Prevacid long term

Common Questions and Answers about Prevacid long term

prevacid

Avatar m tn I am a woman in her late 30's. I have been taking omeprazole for 2 years now. I was instructed to take it by a ENT doctor for healing of my esophagus due to acid erosion(scarring) caused by silent reflux. (Diagnosed via endoscopy) I have noticed a decrease in hunger, lack of "growling" of the stomach. Has anyone else experienced this? Is long term use of omeprazole really safe?
Avatar f tn I can certainly sympathize with you....while I was on long term steroids, the puffiness along with stomach problems were terrible. Steroids are really harsh on the GI tract, it is good that the doc has you on Nexium/Prevacid to help block acid production. Maybe you need higher amounts of the medications to fully block the acid, I personally have to take double the dose while on Prednisone due to the pain.
Avatar f tn i have GP too, never tried reglan but domperidone worked pretty well for me and is extremely safe. inhousepharmacy.com has it for very cheap. also, there are herbs like ginger and shatavari that improve speed of digestion as well if you want to go natural. my biggest help has honestly been either homeopathy (try the remedy nux vomica) or hypnosis/visualization. and my personal opinion is that acid blockers are absolutely terrible for your stomach and digestion in the long term.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed today with a stomach polyp and told it was most likely a result of long term use of a PPI (in this case Pariet). Does anyone know if benign stomach polyps develop into something nastier, grow bigger, can be reduced by diet, or changing PPI med?? Thanks This discussion is related to <a href='http://www.medhelp.org/posts/show/234587'>polyps and nexium</a>.
1295419 tn?1276822872 Hi--I recently had an Upper GI for nausea and the test came back normal except for a "small amount" of reflux. I was surprised to hear this since I have never had heart burn in my life, even when I was pregnant. My GP does not want to put me on any medication since she said there are no symptoms to treat. She said to take 2 tums at night since it could do damage to my esophagus when I lay down but other than that I didn't need to take anything.
Avatar m tn There is a recent warning put out by the FDA that says that long term use of prevacid can result in low magnesium levels which in turn can result in irregular heartbeats. Look at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0000964/ for more info. I am currently being tested to see if prevacid in causing my heartbeat problems.
Avatar n tn PPI are very safe medications. I have not seen any of my patients who are on long term PPI develop this side effect.
168348 tn?1379357075 Well the Pedi GI actually said the prevacid may have added to her constipation issues! So we are lucky no long-term usage and my oldest only uses it 1-2X a month so I may just bite the bullet and get a larger script for 2X day and go from there to keep me stocked for the future ....
Avatar m tn What is the difference between Prevacid and Nexium in what it does and how it does it? Long term effects?... Is what I am feeling are effects from the aloe healing my esophagus or the medications?
Avatar f tn Hiatel hernia, GERD Acid Reflux and Larynix tumors are some of my long term problems now. Both from losing some of stomache, Esophageal damage and throat damage, from intubing along with lung damage from ARDS. I am now high maintainence. My Part D plan only allows certain generics during donut hole. My husband is also on a transplant list. Medical costs for us both are extensive. We do not qualify for any help since we always worked and saved for retirement. That nest egg has all but gone. Q.
Avatar f tn I have no food alergies, I am not on long term antibiotic therapy, I eat a healthy diet and do not lay down after eating. I havnt had any recent surgeries. I do have a family history of acid reflux, gallstones, hiatal(spelling) hernia, peptic ulcer and high cholesterol. Does anyone have any ideas? What diagnostic tests should I ask for? Is there anything else important to say that I am leaving out? Please help!
Avatar f tn Well for starters, Zantac is a drug in which most people build up a quick "immunity" to, if you will. It's effective in the short-term, but after 5 days really doesn't do what it is intended to do. It's good as an "until I get something from my doc after the weekend" cure. I'd have him evaluated by a PEDs GI (Gastrointestinal doc). They'll probably stick him on Prilosec or Prevacid. But both of those are better for long-term control for acid issues.
Avatar f tn try avoiding wheat i eat oatmeal rice dishes grits corn meal etc vegs fruits ckn turkey fish avoidd beef for now, MSG is bad, diet sugars make me sick.. hope this helps! long term nexium prevacid cause malabsorbtion issues , making more problems your dr should tell you, my mom has gerd can't stop rx and has vit b12 injections due too this long term use.
Avatar f tn I have never heard of a connection between pancreatits and pleurisy. Pleurisy is inflamation of the lining surounding the lungs and the lung cavity (the pleura) frequently resulting from a severe cough. As the two layers of pleura rub together with each cough they become inflamed. A doctor can tell the difference between pleurisy and other painful issues because it has a "velcro" like ripping sound on exhalation.
296025 tn?1233256719 WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF PREVACID USE WITH HEP C? SINCE ITS EXPENSIVE IS THERE A GENERIC FORM?
Avatar n tn i take prevacid for my gerd, can this cause atrial fibrillation This discussion is related to <a href='/posts/show/937646'>acid reflux</a>.
Avatar m tn It could be as little as an ulcer or as big as anything really, if you are diagnosed with something long term or chronic with treatment you are able to function as you did before.
Avatar n tn Evidently a recent study has shown that PPIs and histamine blocking medications used to treat acid reflux may contribute to bone loss. They apparently interfere with the way the body absorbs calcium, which can affect the strength of the bones and make them more prone to fracture. The study found that people who took either PPIs or histamine blockers once daily for a year or longer had an increased risk of hip fracture.
228936 tn?1249094248 Hi, I have some reflux problems and swallowing /throat problems that my doctor said could be from long term untreated reflux. Could this make it difficult to sing, ie, making my throat feel irritated while singing? This is a problem because I am a musician and am expected to sing sometimes.
Avatar m tn My husband also used Prilosec for two weeks to help his esophagus heal. It worked well, but he didn't want to be on a proton pump inhibitor beyond what was absolutely necessary, so now he goes the natural route. If you haven't already read about ppi's, you may want to just so you can be well informed. I know many people take ppi's everyday, but if you see the possible side effects long term use can bring, they can be quite scary.
547002 tn?1219797376 I quit prevacid on many occasions cold turkey. It caused massive lower stomach cramps and thick painful diarrhea. I recommend you get off it immediately, however, slowly ween yourself off. DO NOT quit cold turkey. Get on Zantac. PPI's truly messed me up. Made me 1000 times sicker than my GERD. Now I've been off them for 6 months and live a normal healthy life. Those are poison. Doctors will do anything they can to get your money, don't belive the ppi hype.
114870 tn?1210298346 t be anywhere near as strong as nexium/protonix/acidphex. Have to be careful on all these acid reducing medicines..they can cause long term issues and encourage bacterial growth (SIBO) in your small bowel with lowering your acidity level...least that's what i've heard *shrugs* Buuut in the meantime while you wait for your test, after you eat I wouldn't lay down for a good hour or 2 but if you have to prop your chest/head up to help digestion.
Avatar m tn After taking Prevacid, I gain my appetite back. The problem is, I have develope new symptoms after taking prevacid for 1 week. I am having very loose bowel movements, blood on the toliet paper when I wipe, indigestion, lower abdominal pain. Most importantly is I am having more frequent heartburn and chest pain, which I don't have when I am on the H2 blocker.
Avatar n tn Started Prevacid and also Strattera for ADD. We were able to wean off of the Prevacid and just stick to Strattera, as our peds thinks the Strattera helps him with the anxiety related to the GERD, and therefore he had no complaints of symptoms of GERD. In March we went off of the Strattera, and within 4 weeks the symptoms of GERD re-appeared ( Not eating, coughing, feeling like something is caught in his throat.) We went back on Strattera and Prevacid.
