Avatar f tn My son is 15 and has suffered with asthma since age 5. He has asthmatic bronchitis and allergies. He's been on prednisone for attacks since age 5. He takes allergy shots. He blows 124% on PFTs when he is well, lower when he is sick but still 100+. Dr. said his lung capacity is approx. 120+ percent of normal. This last episode, Dr. found reduced but good lung function as measured by PFT, no sinus infection and says he is moving air.
608104 tn?1352587153 Thanking physicians who accept my need for less oral prednisone for asthma exacerbations with respiratory infections. I appreciate the steroid oral inhalers and nasal inhalers as a better way to reduce mental agitation affects on my old brain.
Avatar n tn I ended up needing 3 rounds of the levofloxacin, and ended up needing to do a week of each for the prednisone, so it was more like 60mg for 7 days, 50mg 7 days, 40 for 7 days, etc. until I was finally able to come off of it and was no longer having breathing issues. She also had me on advair 250/50 for this time period to get me off the prednisone faster. With all that prednisone, I went up to about 250lbs.

Avatar f tn org to find one in your area, or ask your veterinarian for a referral) for other options to help his respiratory disease which may not have as many side effects as prednisone.
Avatar m tn My Best Friend was sick with a hacking cough, and within 2 days of her spreading her germs I caught upper respiratory infection. I took antibiotic, and tried taking prednisone and symbicort. I simply cannot deal with side effects. Took some natural stuff too, need to get rid of this awful wheezing. What can I do?
Avatar f tn At birth he had pulmonary hypertension unknown etiology and was placed on ECMO for 3 days. We nearly lost him. Long story short, his lungs have been perfectly healthy up until about 2 months ago. He had an acute onset of wheezing, retractions, dry hacking cough. X-ray showed a slight inflitrate. He was treated with antibiotics and was started on pulmacort and xoponex. 3 wks later, he had another episode. Symptoms all the same but this time x-ray showed bronchitis with no infiltrate.
Avatar f tn What is prednisone? What is it use for? What are all of the side afects you can have when you are on this medecation?
Avatar n tn My 70 lb lab mix is on Prednisone and doxycycline because he tested positive for heartworms. He has had excessive thirst peeing and panting, increased respiratory rate and heart rate .I'm concerned about this but the vet says it's necessary in order to prepare him for the immiticide injections. Anyone have a similar situation?
Avatar f tn I went to Doctor today and he put me on prednisone for the week. I am supposed to do 40mg for 2 days, 30 for 2 days, 20 for 2 days, and 1 for 2 days. I took my first dose today and wonder how long it takes for it to work? I still don't feel great which could also be the cold I suppose. Who gets a cold in the summer anyway? Awful.
1450484 tn?1284904131 (1) Prednisone destroys your immune system. The cure for your infections (prednisone) is likely the cause. (2) I suffered very badly with a productive cough so bad I thought it would tear me apart until a respiratory therapist suggested Mucomyst (aceltycisteine). The cure was immediate and I have not coughed since I started using it. You might also want to try taking 500 mg of vitamin B5 daily. Like Mucomyst it thins mucus (though not as drammatically), but it also reduces inflammation.
Avatar f tn The information you have provided suggests that the primary problem is respiratory (in your lungs or upper respiratory tract) and the first step should be for your doctor determine what is going on in your lungs or sinuses as it is likely that the other symptoms you describe especially “headache all the time” and fatigue are likely to be secondary to the respiratory problem.
Avatar f tn I was prescribed 1 20 mg tblet per day for 5 days. The awful buzzing stopped for 3 weeks after I used it for 5 days. Then it started again. So I went to ER and they said I had so much wax in my right ear that it was impacted and covering my ear drum so they cleaned it out. I had no buzzing for two days; also they prescribed the Prednisone again for 5 days. I took ONE AND REALIZED IT WORK IMMEDIATELY. The awful noise stopped.
Avatar m tn Was sent home with Tamiflu, Prednisone, and Azithromycin (to ward off any complications). They also gave me a breathing treatment which cleared me out somewhat. Now, the next day, the heavy respiratory congestion and cough is back full force. My stomach muscles are killing me from coughing. What is the best and quickest way for me to rid myself of the congestion? I hit my rescue inhaler but it doesn't help. Normally my Asthma is mild.
608104 tn?1352587153 With a recent upper respiratory virus infection, I used a tapering dose of prednisone: 5 days 30mg; 5 days 20 mg; 5 days 10 mg. As I got better, side-effects were worse than the illness. Gastritis required re-starting sucralfate at least at bedtime, agitation and mood swings limited my cognitive function. I limited my driving because of distractibility. I'm 70 with ADHD.
Avatar n tn s, and has had 2 left thorcatomies over the last 3 years to remove a bronchogenic cyst from her chest cavity. She has had much exposure to prednisone, flovent and other respiratory medications. I am devastated that she seems to be starting puberty early. Is she? Should I be worried? Could all of the medications to treat her respiratory issues cause this? Should I look to take her to a pediatric endochronologist? Please help.
Avatar n tn Lets get the basics out of the way. I'm a 51 year old female, a little bit overweight, but in otherwise good health. I have been suffering for a month now with a progressively worsening cough. I usually get this (to a lesser extent) every year, its just a persistent cough that lasts usually till around march. This year, It has gotten so bad, that i have been to my primary care four times, an urgent care once, the ER twice, and to one pulmonologist, looking to go to another.
Avatar n tn ) In addition, I went for a PFT while taking prednisone for over 2 weeks (another acute asthma exacerbation), which revealed that I am above predicted values and have essentially normal lung function. But there was mild acute respiratory alkalosis, (I am assuming the latter is from the asthma exacerbation?) What does this mean? Did the prednisone inflate the results, thus arguing reversibility of the obstruction? and does this rule out copd?
Avatar f tn That would pose a big problem for going to NJ. However, I am sure that Australia has an excellent respiratory hospital as well that you could go to for evaluation. I just can't point you to it as I am not familiar with your country. A little internet research should help you find a good teaching hospital close to you at the very least. Feel better.
Avatar f tn I was sick with a upper respiratory infection about 2 weeks ago I went to the doctor he said it was bacterial.
Avatar n tn I was put on prednisone and rhen switched to inhaled steroids. I suffered thick tenacious phlegm and coughing so severe that it exhausted me. I have since refused both prednisone and inhaled steroids and am much better for it. I use natural anti-inflammatories. However I do not have IPF, but COPD. I don't know if that makes a difference. P.S. My pulmonary MD has a hard time accepting that I reacted in this way. Also the treatment caused me to suffer adrenal fatigue.
Avatar n tn Prednisone is often given orally to patients who need to take it for any duration. For instance I use prednisone for a few weeks when my asthma is very bad. In order to get faster relief, the prednisone can be injected into the body. This is done only in the hospital as an emergency basis, because the asthma patient or any patient in respiratory distress is at high risk of death. After that the patient is then given oral prednisone till the lungs have recovered to 80% of their lung function.
Avatar m tn 3 pills for 3days, 2 pills for 3days, 1 pill for 3days), and Acyclovir 800mg (1 tab, 5 times per day, for 7 days). I am having a couple of skin reactions above and beyond the shingles "pox." First, I am developing little pin point spots of blood showing up all over my body (not in the Pox areas). They are tiny, pore sized, blood blisters(?) the size of a pin *****. They are smooth, plump, not itchy, bright red when they appear, fading to dark red over days.
Avatar n tn we took him to the vet last october(2008) and the diagnosis was suspected asthma. He was given Prednisone 5mg for ten days, then with usual 10 day reduction schedule. he was also given Clavamox 62.5 tabs 1 orally every 12 hours until gone (20 days). No improvement was noticed and these symtoms seem to be getting a little worse and more frequent. Please help with further advice. We've already spent alot of money and just need some direction.

Avatar f tn I am 29yr female who has been diving for 15yrs. The dive doctor had scheduled me to see a respiratory specialist to rule out any other problems. Do you know what tests they might conduct? Is it possible to develop asthma and copd later in life? And most important, will I still be able to dive?
Avatar f tn I have been on prednisone for 10 yrs, currently on 5mg in am, and 2 mgs at night. I was taken off immuran in June due to hospitalization for pancytopenia. First time this respiratory failure occurred, I was on Methotrexate, the second time I was on Immuran. My ANA was positive and my titer was 1:320, and the ANA pattern was nucleolar in 1998. I looked up Sarcoidosis and I fit the ethnic group, and the sx seem to fit me, but noone has ever said I have enlarged lymph nodes on CT or CXR.
Avatar f tn My female cat is 21 years old and has irritable bowel syndrome as well as and intractable upper respiratory problem. She has been on daily prednisone for the IBS, but the vet said over time it would suppress her immune system and her upper resp. problem will become worse. That is exactly what has happened. We tried the nebulizer, but that didn't really help--she still sneezed her head off and sprayed mucus everywhere!
