I have had poison ivy for about 2 weeks now. Started out on my ankles and began (and still, but not as much) spreading to areas of: knees, arms, stomach region. I noticed that overnight (after taking prednisone for the first and LAST day...took a small dosage, couldn't stand the side effects so I was taken off of it) my ears became itchy, and then very tender, warm and red the next day. Also noticed dry skin just behind the ears. Is this something to be concerned about?
I recently cam down with moderately bad case of poison ivy. I went to my dermatologist who was not present and was seen by the physicains assistant. She prescribed a burst of prednisone (5 days 2x20mg, 5 days 1x10mg). I took my first dose immediately (2x20mg). The rash began to subside but I don't like the side effects (insomnia) and would rather sit out the poison ivy. I wish the p.a. had discussed the potential side effects before prescriing this highly potent drug.
I contracted poison ivy a little over two weeks ago. I was prescribed prednisone and completed it after 10 days. I still have areas that are very itchy and irritated. They are now hot and itchy--not as bad as the original case but can his still be active after the prednisone?
I know what you are saying. I came in contact with poison ivy/oak 3.5 months ago on the arm at work. I did throw away all gloves and cloths. after medication with it completly disappearing, I find when I sweat the rash comes back in the same area and becomes itchy. Then seems to go away several 2-24 hours later. Funny thing is, Im now 31 years of age and when I was about 11 I had come in contact with poison Ivy/oak on my hand/fingers.
i was just diagnosed by my dermatologist as having sun allergy,, most likely caused by prednisone, which i was on for what i thought was poison ivy ,, although i never touched it, my son brought it in the house while he was workingas a landscaper..
I have had poison ivy for almost two weeks. Monday since it had spread to my legs from my arms, I went to a doctor. He gave me a shot, some methylprednisol, and other pills for the itch. I'm am waking up at night itching. Also, I'm treating the itch with calamine lotion and other creams for itch. How long does it usually take for the itch to stop. Thanks.
I have never had poison ivy before. I have these little tiny bumps, almost blister like, thet itch so bad. i have them all over my knuckles, my neck, the side of my face and my eyelids. I am concerned about my eyelids. the ones all over my knuckles are breaking open and are really starting to hurt. The itching is driving me crazy. There is no relief from it. I have tried non itch cream, iI have this stuff called ivy dry. The itching will not quit.
I am a 33 year old woman. I contracted poison ivy and, after several days of worsening symptoms was given a course of generic oral steroids from a local clinic. The prescription was a 10 day course and I was not informed of the side effects that I was to suffer. Because of my harried state at the clinic I neglected to ask what those side effects might be. I would know soon enough. I immediately started bloating and gaining weight. My appetite became insatiable.
s no way to completely avoid weight gain or moon face as a side effect from prednisone. They are both known, common side effects and many people who have to take prednisone get them. I know about them first hand - I've had to be on prednisone quite often and often at VERY high doses, and I always get the moon face and weight gain with it, even if my eating/exercise habits don't change a bit.
Prednisone is a steroid and is used more for allergies, poison ivy and inflammation like with rhumatoid arthritis. They are not a medication that people want to just take recreationally. DAN DAN is the manufacturer's mark. Your family member needs to be careful because Prednisone, if taken for a few days - cannot be stopped suddenly and it must be tapered back.
I got rashes on my face and neck/ right eye partially swollen due to poison ivy, sumac or oak. I took prednisone 20 mg (1 )tablet right away plus 1 tablet of 10 mg cetirizine, felt little bit better after an hour, itching has subside.
About 3 weeks ago I got some sort of contact dermatitis (or so the doctor says). He was convinced I was in poison ivy, I was positive it was a bite since I wasn't near poison ivy, and it started as three small dots that I found when I woke up. Long story short, it exploded into a disgusting, pussing mess, and spread violently, so after steroid creams did nothing, I was put on prednisone, 50mg x 5 days.
When I went off the Prednisone, the rash came back immediately in all the same places so the Dr. prescribed another 3 week higher dosage (he had thought it was poison ivy initially but I disagreed wholeheartedly but still went along with the treatment). After the 3 week course, as I predicted, the rashes came back right away. I now have an armpit rash and this arm rash. The facial eczema was less severe this time and I was able to treat it myself with Eucerin. Thank you for any advice.
Prednisone does have nasty side effects when taken for LONG periods of time at high doses. The 8 or 9 day taper you are on will not cause the systemic side effects that you have read about. Those are worse case scenarios and you are far from that level of usage at this point.
As Erin said, the short term side effects you can expect are slight weight gain (which if you remind yourself that it is the pred and not real hunger you can avoid - I have done that), and maybe moodiness.
t believe the medical community when they say poison ivy does is not a recurring malady. I had a horrible case of poison ivy when I was just 12 years old. My two friends and I had our last little 'tween' summer dreams smashed after unknowingly choosing to make a club house in a spot intensely thick with poison ivy.

I had mild acne as a teenager up until an incident where I had an episode of very bad poison ivy on my face, neck and ears right before my senior year of high school. For the year following my acne became progressively worse, and during this time I was using some BP. My palms/inner hands also became very peely and would go from extremely sweaty/oily to extremely dry. When I got to college freshman year, I began using clindamycin and retin-a-micro on my skin.
Been about two weeks, seen three different doctors, all have diagnosised this as poison ivy. Was on prednisone (no impact), an antibotic (didnt hit it), multiple steroid creams. I am nervous to go back for a fourth visit to the DR because I dont have the money. Any help anyone could provide would be appreciated.
