Avatar m tn My dog jumped up on the counter and got my other dogs Med bottle and ate all the pills and chewed the bottle before I saw you. Will this hurt her?mit was a very low dosage of prednisone about 7 days worth.
Avatar n tn I was on 60 mg for seven days for poison ivey then stoped cold turkey am on day 5 of not taking and in bad shape please how much longer until back to normal please anything to ease my mind
Avatar n tn Took her back for one week checkup and vet explained large breed dogs some times react negatively to Prednisone by getting lethargic and haivng muscle atrophy. Cut her Prednisone in half and wanted to start her on Chlorambucil 2mg. I looked up that drug when I got home and learned it's used to treat cancer - and needs to be handled with gloves. I'm hesitant to give my dog that chemo-like drug.
1580703 tn?1651904887 thanks for any advice! I've been prescribed prednisone for 1 month at 10mg/day and heard that it can be bad for the liver and cause adrenal damage. Is this true?
Avatar f tn I recently had one of my dogs treated for a disc problem in her neck. She was given a decreasing dose of Prednisone to take over 10 days which helped her considerably. Now, my other dog (same size and age) is showing symptoms of the same condition. I want to try the Pred on him but I don't have any left. Instead, I have a large bottle of Prednisolone. If I gave Ruby 40 mg's of PredNISONE, would I now give 40mg of PredNISOLONE? Or would the dose be different?
Avatar f tn s a drug that is commonly prescribed to old dogs and I witnessed a neighbor get hooked on his dogs medication. His dog died in excruciating pain while he was high on the dogs Tramadols. It's a horribly addictive drug and getting off of it is worse than Vicodin or Oxys. Please, leave it alone.
Avatar m tn Dogs don't do well on long term steroid treatment. Are you sure it's prednisone/prednisolone that he's taking? What is he taking the steroid for? Did he have seizures BEFORE starting the corticosteroid? How long has he been taking the corticosteroid? These are all important questions before an answer can be attempted.

Avatar m tn He is on Denamarin ¼ tablet for small to mediun dogs, 1 Prednisone tablet 5mg in the morning, ½ 250mg Metronidazole pill in the morning, and ¼ Prilosec in the morning! At night he only gets ¼ Prilosec! He has been holding his own for about a year now. Yesterday he started the head tilt and really stiff walking. He pants and drinks lots of water. He was diagnosed with high liver enzymes. He does also have some mouth/teeth problems but can’t go under the anesthesia to get a dental!
Avatar n tn I have been told that the only effective treatment for my cat's asthmatic condition are ventilators but the prednisone given every other day seems to work fine. Why would the vet tell me that? Is there an issue with the prednisone?
Avatar m tn I am so sorry for your distress and especially your little one. When you had xray on heart....no heart enlargement?? xray of dog, did they lay the dog sideways and could you see the dog's trachea/bronchi tube? was the tube all the same size, or did it contrict and get skinny in the middle? Like the size of straw the in the middle restricted got littler then back to size of straw?? Plus, please get on computer and read, read about steroids in dogs!!!
Avatar f tn Has anyone used prednisone to lessen methadone or other opiate withdrawal symptoms?
82818 tn?1206989814 any subjection on itchy skin for small dogs. I've tried prednisone pills. All kind if shampoo's and after a couples og days she's back to rolling on the carpet and scratching. It just drives her carzy. She is a 5lds yorkie.
Avatar n tn Surgery was recommended but he is 13 and has a heart murmur so we opted for the alternative of steroids (prednisone) and strict bed rest for 4 weeks. He was weaned off his steroids and we had a great summer. About a month ago, we put him on a short course of steroids after he was seeming painful. He developed pancreatitis and had a trip to the animal hospital for 2 nights. With his heart murmur they had to delicately balance fluids.
Avatar m tn It is for the above reasons I strongly suggest you contact your vet, explain that you have started using the prednisolone you had left over from last year and ask about a new part-prescription, so you can taper off properly and slowly. The amount of tablets you have left are insufficient for safe withdrawal, so you will need a few more from the vet.
Avatar f tn My 11 yr/old beagle/sheperd mix has a large fatty tumor above her left front leg (she has several others, this is the largest). She also has occasional arthritis for which I give her Previcox as needed (1/2 a 227mg pill). The past two days I've given her Previcox cuz she seemed a bit slow to move around. Today I came home & she could barely walk & was curling the left front paw under. I took her to the vet, he said the tumor is pinching her radial nerve causing the paralysis.
Avatar f tn Thanks for the info, but it is daily that this has been happening. It got better after being on steriod therapy for awhile but only on the high dosage not intended for long use.
Avatar f tn It never ceases to amaze me how many people will give their dogs steroids (prednisone) without understanding the effects and risks. Of course your dog is hungry, that's what steroids do. I have always sought alternatives to steroids with my pets, and have ONLY used them with two dogs that were terminal with cancer. And THAT was only in their last few weeks to buy them (and me) a little more time and comfort.
Avatar m tn He was on a half a pill twice a day for three days then once a day for three days then every other day for six days. After the first dose of the third day of the cycle he started throwing up(yesterday). He hasn't been able to hold anything down for 32 hours now. The vet called in a script for "sucralfate" To help with his stomach but he can't hold down the medication for it to work.
2065896 tn?1373685384 Yep, prednisone (long-term) can cause diabetes both in humans and dogs. One of our dogs (a Toy Fox Terrier) was on prednisone for about 8 months due to health problems including allergies, he developed diabetes, and now is on insulin and a low-carbohydrate diet. (I think it's more likely in dogs to cause diabetes, I was on prednisone at high doses from 2-14 years old and I have some long-term side effects that do remain but I don't have diabetes.) Have you tried adjusting her diet?
Avatar f tn Thank you for the welcome and your comments. I had been taking prednisone for 34 months for symptoms of the polymyalgia. I had decreased this to 1 ml for 2 months before stopping it. The last month I had taken 1 ml of pred one day on and one day off for a week, then 1 ml with two days off for a week, then 1 ml with 3 days off for a week and so on until I had stopped. There were no sx's for a month, then both legs began to swell, and I could not bend my knee joints.
306455 tn?1288862071 Mary I would think Prednisone can alter doggy moods. I know its a common side effect in humans as well. Ive used Pred quite a lot over the years. ANd if your dog already has a predisposition to aggression, the prednisone may exacerbate it even worse..
Avatar n tn I don't know the life expectancy of either dog discussed in this thread, but I think any dog over 12 year old is, well old. Small dogs typically live longer than large dogs, I understand, still 15 is old. Loss of muscle control is typical of the failing of the body on older dogs, I believe. A vet may have something to help for a while, but sadly dogs don't live as long as we all wish they could.
Avatar f tn While looking for a prescription one day I found a bottle of prednisone that was prescribed to my partner for her chest infection. In desperation I started taking the 20mg tablets daily. I was about to give up by the 5th day when all of a sudden my pain started reducing! By the 7th day I was almost pain free! I was getting stuck into the housework and playing on the floor with my son! I was ecstatic! I've now been taking them for about 2 weeks.
9214378 tn?1408881584 So he was taken off the prednisone, but when the label was printed off, it was the wrong instructions and he was taken off too quickly. He acted like himself, except for drinking a lot, before he was taken off the prednisone. That was when he vomited and was lethargic. He was taken to the vet and he had a high glucose levels and his kidney and liver levels were messed up. But he urinated so then we prayed for him to eat. He was 14. He then had a seisure, was unresponsive and breathing heavily.
262527 tn?1285381659 t heard of an oral course of steroids for an exacerbation...only oral prednisone for a weaning dose to ease the symptoms of withdrawal from the IV form of steroid. Sorry no one got back to you but perhaps there is a reason for this such as the oral form not working fast enough to slow the exacerbation? Just a guess from me...hope things work out for you with the IV course though I know it is a pain to have to take 2-3 hours out of your day for it.
793908 tn?1294705109 s used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation and swelling. It is helpful to use with dogs that have endless itching, for example, and is even used for cancer and a variety of other illnesses. I personally have taken it for insect bite pain and swelling, and it made me feel good. But now, if you have a pancreatitis dog, my understanding is if they are on long-term prednisone, it must be stopped, becuz it can be the culprit in causing it.
