Common Questions and Answers about Prilosec and hiatal hernia

prilosec

Avatar m tn m thinking that it might be a hiatal hernia, which is associated with GERD and can cause the chest crowding that I'm feeling. Then again, I suppose it could be something else too. If anyone has any ideas or thoughts, please let me know. I've been seeing my general practitioner, but can't really afford to see specialists because I'm uninsured.
Avatar f tn I have pre-existing GERD problems that are under control.
Avatar m tn I had a bad onset of gastric symptoms in mid dec that is only now getting better. I've hada barium swallow including small bowel and all was normal except a small hiatal hernia. I've been on Prilosec 2 weeks and have modified my diet for acid reflux since that seems to be the consensus. I have not had any serious symptoms for several days now. But they still never foundany root cause other than acid reflux.
Avatar n tn My cardiologist tells me that my heart arrhythmias are triggered by the fact that I have GERD and a large hiatal hernia. My G.P. now wants me to see a surgeon about a procedure to repair the hernia and wrap part of the stomach thus preventing reflux. I have heard conflicting reports about the success of this type of surgery. I am 83 and have none of the classic GERD symptoms, just the arrhythmia.
Avatar f tn Hi Geofrey, I found this info and copy and pasted it as well as the link. From what I get, if the hiatal hernia affects our diaphram it must affect our freathing, but nowhere is it listed as a symptom.I know when I am bloated I have more difficulties in breathing.I also believe this is a possibility. **************************************************************************************************** PATIENT & FAMILY EDUCATION / NYU Medical Center http://pfrc.med.nyu.
Avatar n tn I also am experiencing chest pressure and I was diagnosed with hiatal hernia w/GERD. I am having a pH monitoring test done next week and a repeat endoscopy on May 27. I did have ulcers in my esophagus but not Barrett's from what I was told. They also drew blood today so I am guessing they are checking for H. pylori. I have been taking Protonix 20 mg 2x a day since August. I had my GB removed in Sept. and my symptoms went away but now they are all back again. I wish you lots of luck.
Avatar m tn Did they check your gallbladder, too? I have a hiatal hernia, too, but it didn't bother me until it got big. My chiropractor does a hiatal hernia adjustment that helps. You might check into that.
Avatar m tn For me it's almost constant, I also have acid reflux (Prilosec and alka seltzer have worked great) Also cut out all fast food and foods that are high in carbs. I quit drinking soda completely mainly water and green tea now, I'm also checking into what I believe may be a gallbladder issue.
Avatar m tn Yes, panic attacks, vomiting and hernias seem to go hand in hand. I am 33 now and have been getting panic attacks since I was in primary school. but when you're a child, what do you know? All I knew was that I constantly thoughts I was dying, or terribly ill with some kind of disease. I was only diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder when I had a depressive episode that landed me in hospital and getting in touch with a really good Psychiatrist.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia during my hospital stay with no indications of any bleeding causing the anemia. Could the daily use of Prilosec be my problem?
5025679 tn?1363541501 I have been having this problem off and on since January. The last time it came back I began taking prilosec again. I was taking prilosec for a year last year because my doc and I thought I may have silent reflux. I don't get heart burn but I was getting this one pain that would come in waves and it hurt in my belly-- sometimes radiating to my chest. After he told me to take prilosec, once daily it went away and never came back.
Avatar f tn How long ago was it when you had the endoscopy? What medicines have you tried and what made it worse? Are you having issues with acid reflux? It seemed liked my symptoms got worse while I was taking Prilosec, Prevacid, and especially on Nexium. While on Nexium I was getting chest pain from just drinking water. My doctor thought that I had a hiatal hernia, based on just my symptoms, but the upper endoscopy didn't show one.
Avatar n tn I also have alot of belching and I also have a small hernia. My doctor said to take the Prilosec for 8 weeks. Any advice would be helpful.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed Thursday with a hiatal hernia based on symptoms alone. I get extremely nervous when going to the doctor and I know I should've asked him these questions but failed to. Hoping someone here could offer me some insight. I've been having a dull ache just under my breastbone for quite sometime. My abdomen is also tender to the touch from below my breastbone down to my belly button, as well as on the right side and a little aching in my back.
Avatar f tn I had an endoscopy with a dilation, and diagnosis of hiatal hernia, only 2cm. The spasms never stop, but get worse with the usual triggers: acidic foods, cold drinks. They started getting better with Prilosec and when I get good sleep they feel better. I've lost 80 pounds in the last year, 30 of those I've lost in a month and a half because of not wanting to eat due to pain.
6780206 tn?1386121349 reflux escapes to the throat-- I was referred to a Chiropractor -that found an Hiatal Hernia -he put that back in place-a simple procedure and showed me how to do it-put me on Zypan to increase the acid & Okra pepsin an digestive enzyme---just by putting the hernia back in place helped so muchGoogle it or you tube will explain that. Within 2 hours the throat clearing and cough stopped-that was 3 weeks ago- I'm completely off of Prilosec and all zantac products.
1194973 tn?1385503904 s temporary caused by added pressure on the esophagus and stomach. A hiatal hernia also can cause GERD. As the weight drops it usually improves, but you might need some help with some PPI's (proton pump inhibitors) which cut down on stomach acid. The irritation already caused to the esophagus can cause your added symptoms of nausea. You might try some OTC acid reducers like Prilosec or the generic omeprazole.
135222 tn?1210432488 One recommendation, I was diagnosed with Hiatal hernia 10 years ago. I had acupuncture done for a few months, and the symptoms all stopped. Recently I had an upper endoscopy and no hernia was found. Maybe there was a misdiagnosis, maybe there's no relation, but I'm convinced it helped me. You may want to check it out. (Though I recommend finding someone who actually studied medicine in China. I've found these to be by FAR the best at the practice.
Avatar f tn I have been told after 3 endoscopes that I have a Hiatal Hernia,GERD and Barett's esophagus. I have been complaining for 10 years of Pain and spasms.as soon as I bend over in the morning it's all over for the rest of the day.I have been on Zoloft for other reasons for 6 years. Is this supposed to help with the spasm? I take prilosec but I still go thru a bottle of rolaid a week. Any suggestions would be very helpfull.
1094370 tn?1317134825 it took quite a while to calm down, but I also have a hiatal hernia as well that makes it diff to soothe, plus I was on pain meds and then antibiotics which kept my flare going...if u r off all meds that could play into this and u avoid food and drink triggers...it shouldn't be too long.
979080 tn?1323433639 000, so I would not worry about raising anything and take medicine. I also have a hiatal hernia and Gerd. My test results over the years which I get often tell me that nexium (same drug as prilosic) are not causing any problem at all.
Avatar f tn I had a CT scan a couple months ago and they discovered the large hiatal hernia. I asked my doctor if they needed to do surgery and she said "not unless it is causing alot of problems". They are trying to find out why I was so anemic in August. They put me on iron pills (also had a transfusion...4 units). Blood levels are normal now. Wonder if I have H pyloric????
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia on March 30. I am supposed to take this for three months and then drop down to once a day. Previous to my diagnosis I had taken 20 mg Prilosec OTC first once a day, than twice after my diagnosis, since the prescription was nearly $200.00 for just 2 weeks worth. I was still having heartburn at night so I finally filed the prescription. It really isn't doing any better than the first OTC that I tried per the Physicians Assistant.
Avatar n tn s Day) had stated that according to statistics, women who take certain acid reflux medications and proton pump inhibitors like Prilosec, Prevacid and Zantac have a 40% higher risk of bone breakage later in life. That was scary for me to hear. Nearly 10 years on Prevacid and it may have caused the bone problems....just great. What it came down to was choosing for me.
Avatar f tn The results came back “no obvious hiatal hernia”, even though the endoscopy showed one and the upper GI series from 6 years ago did too. Since the recent upper GI series said “no obvious hiatal hernia” my gastroenterologist said she doesn’t believe my GERD is caused by hiatal hernia. I went to a surgeon who specializes in repairing hiatal hernias for another opinion. He told me that he believes my GERD is caused by hiatal hernia and I should get surgery to fix it.
Avatar f tn I went back to the doctor in January and was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia and acid reflux based on symptoms alone. I took Carafate for 3 weeks, Prilosec for 2 weeks, and then switched to Nexium which I've been taking for over 3 weeks. Still nothing has changed. I'm burping alot which sometimes is like a hiccup then burp, it's strange. Even drinking water is sometimes causing problems.
