. His teacher at school says it sounds barkier than the other kids. I treat it with robitussin dm and that helps a lot. We recently went to the pediatrician and I described the cough to him as his main symptom when he has a cold, but it is associated with a runny and congested nose.
Avatar f tn NO! Especially at that age. Stay away from the cats and if it were my grandchild? I would get rid of the cat. Dogs can sometimes be worse than cats too. Now that I am older I will take an antihistamine and I'm usually okay if I don't stay too long, but as an adult I know the cues and know when to leave. A four year old is much too young. I remember spending summer weekends at my friends house and being up ALL night long coughing and coughing and coughing. I'm allergic to dogs!
871111 tn?1248992972 Coughing is an unusual manifestation of allergy in dogs, although I have diagnosed one or two dogs with allergic bronchitis based on chest xrays and tracheal wash/cultures to evaluate the type of inflammation and bacteria present in the lungs; you are right, allergies should not get better with antibiotics, her improvement suggests that bacterial infection is a component of the problem, although infection is likely secondary to another underlying cause.
Avatar f tn s rather common in dogs! Dogs can live many ,many years on medications just like humans can.....Meds. to improve function of the heart & also lasix to clear fluid from the lungs......An EKG or ECG can detect what part of the heart is having a problem.....They usually run around $100.....Some Vets will suggest this test, some will not...They will just go ahead and treat... Next- Kennel Cough- This is a virus and antibiotics will do nothing.....
Avatar f tn At the beginning of the month I got the upper respiratory virus that was going around so did the kids. all three of the kids stopped the coughing withing a week (so did the co-workers) I have asthma but I cannot get rid of the productive cough.
1450484 tn?1284904131 I have been on prednisone more than off since the beginning of July due to cough, chest discomfort and dyspnea. The cough is productive with the sputum being thick and white. I had blood flecks in it twice during my hospitalization but none since. My FEV1 is down 11% from when I left the hospital. I am currenty on 40mg of prednisone a day, Dulera (200/5), Qvar (80mcg), Theophylline CR (just starting it again), singulair, albuterol PRN (2-3x a day), mucinex, zyrtec, rhinocorft, and achiphex.
Avatar m tn My 5 year old miniature schnauzer is 5 years old. She has started coughing and is becoming more frequent. It is almost a panting cough? She also has a bad odor. Which has been going on for a month or two.(odor). I have listened to her chest with a stethescope and she is breathing fast and it sounds thick and dry. I thoguht it was maybe just a case of dust because we mulched leaves (oak and pecan) and we didn't have a bag on the mower and it got pretty dusty.
Avatar f tn I sleep through the night, but when I wake up in the morning, I begin coughing and mucus shoots out of my throat like a volcano. The doctor gave me Prednisone twice, and it worked like a charm, but I never got it again because she was afraid of the side effects (and so was I). I've tried many inhalers, but they all took my voice away. I now use Ventolin, but that does very little to help. I'm so afraid that there's something else wrong with me, or soon will be.
203342 tn?1328737207 Our oldest dog, a 12 yr old Akita, has been acting "like a puppy" too. When we moved here two years ago, the fire alarm actually scared the poop out of her. We only moved about two blocks away and she wan't afraid of the old fire alarm which sounds just like this one. Maybe dogs react to different sound frequencies. She is also "big sister" to three young dogs.
Avatar m tn It has been a day and I realized that I actually have phlegma, I have a productive cough even tho I was only able to expectorate very little due to my reluctance to coughing. I don't think the allergy section was the right section to post this to, but I don't know which would have been correct.
Avatar m tn A HUGE percentage of dogs down here are heartworm positive, I have two friends right now whose dogs have it, and both dogs are in excellent condition to look at them, in fact, one is probably 25% overweight for her breed and the other is a male pit bull who looks like a real bruiser. He's fat, strong and very robust, but he has a HORRIBLE infestation because the ignorant person who owns him never bothered to worry about giving him a preventative.
Avatar m tn Recently, I started running at a faster pace for 10ks, and about 30 minutes to an hour after the run (before and during the run I feel fine), I start to have a lot of productive coughing, wheezing, chest and throat soreness that lasts for the next several hours. This doesn't occur after other types of excerises (sprints, intensive jump rope sets, tournament singles tennis, weightlifting, or slower long distance running.
Avatar f tn It is a barking dry cough, a bit like croup and is not productive. He is only three and is a fit cat usually. The only change recently is that we have started him on dried food because we were told it was better for him, he has enough water. If anyone could suggest anything I would be grateful...
Avatar f tn When I try and take my dog (Dex) for a walk, within a few minutes he begins making a coughing noise. The first few gags/coughs are usually not 'productive', but then he will start spitting/coughing up clear spit more often than not. Generally this is the worst at the beginning of the walk, and generally settles down about 20 minutes in.
Avatar f tn There is also idiopathic seizures, but these are usually seen in younger dogs.
Avatar f tn So my puppy had parvo about three to four weeks ago, he stayed with them for about four days to get treated. He came home & was back to his joyful playfull self. About a week & a half later he developed kennel cough passing it on to our other three dogs. The vet gave us oral antibiotics to give to the dogs for the coughing, they all never stopped eating & are all playfull and happy as tgey usually are except my puppy.
Avatar n tn Reasons for Coughing: OK, For starters, you need to rule out Heart Problems....The xray will not only show the heart, but also the lungs...This is important.... With Heart Disease, the weak heart cannot pump as well...Fluid builds into the lungs causing the cough..The cough is usually MOIST like they're choking on congestion...Actually, they are...The cough is worse in the mornings & during periods of running, playing & excitement....Fluid will show in an x ray of the lungs.....
Avatar n tn 9 yr old daughter has a chronic productive cough. She had pneumonia 3X before age 3, in left low lobe, in Right up lobe and the 3rd time in the L Low and R up. She had up and low resp problems during this time. CF test neg. None of the asthma meds helped. At age 3 1/2 outgrew this. She was well and did not cough for 12 months. At age 4 1/2 she started coughing again. The cough is clear with some white or some light yellow. It looks kind of lacy.
Avatar n tn About two months ago I suddenly developed a cough. Started in cold weather (travelling outside of Florida in cold climate). No other symptoms. Seemed to be only chest tightness, and an almost constant dry cough- rarely productive. I was already taking antihistamine daily for allergies. Went to the doctor after about 30 days. He gave Asmanex, a Medrol 6 day dose pack, Nexium, and upped to an ant-histamine with decongestant (Claritin-D generic equivalent.
Avatar n tn yes seizures in older dogs can occur for many reasons.
