I take it due to lupus. I have to take it. The side effects are only in the first trimester and my high Risk doctor said it's very rare. The pros out weigh the cons if you absolutely need it.

there are other meds that are better for lupus without all of the side effects... if you end up having it be sure to shop for dr.'s and find someone who knows what they are doing..

I am also diabetic @ bood sugars are higher than usual is this a side effect of prednisone,have 3 more days on prednisone should I stop?

s no way to completely avoid weight gain or moon face as a side effect from prednisone. They are both known, common side effects and many people who have to take prednisone get them. I know about them first hand - I've had to be on prednisone quite often and often at VERY high doses, and I always get the moon face and weight gain with it, even if my eating/exercise habits don't change a bit.

Those sound like normal side effects of prednisone. Nasty drug but can save a dog's life. My golden has been taking 50mg daily for 2 months and the side effects are horrible.

I have hair loss way before prednisone. Hair loss is a system of Lupus. 25% of people with Lupus get some hair loss.

I am on week one treating type A and feeling really bad side effects. I feel almost ready to do something drastic. I called the psychologist at the clinic and she said that the side effects are worse in the first week. Is this true? As long as you continue to take steroids you may have the side effects. The risks and benefits are weighed, before discontinuing steroid medications. So, please discuss this with your doctor. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

I am really surprised Erin that they removed you from the prednisone with Lupus? When I was first diagnosed back in 2001 they called it Lupoid Hepatitis. I probably won't be able to come off the prednisone because the joints in my upper body was so bad prior to treatment that I couldn't even fasten my bra. That took at least a year after being on the prednisone & imuran before that went away & I never want that back again. I couldn't even get a coat on by myself.

I've noticed that after 3 months of daily prednisone that I have developed hair on my upper lip and jaw line. Has anyone else experienced side effects like this? I don't see how it will go away on it's own. How do you treat unwanted facial hair? This is quite upsetting to me. Thanks!

Personally I would stay away from steroids if at all possible - at least for long stretches of time. 20+ years ago I was diagnosed with MCTD (a few years later, Lupus). I took prednisone daily for years, and periodically after that. I now have osteoporosis, which is one of the side effects of prednisone. Short term, steroids are great, but now I wish drs.had been more cautious about prescribing them for long periods of time...

I don't know if it's a documented side effect of prednisone (lord knows it has enough of them anyway!) - but I certainly had it when I was on prednisone. the longer I was on it, the worse it got. It very well could be dose related, too, because I did notice it was worse when I was on the highest dose (120 mg daily at one point for over a year!). Fortunately, I was eventually able to get off the prednisone, but still need to go on it periodically for asthma, lupus and arthritis.

Prednisone is a very, very powerful drug, so good and bad side effects. It shuts down your own adrenal system at anything over 5-7 mg a day I believe it is, so a whole bunch of psychiatric side effects are possible. Like you, I too have been on loads of meds. In your place I would ask as much as you can during your biopsy, and would also bombard your PCP with questions. 5 days 30mg; 5 days 20 mg; 5 days 10 mg. As I got better, side-effects were worse than the illness. Gastritis required re-starting sucralfate at least at bedtime, agitation and mood swings limited my cognitive function. I limited my driving because of distractibility. I'm 70 with ADHD.
