Hi. The difference between prednisone and prednisolone is that one is the precursor to the other. Prednisone is activated by enzymes in the liver to turn into prednisolone. They do have similar uses but prednisolone is more readily absorbed by the body. Prednisolone is usually used when there is liver toxicity or liver failure involved.

It is a very serious illness and unpleasant for your dog. And Prednisone treatment for 6 months is a long time. Prednisone is usually fine with no of very few side effects when given for a short course, But I guess your vet feels that this is the best treatment for your dog.
Can you ask your vet about supportive treatments to cope with any side effects?
Alternatively, maybe you could consult with a herbal or holistic vet, if you can find one near you or within driving distance.
hi just a question about steroid use. I dont have MS but was recently diagnosed with Autoimmune Encephalitis after having a brain biopsy 3 weeks ago. Are you under the care of a pulmonary specialist. Also other comorbid conditions can aggravate the asthma, such sinusitis, GERD and unknown allergies. s considerably stronger than just Prednisone, even at the same dosage (as I learned a few weeks ago when we had quite a discussion here about this). So you've had much more of this than you'd thought. The side effects are pretty similar for both substances though, and Prenisone is a big component of IVSM.
Did you have bad side effects with the IV? If so, you won't necessarily have them with the oral Pred, given the much lower dosage.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people will give their dogs steroids (prednisone) without understanding the effects and risks. Of course your dog is hungry, that's what steroids do. I have always sought alternatives to steroids with my pets, and have ONLY used them with two dogs that were terminal with cancer. And THAT was only in their last few weeks to buy them (and me) a little more time and comfort.

Yes, the panting is not uncommon with Prednisone. This steroid causes some dogs to become less tolerant of higher temperatures, so to help, make sure he has a cool place to rest. The hotter it is, the more uncomfortable he will feel and the more he will pant. It is also worth remembering that until the taper is complete, you would be advised to keep him relatively calm and in a restful state - long walks, running, playing and over exertion will just make things worse.
