Avatar n tn He looked at the scan and said it looked like the start of Emphysema. He also did a blood test for a possible genetic link and told me I am doing everything I should be as far as lifestyle. I am not overweight, I am actually thin and work out. I googled this disease and now I am so scared. I am only 42, female and from what I have read it seems it is going to shorten my life. Some sites say 5 years, some say it can be weeks(!!), is that true?!
Avatar f tn Why were you hospitalized and what treatments did they give you there?
Avatar f tn In looking at the drug interaction information, it seems that those who are taking the corticosteriods, are even more at risk for muscle rupture and more at risk for developing pneumonia. A chest x-ray a couple of days ago confirmed that I do NOT have pneumonia now, but I can still hear sounds in my lungs when I do deep breathing.
Avatar n tn It was prednisone and inhaled steroids (for emphysema) that gave me adrenal fatigue. Adrenal fatigue with high cortisol in the early stages causes anxiety and panic attacks. Since high cortisol depletes vitamin B5, high dosages of that vitamin help enormously. I take that and ashwagandha (Indian ginseng) which normalizes cortisol.

17484539 tn?1580565249 I'm down with acute bronchitis which I get every 2-3 years and which normally lasts 1-2 weeks & then I'm symptom-free. i'm on a round of Levaquin 7 days) and prednisone short term (5 days) covid test negative and no pneumonia, however on the chest X-ray was written "signs of COPD changes." What the heck does that mean and how is COPD really diagnosed? I'm an ex-smoker, stopped in 1982.
Avatar f tn In its early stages (like yours) a chest x-ray is not diagnostic. As for prednisone and inhaled steroids, be very careful. They cause osteoporosis, destroy your immune system and create adrenal problems. I have suffered two of these. Try natural anti-inflammatories. Of course you know you must stop smoking. I had better luck doing this gradually until I was off it altogether. It helps if you put your cigarettrs in a relatively inconvenient place - like in a drawer in the next room.
Avatar n tn Should someone with mild emphysema get the vaccine? My pulmonologist said you don't have to with mild emphysema but the press about the swine flu and respiratory issues is frightening. what do you all think?
Avatar n tn Prednisone is often given orally to patients who need to take it for any duration. For instance I use prednisone for a few weeks when my asthma is very bad. In order to get faster relief, the prednisone can be injected into the body. This is done only in the hospital as an emergency basis, because the asthma patient or any patient in respiratory distress is at high risk of death. After that the patient is then given oral prednisone till the lungs have recovered to 80% of their lung function.
1450484 tn?1284904131 (1) Prednisone destroys your immune system. The cure for your infections (prednisone) is likely the cause. (2) I suffered very badly with a productive cough so bad I thought it would tear me apart until a respiratory therapist suggested Mucomyst (aceltycisteine). The cure was immediate and I have not coughed since I started using it. You might also want to try taking 500 mg of vitamin B5 daily. Like Mucomyst it thins mucus (though not as drammatically), but it also reduces inflammation.
Avatar f tn Was your cardiologist who prescrived prednisone, for how long? For allergic reasons, normally the treatements are intensive and very short (3-5 days).
Avatar n tn Had upper GI showed no esophageal abnormalities, no evidence for reflux or esophagitis. Due to this increased weight loss and our primary doc doing no testing whatsoever, had a cardiologist I work for look at him, he diagnosed with H pylori and prescribed 2 week triple pack. Also ordered CT chest which showed diffuse emphysematous changes and localized area of parenchymal opacity suggestive of a region of prior infection with scarring and calcification.
Avatar n tn I am a 41 year old male. My doctor told me that I probably have the onset of emphysema after smoking for 25 years. He said if I stopped smoking now, it wouldn't progress. I was glad to hear that, of course, but I remember years ago my uncle developed emphysema years after quitting smoking and it got worse and worse and he eventually died from it. Can someone clarify this?
Avatar n tn With you not having smoked for 20 years, it is quite unlikely that your current dry cough is a sign of emphysema. However, the onset of persistent cough, dry or otherwise, at any age is a reasonable cause for concern. The standard definition of chronic cough is one that lasts longer than 3 months. If your cough has lasted longer than that, you should have it investigated to be sure that it is not a sign of a disease other than emphysema.
Avatar f tn Although people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) usually have elements of both chronic bronchitis and emphysema, one can have chronic bronchitis, without emphysema or, more commonly, chronic bronchitis with a wide range of emphysema severity from minimal to quite severe. Chronic bronchitis is characterized by airway obstruction to air flow but there is not a good correlation between the degree of obstruction and the amount of emphysema.
Avatar n tn Tuesday I was told I have emphysema (soon to be determinded because on my xray the impression said possible COPD) and made an appointment with a pulmonologist. I was also having chest pains for which I went to the doctor for then he ordered a chest x-ray. He did say the chest pains and emphysema weren't related but could possibly be from stress. There are prescriptions to help stop smoking.
Avatar n tn org/diseases-conditions/emphysema/symptoms-causes/syc-20355555 Use your inhaler if they prescribed that for you. Are you currently symptomatic? Anyway, with regards to covid 19, it's a respiratory (and more, apparently) illness. So, yes, having a lung condition will put you at greater risk. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/need-extra-precautions/people-with-medical-conditions.
Avatar f tn You can have emphysema, mild for a while and not be symptomatic. Sounds weird to me too. I got bronchitis and went to the doctor who referred me for a chest x-ray. Came back that I had moderate emphysema. I was stunned because I had no symptoms at all. So, I got a second opinion with a pulmonologist. He did the spirometry and looked at the x-ray. Said yes, I had moderate emphysema and sent me home with an emergency inhaler, advair and told me not to fly!
Avatar m tn You are wise to proceed with pulmonary function testing as that is the “gold standard” for establishing the diagnosis of emphysema/COPD. Regardless of the results of PFT’s I sincerely hope that you will make every effort to stop smoking and never smoke again. In that case the doctor’s statement on emphysema will have served as a valuable wake-up call.
Avatar n tn how safe is it for a person with emphysema to have a needle biopsy? Is a pulmonologist able to determine how advanced the emphysema is to accurately determine if they are a good candidate for a biopsy? Also, when a biopsy is done of a lung nodule, is it common to take a sample from "Emphysema like" tissue. Does the radiologist have the authority/knowledge to make that decision? Any expertise would be greatly appreciated.
