Avatar n tn Aluminum hydroxide (ALOH) is currently recommended by Board Certified Veterinary Internists at the University of Davis, veterinary hospital as the product of choice to use in pets to effectively bind and eliminate excess phosphorus from the body. It has effectively replaced Epikacin for this purpose. Epikacin, is an old Calcium based product, formerly used to bind excess phosphorus and help eliminate it from the body, in pets with kidney failure.
Avatar f tn If he is vomiting daily then i am glad you had him checked out. This is where being a vet is like being a riddle solver...lets go back to the original issue, the pruritis (itchiness). If this responded to prednisone is increases the likelihood of atopic dermatitis (environmental allergies) and greatly reduces the likelihood of food allergies. Food allergies rarely respond to prednisone.
3116756 tn?1341922971 should have Predisone available to them, for IMMEDIATE use, if an emergency situations occurs. ( if cortisol levels start to bottom out )....Prednisone is synthetic cortisone, and could save your dogs life. As Brendan stated, some vets will prescribe prednisone at a low dose during the induction period hoping to prevent the cortisol from bottoming out. It sounds like your First week of the induction period is over, but you still need to be watchful...
Avatar f tn I've been on 3-10 mg of steroids (prednisone is how it is called here) for the last five months because I continue to have mild to severe attacks that need me to have a portable oxygen tank a nebulizer and of course my broncodilator inhaler wherever I go. This dosage has worked well for me, varying it depending on my symptoms.

Avatar m tn They are inexpensive and work quickly and effectively to reduce itching, and for short term use they are relatively safe. However steroids have numerous side effects, such as increased thirst, increased urination, increased hunger, and weight gain. With prolonged use at high doses, steroids cause liver enlargement/increased liver enzymes, weakened muscles and ligaments, infections of the skin and bladder, thinning of the skin and hair loss.

Avatar m tn The following link is an example of a research study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, comparing decompressive surgery for disc disease and electro-acupuncture. The findings show that the results were slightly better in the acupuncture group: http://avmajournals.avma.org/doi/abs/10.2460/javma.236.11.1225. Avatar m tn He was on a half a pill twice a day for three days then once a day for three days then every other day for six days. After the first dose of the third day of the cycle he started throwing up(yesterday). He hasn't been able to hold anything down for 32 hours now. The vet called in a script for "sucralfate" To help with his stomach but he can't hold down the medication for it to work.
Avatar n tn Hi, IMO 8 mos is a VERY long time w/ no improvement. I would definitely ask about a biopsy to see what this actually is. If you can, see a veterinary dermatologist. You and your kitty need some answers. This biopsy will give you the answers you need, and that way you'll be able to give the correct meds that will actually help the problem. Prednisone, is a "band aid" when the vet doesn't know what's wrong and not good for your cat long term.
Avatar n tn I have a 2.5 year old doberman and for the past year or so he has scratched/chewed his stomach and legs extremely badly to the point he has almost no hair on his stomach and his nipples have become enlarged from all the scratching. We've gotten allergy tests that havent given any results. The vet has only suggested putting him on prednisone, which when we do give it to him makes him gain a lot of weight and sleep all day. Has anyone else experienced this?
Avatar f tn I feel that she prescribed too much prednisone for him in September (I wrote a post about it in here). It was 40MG daily and he had a severe reaction to the drug. My husband immediately took him to a vet hospital and they said that she had prescribed him the maximum dosage. They agreed that it was too much and especially for a dog who is 13 years. His heart was racing so fast, that they couldn't even get a pulse on him. I also don't have any possible explanations for the high creatine.

Avatar m tn My cat has a hole in his leg, I cleaned it up but was told he might need a antibiotic. My doctor gave me azithromycin 5 daily dose. I was wondering if I can use it on my cat? I can't take him to a vet, so I'm trying to handle this at home.
1580703 tn?1651904887 thanks for any advice! I've been prescribed prednisone for 1 month at 10mg/day and heard that it can be bad for the liver and cause adrenal damage. Is this true?
