Common Questions and Answers about Prednisone weaning

Avatar m tn I would advise against weaning yourself off of the prednisone without your doctor's guidance. I would suggest you contact your provider and make an appointment to discuss your plan of action together. I am not sure what side effects you experienced with the Imuran. However it would be worth your while to discuss your next course of action with your prescriber and possibly go back on that medication.
Avatar f tn Prednisone is a mixed blessing. It is a hormone, a poloypeptide, and a signaling substance. While on prednisone the chances of getting many infections increases dramatically. It degrades the natural immune system. It reduces inflamation and the response to antigens, or non-self substances. In one study, with rats receiving daily doses of prednisone for six months every test animal developed multiple malignancies.
699217 tn?1323438700 For me prednisone was both a lifesaver and the devil drug. I have Crohn's disease and if it were't for the pred I probably would have lost a good portion of my colon. Then I became prednisone dependant and every time I would try to wean down I got so sick-once my adrenals crashed and I ended up in the hospital for 2 weeks. I was never on a very high dose-maybe 40 to begin with and then tapered down.
3061629 tn?1405458990 s the reason I have secondary adrenal insufficiency. Inadequate weaning of Prednisone almost killed me. It damaged organs and hpa axis never recovered. After 5 years of mega doses of vitamins/juicing organic veggies and HC, DHEA and thyroid meds my liver is working adequately again.
Avatar m tn Hi!I have a prednisone treatment since 4 months(100 mg a day to 0 mg a day) I'm actually taking 25 mg a day and noticed a moon face symptom since about a month . Is there anything i can do or take to counterbalance that situation?I should finish that prednisone treatment in 5 weeks....How long it takes to recover a normal face after that treatment????Thanks...
Avatar n tn Should be temporary. I had the same thing upon weaning down to 5 mg prednisone, started at 60 mg and by 5 mg lots of aches/pains. Took a few wks but eventually the aches ceased. Hope you're doing well on the Imuran - it's working excellently for me. Hate prednisone's side effects!
514349 tn?1272801633 My cat is on oral dose Prednisone for lymphoma. It's been a struggle every day to give it to him and the vet said it was only "buying some time". When this bottle i have is getting low, I want to discontinue it, but I know it cannot be stopped suddenly. What is the procedure for "weaning" him off it?
Avatar m tn Hi all- I am a 32 year old male who has recently been experiencing some MS symptoms: shakiness, vision issues, muscle spasming, weakness/tingling/numbness in left arm from shoulder down). I was put on a 12 day prednisone regimen and have been off of the drug for 6 days. While on the pred, I experienced insomnia, and slightly increased blood pressure, but my heart rate was around 60 and didn't change.
Avatar m tn Perhaps more importantly, shortly after the shin swelling/discoloration event I was also diagnosed with a Ischemic Colitis and Pseudomembranous Colitis wherein I was treated with two series of Prednisone starting with 80mg per day, weaning the dosage down over the following 6-weeks. After the initial series of Prednisone my symptoms eventually returned wherein it became necessary to repeat the series again.
Avatar f tn I was also given Methotrexate so that I can wean off the prednisone with out the symptoms returning. I have read of others weaning successfully. If you read other entries in the forum you will find there are many ways to treat, or more accurately, to manage the mastitis. Breast removal is an option. Not knowing what you have suffered, I am not in a position to advise you. I will caution you about any form of surgery. Avoid it.
Avatar f tn I then was put on 60 mg of prednisone for a week and found that I could not wean off it quickly without rebound symptoms. Over the last seven months I have been weaning off prednisone, I am currently down to 10 mg/day and experiencing exaggerated symptoms when compared to the small .5 mg decrease every 3 days of my taper. My symptoms include vision changes, dizziness, some balance problems, labile blood pressure, fatigue, and hyperglycemia.
Avatar m tn diag. with severe UC..2/09...prednisone 80mg..to start weaning would come later..asacol also, but would later switch to lialda...much easier for me....also imurin,75mg..daily...everything pretty good...till I begin the weaning process, once it gets down to the 20mg....I'm only speaking of the pred...all else is same...we "jockey", if you will, around the weaning, back to 2o for extra 2 weeks..then resume weaning......
1024532 tn?1380058352 I have had RA for 1 year now. I am on methotrexate, leucovorin, and prednisone. Could the pain I am experiencing mainly in am after getting up til about noon, be from my meds or my condition? It is located in the middle of my upper back. Any advise I am visiting my rheumy this Fri. Thanks as always.
Avatar n tn three months ago i received a shot of prednisone for fire ant allergies. i have a minor case of cirrhosis, the shot was 120mg, i was weighting at 135lb and in poor health. that night i experienced the first headache of my life. it was a sharp pain lasting a second right in the middle of my brain. next couple days i had a brain fog that was also new to me. naturally i did not take the steroid pills for weaning. and now three months later, my body has changed.
Avatar f tn I am in the process of weaning on hydrocortisone after 4 years of SAI and have made it down to 17.5mg per day but when I rescued to this 17.5 mg my breasts became sore. I've been on 17.5mg per day for 6 days now......feet are sore but I'm doing better than expected.
Avatar f tn I had a horrible withdrawal when I had a three day infusion (no oral Prednisone weaning)--it hurt to be touched, every part of my body was in pain. My doctor said if I had a three day course again she'd give me a step-down so I didn't "crash" next time. But then she ordered a 1 day/month course. I'm not sure I need it at this point, but she wanted to do something because I'm not dx and therefore no DMD.
Avatar f tn I have had 2 bouts with tongue cancer and the removed one third of my tongue several years ago. Almost 11 months ago I developed a mouth full of ulcers and have seen sent, dentist, periodonist. Nothing has helped. My primary Dr finally suspected Sjogrens autoimmune disease and had to wait 3. Months to see a rhuemetologist. He had me get a biopsy and diagnosed Sjogrens.
262527 tn?1285381659 t heard of an oral course of steroids for an exacerbation...only oral prednisone for a weaning dose to ease the symptoms of withdrawal from the IV form of steroid. Sorry no one got back to you but perhaps there is a reason for this such as the oral form not working fast enough to slow the exacerbation? Just a guess from me...hope things work out for you with the IV course though I know it is a pain to have to take 2-3 hours out of your day for it.
Avatar f tn Hi, How long have you been taking prednisone? You really need to try to find another way to controll your allergies without the nasty stuff. It has a good purpose, but it is really hard on the body. Puffiness is really a mild side effect which is reversable. Many of the side effects from long term use are much more severe and not reversable, My personal experience is that it takes completely getting off the nasty stuff for the puffiness to go away.
Avatar n tn my 9 year old dog has been on prednisone for 6 weeks for ITP and we are weaning her off now.
1166205 tn?1263076852 I literally could not get off the couch because it hurt too bad and I was quickly put on 20mg daily of Prednisone (which at the time I thought was the greatest drug cause it worked so well).
Avatar f tn He ordered steroids for 2weeks, then colcrys. Neither helped so ordered prednisone 60 mg a day and did a blood test so could order Imuran. I am so desperate and miserable, I agreed to try.One week on prednisone I started feeling fuzzy headed, weak all over, terrible mood swings, jittery and so depressed. He started me on the Imuran too. I called the nurse last week and told her the ulcers weren't any better and couldn't function like this, so I am now weaning off the prednisone.
Avatar m tn Flare ups are common with abrupt discontinuance, but not with proper weaning of prednisolone. Hope this helps. Best.
Avatar n tn He said this spot had nothing to do with her right side temple pain, which was probably due to the initial virus. He is weaning her off the prednisone, and said she needs a blood test 4-5 weeks after she finished the prednisone. He also advised another MRI in approx. 90 days. Now, obviously my wife is incredibly worried. She hasn't slept, and after looking up glioma on the internet, she's even more worried. These next 90 days are going to be extremely difficult.
Avatar f tn I took my standard poodle to the emergency vet yesterday because his eyes (he has cataracts) looked like they had a film of blood on them. After having an eye exam I was told that he has uveitis caused by an underlying disease. We had chest xrays done which showed abnormalities, and after an examination the vet discovered that my dog's lymph nodes were enlarged. My dog has been stumbling for the past two days when on walks, coughing & panting after walking upstairs.
Avatar f tn Have you ever been on prednisone for a long period of time and when weaning off the medication experienced any unpleasant withdrawl, or side effects? I'm having a heck of a time getting off this s---. I hate the medicine. I wish I had of researched it like I do with all my other drugs. The puffy face, the way sores don't heal, the coughing and weezing. Anyones experience with is greatly appreciated.

1611319 tn?1378618399 I hate to ask my doctors the question of this taking my life and how soon. I am on prednisone that we are weaning off and Cellcept 3000 mg per day. It was considered in the mild to moderate stages, but the docs are not sure how this should be treated. no studies have been done on this and am kinda in limbo....
1627204 tn?1302012537 We are starting a slow weaning on the prednisone. I am doing well with the Methotrexate Folic Acid and Plaqinim and all the vitamins. I am looking forward to losing the prednisone puff that is developing around my face. All and all I am feeling really good about the plan. Hope everyone is having similar good experiences this summer. The lack of activity on the furum gives me hope.
