ve seen comments with all kinds of opinions comparing the effectiveness of different forms of Prilosec (generic name omeprazole). But that are usually prescription brand-vs-generic, or OTC (non-prescription) brand-vs-generic. What I am looking for is real-life experiences from people who have moved from PRILOSEC OTC to GENERIC RX OMEPRAZOLE, or vice versa. I've been taking PRILOSEC OTC (non-prescription) for quite awhile, after years on the original prescription brand Prilosec.

Omeprozole is not a narcotic pain killer. It is a heartburn med that isn't much different than over the counter Prilosec. I've never heard of it being administered via I.V. Omeprazole does nothing except preventing heartburn.

I get bad nausea from some of them .. so may be worth trying another brand and see if it goes away. Just my two cents as a patient ... I take Prevacid w/o a problem that is very pricy vs generic for Prilosec. I'd ask your Dr and see what he/she thinks, too ?

AstraZeneca markets omeprazole as Losec, Antra, Gastroloc, Mopral, Omepral, and Prilosec. Omeprazole is marketed as Zegerid by Santarus, Prilosec OTC. The side affects mentioned in the above post can happen after long term use.......the absorption issues can become an issue and u should take ur meds at alternate times to avoid one cancelling out the others...so take ur Gerd meds in the AM and ur supplements at night....

I too have GERD, and I take the same medication as you. I have never had any problem with Prilosec, 20-mg. The OTC Prilosec is 10-mg, and I take two capsules a day if my prescription at the VA is late. I have never noticed my bowel movement smells any worst than it normally does. There is a test you can do to judge whether Prilosec is affecting your bowels. There are about 4 or 5 competitors to Prilosec. Examples are Zantac, Prevacid, 15-mg; Pepcid 20-mg.

Hi, For the past couple of years I have had Acid Reflux and have been on 40mg of Omeprazole ever since. The last year or so breakthrough symptoms have taken place. I rarely if ever get conventional heartburn, but I have a constant burn in the back of my throat. Best guess where the throat waterfalls down in terms of location.

I have been taking Omeprazole (Prilosec) since year 2000. I am concerned about calcium absorption and bone loss and would like to wean from it. Is bone loss a legitimate concern? It is easy to find information regarding drug-drug interactions for omeprazole (Prilosec) and atorvastatin (Lipitor). The omeprazole appears to increase the bioavailability of the statin, increasing the risk of side effects. Does this mean that the interaction is like taking a higher dose of the statin, which would provide benefit for someone like me who only takes a low dose (10mg atorvastatin daily) and has no statin tolerance issues?

my doctor put me on prilosec. Instead of prescription strength prilosec i am taking omeprazole 20 mg over the counter since it is very cheep. but even after almost 5 weeks of medication my gerd symptoms - heart burn, burping, regurgitation - have not subsided any significantly. My doctor asked me be patient and use the drug for 12 to 24 weeks to become symptom-free. My question is that does taking omeprazole otc instead of prescription prilose make any difference in efficacy of the medication.

From what i've read, prilosec (omeprazole) may lower cholesterol levels by inhibiting the amounts of cholesterol producing enzymes. How long should you stop taking this drug? Maybe a few months to see a difference perhaps. When acid blockers were introduced onto the market, it was recommended not be taken for more than 6 weeks. A very good reason for that! Not to mention insufficient stomach acid is by far a more common cause of acid reflux.

Hi i am on 40mg of Omeprazole for acid reflux. Has anyone here had side effects from it like loose stools? For the past two weeks or so my bowel movements have been rather odd...loose in the morning but ok towards the end of the day...no blood, but causing soreness around my anus afterwards....

Saw an endo doc and she told me to not take the Nexium or Omeprazole (Prilosec) due to the possible side effects. Called my doc the other day because I have had stomach pain and feeling of nausea. He tells me to take the Omeprazole!!! Next day, no better so asked the pharmacist if I could take it 3 times a day instead of twice. He told me I was already on twice the dose and should only be taking it once a day (20 mg).

Take some OTC antacid like Mylanta. You can also take zantac(ranitidine)or prilosec (omeprazole).These will help. Also keep your fluid electrolyte balance optimum by drinking lots of fluids. If the symptoms worsen then it may be due to H.Pylori infection. You need antibiotics in that case after prescription from a physician. I hope it helps. Take care and regards.

t allow Nexium to be sold/patented because it was so similar to Prilosec. Prilosec = Omeprazole vs Nexium = Esomeprazole, just go with Omeprazole and pay the generic copay.

I cannot get Protonix any longer through my health insurance and was wondering if someone took something else as effective. Prilosec and Nexium do not have as good as effect as Protonix for me. Thanks.

If you are taking a PPI such as prilosec or the generic omeprazole, peopl ehave reported the high BP as a side effect. I took 40mg omeprazole for 3 weeks and it elevated my BP.

Is it possible to have a reverse reaction to Nexium / omeprazole? It never really made the symptoms of my recently diagnosed hiatal hernia caused reflux (lump in throat, mostly) go away. It seemed to help for 2 weeks, but after 1 month it seemed to aggravate GERD symptoms. I am reading a lot on the subject, experimenting with diet and relaxation and the occasional spoonful of Maalox. I relate to the person who said they felt fine until after the endoscopy.
