Prednisone high dose

Common Questions and Answers about Prednisone high dose

Avatar n tn There should no long-term harm from a single use of prednisone, even at such a high dose. I do question why you are having a CT scan, because an MRI scan with dye contrast is less toxic (the different dye itself is different) and less dangerous), as well as being less dangerous from the standpoint of radiation exposure.
Avatar f tn It very well could be dose related, too, because I did notice it was worse when I was on the highest dose (120 mg daily at one point for over a year!). Fortunately, I was eventually able to get off the prednisone, but still need to go on it periodically for asthma, lupus and arthritis. I do notice a change in my memory status whenever I am on it, although definitely not as bad as when I was on the high doses for so long.
Avatar n tn It is unusual for a person to be taking oral prednisone for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), especially in a dose as high as 20 mg daily. That dose puts you at risk for a lot of steroid side effects, such as muscle weakness, bone thinning, cataracts, fragile skin, hypertension etc. You should ask your doctor why you need 20 mg of prednisone. You may also want to consult with a lung specialist about this and other inhaled medicines available to people with COPD.
Avatar n tn Please mention to your vet that the high prednisone dose is causing unacceptable side effects.
1523893 tn?1301579774 Last week my neuro put me on a 3 day dose of Prednisone to hopefully offset the flare I was in the middle of. He put me on 3 days of oral pred, quite a huge dose (25 pills per day, each being 50 mg). I took my three days worth of pills hoping I would see a difference, but have yet to feel any better. In fact I am worse and I am wondering if I should see a physician about my symtoms. Weight gain, no energy, facial swelling, horrible fog, painful skin on my neck and shoulders.
Avatar f tn my hr has been sat on 80 odd all afternoon which i know is not HIGH but feels high to me and freaks me out, i dont see the specialist again for 10 days as i live in a regional town and he only comes in once a fortnight, dont know if i should just stop taking the prednisone or try to put up with the fast hr, my hr normally settles back down to its usual 60 after my pm dose of sotalol thanks
Avatar f tn I'm starting my prednisone today and I'm really scared - could anyone who has taken this medication for this condition give me any advice? Did it seem to help? How long were you one the prednisone? I'm already obese and am really worried about the weight gain from prednisone. I'm hoping that I won't be on this medication long.
1024532 tn?1380058352 Definitely follow your doctor's advice, but don't be surprised if you find you need to taper off at a slower pace. Some people must taper off .5 or even .25 mg at a time. It might take a bit of trial and error to find the rate that works best for you.
699217 tn?1323438700 Then I became prednisone dependant and every time I would try to wean down I got so sick-once my adrenals crashed and I ended up in the hospital for 2 weeks. I was never on a very high dose-maybe 40 to begin with and then tapered down. I was lucky I never got the moon face-but it did mess with my mind, emotions, hormones etc. I am happy to say I haven't had to take it except for short bursts during flares in three years.
Avatar m tn Blood sugar range is ideally 70 - 140 range (and 80 - 120 range even better) It would seem that your diabetes is fairly severe to have such a major effect from a single dose of prednisone (but what was the dose? A high dose could cause such dramatic increase in blood sugars). Anyway, I hope things are returning to normal for you now. Please come back and let us know how you are going. Ask any more question.
Avatar f tn m feeling a little better about the high dose all at once.
635835 tn?1272539383 (8) It is hoped that results from this study will help clarify questions regarding dosing, efficacy and safety or high-dose oral corticosteroids. It will, however, not provide direct evidence for the high-dose prednisone prescriptions (e.g., 1250 mg daily for 3 days) most commonly seen by pharmacists in British Columbia. Studies specifically examining the efficacy of high-dose prednisone regimens in this setting have not been published.
Avatar n tn I had protected vaginal sex but not sure condom was intact or not
Avatar f tn I agree you definitely need to see an endocrine doctor - not only to get the proper weaning dose/instructions/assistance, but also to address the hyperglycemia from the prednisone. Long term high glucose levels can cause their own set of serious problems. I had to be on insulin for a time while I was on the prednisone, but fortunately, as I got weaned down from the prednisone, my sugar levels also went down and I no longer needed the insulin.
Avatar f tn m a terrible liar. Also what if he gives me a lower dose? Will my pain get worse? What dose should I be on? What will happen if he won't give it to me? Are there withdrawal side effects? Is there anything I can do to help or avoid my morning calf pain? How can I convince my doctor that I am serious about getting on the prednisone? Any other helpful advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
312330 tn?1245176752 ve also changed the dose/schedule of the adderall so that my afternoon dose is the smallest dose of the day.
Avatar m tn 3 month ago I had a exposure and after that I was on prednisone for 2 month (during 2 month ago) with a high dose (60 mg per day ), and I took two Elisa test and both came back negative . first on was at 4 weeks after incident (befor using prednisone ) and was negative with 0.6 ( < 1 negative ) and second one was 13 weeks after incident (after 2 months using prednisone ) , and now I'm confused why change the number of negative result after 2 month ?
Avatar f tn Unfortunately, there's no way to completely avoid weight gain or moon face as a side effect from prednisone. They are both known, common side effects and many people who have to take prednisone get them. I know about them first hand - I've had to be on prednisone quite often and often at VERY high doses, and I always get the moon face and weight gain with it, even if my eating/exercise habits don't change a bit.
Avatar n tn I have just been on a round of oral prednisone (12 days, tapered dose) that my doctor prescribed me for a severe eczema flare-up. I took the last dose 2 days ago. My eyesight is bad, but my contact prescription has not changed over the past 4 years. Over the last 3 days, I have noticed a slight blurring in the vision of my left eye, which comes and goes over the course of the day. I know that secondary glaucoma can be a side-effect of prednisone, which is what I assume is happening here.
262527 tn?1285381659 In oral dosing the absorption is slower. Also, the amount of oral Prednisone needed to equal the IV dose is 1200mg. A typical high dose is 60mg to 80mg. There would likely be a great deal of stomach upset. So, all the way around, the oral dose would seem to be a poorer choice for the action that is needed. I, too, am sorry no one got back to you.
233622 tn?1279334905 I think this will serve you well, LA. I got lots of hunger pangs on prednisone. Even right after I ate, but since it's a low dose and if you are able to ignore them (I worked hard on doing that...lol) you'll should be fine. What dose did they start you at? I hope the steroids helps you LA, you've been needing a break!
Avatar f tn My 2.5 year old Golden is on high dose prednisone to treat an auto immune disease. He started with 75mg a day and after about a month his dose was lowered to 50mg. He's been on it for about 2 months and will likely be tapered off (if all goes well) within the next 4-6 months. I'm grateful that this drug saved his life but the side effects are terrible. I can put up with constant urination but he's really having trouble settling at night.
1716896 tn?1308880762 I was taking 20mg prednisone twice daily for 3 weeks, and my last dose was monday night. Today is Thursday, and I am developing an itchy rash over my whole body, do you think it is related? Also, my heart rate is also 104 at rest and I have a dull headache.
