She should ask how much Prednisone and how long as it has side effects and long term effects, I am trying to research it online as I have chronic Urticaria since May, (Hives) it may not have been the spider bite caused it she could be allergic to something, there is a very long and interestin thread on the Allergy site tell your friend to go there ,it gives severall ideas,what to do what to take, quite honestly I believe it will run its course and I will just have to put up with it,
Hi again. Do you mean that you fear side effects from this dose of Prednisone that you didn't get from much larger doses of the IV? Could you say why this is?
Actually, IVSM is intravenous methylprednisolone, and it's considerably stronger than just Prednisone, even at the same dosage (as I learned a few weeks ago when we had quite a discussion here about this). So you've had much more of this than you'd thought.
I am also diabetic @ bood sugars are higher than usual is this a side effect of prednisone,have 3 more days on prednisone should I stop?
Also.... I have broke out in hives again since I took it. How am I supposed to know whether its from the initial problem or if I have an allergy to prednisone!?

Hi I have had severe Hives for 2 mos. This is the worse outbreak I've ever had, and my last case of Hives was 9 yrs ago. I was in the ER 2x this past month, put on IV steroids, antihistamines & Ranitidine. I had extensive blood work done for a multitude of alleries- all negative, Lupus, Lympoma, Lymes disease, CAT scan, all negative. I've done 2 rounds of Presnisone (which helped greatly), but 2 days after the last Prednisone pill- boom the hives came back bad.
Those sound like normal side effects of prednisone. Nasty drug but can save a dog's life. My golden has been taking 50mg daily for 2 months and the side effects are horrible.
I've stopped taking methimazole 12 days ago because of the strong side effects (hives, joint/muscle pain, dry throat). Though these effects are lessening, I wonder how long it might take for them to be completely gone.
Because the hives were going away and the side effects were worse than the hives. They tapered me off in about a week.
Last Weds night i woke up with itchy hands. First instinct was a Benadryl. Did that for 2 days, then started taking the Prednasone I had left from last time. Not as bad on the hives this time. More itchy and when i scratch (oh, you try not to...it's a natural instinct) I get red and then the welts pop up. Its calm for a while then flares up again.
Prednisone does have nasty side effects when taken for LONG periods of time at high doses. The 8 or 9 day taper you are on will not cause the systemic side effects that you have read about. Those are worse case scenarios and you are far from that level of usage at this point.
As Erin said, the short term side effects you can expect are slight weight gain (which if you remind yourself that it is the pred and not real hunger you can avoid - I have done that), and maybe moodiness.
I've noticed that after 3 months of daily prednisone that I have developed hair on my upper lip and jaw line. Has anyone else experienced side effects like this? I don't see how it will go away on it's own. How do you treat unwanted facial hair? This is quite upsetting to me.

Prednisone is a very, very powerful drug, so good and bad side effects. It shuts down your own adrenal system at anything over 5-7 mg a day I believe it is, so a whole bunch of psychiatric side effects are possible.
Myself I was revved up, lots of energy, very out of it though and then horrible anxiety when they tried to taper me off - really painful.

Also, mentioned Mast Cell Tumor but said they dont think thats what she has since her initial exam was good and she is not having any side effects of hives. She eats normally, is still active, bowel movements are fine, no vomiting, etc. Told the vet I wanted to find a cause to the hives and cure them rather than just suppress them with steroids. I dont want to keep my dog on steroids as it is not good long term. If this was a bee sting, these hives shouldnt persist in my opinion.
was red and flushed only on head neck and face.....nowhere else......was told prednisone side effect....but being riddled with panic disorder I checked latuda site......rare but deadly side effect called nms...neuropaletic malignant syndrome.....symptoms are. Excess sweating,Bp changes,heart beat changes, rigid muscles confusion,fever,breathing changes......says if have any of these to call needs treatment in hospital......is this thing I'm going thru nms?

For the past year, I have been suffering from Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria. At first, the hives were quite sporadic, occurring once or twice a month, but since December 09, they've been occurring daily. They appear at different areas on my body (including my palms), but rarely on my face, and usually last 2-3 hours. I've been tested for allergies, both food and environmental, and the only positives were certain molds, trees, and grasses.
