Avatar n tn On top of all of that, because of the prednisone, i gained 60 lbs and canned shed them because i cant exercise!!! I'm at the end of my rope, i just really need help......
Avatar m tn ve seen my doctor and was givin blood tests to make sure i have no diseases. I was givin prednisone 20mg and after two days of taking the meds im itching even more. Should i continue taking the meds or stop?
Avatar f tn The only treatment that has caused the swelling to disappear is taking prednisone. I had been prescribed prednisone each time this has happened. Allergy medicines such as Benadryl have no effect. I am quite frustrated because each occurrence has been while I was traveling, and has caused me to go get emergency care (one time being out of the country). The only thing I can think of is different climate, being in warm climates?
Avatar f tn The ones on the backs of my knees itch/burn so bad and they make the back of the knee swell like there are grape clusters there for about a half hour then go down. Anyhow, doc put me on prednisone + Allegra and said to call if they come back as they probably wouldn't..well here I am 3 days after the prednisone and starting to icth like heck again! Also, I am VERY tired all the time. UGH I am so tired of all this tiredness and itching!
Avatar n tn Good luck with this my daughter is 16 and we have been dealing with this for 2 years now and they call it chronic hives and she had been on prednisone, allegra, singular, zyrtec and benadryl all at the same time and is breaking through all of that. We have even seen a specialist in Charleston, SC but it is still an ongoing battle. I hope they can get your sons under control because it truely burdens their lives. Good luck to you!!!
Avatar n tn Hives (medically known as urticaria) are red, itchy, raised areas of skin that appear in varying shapes and sizes. They have a tendency to change size rapidly and to move around, disappearing in one place and reappearing in other places, often in a matter of hours. Many cases of hives are "idiopathic," meaning no cause is known. Others may be triggered by viral infections or medications. But you can’t blame niacin as it was discontinued long back.
Avatar n tn Then next time the doctor prescribes her on another type of antibiotic and then same thing happens, she is okay the first time she has to take it and usually the second but around the second or third time over a course of 3 to 5 years, she gets the urticaria again after taking the same antibiotic that she used for 3 or more years. Then the same pattern happens with other antibiotics that she has to take for a UTI etc.
Avatar f tn Finally, my doctor recommended me to an allergist. The allergist had me taper off the prednisone and put me on 100mg Allegra in the morning and 10mg Zyrtec at night. She tested me for every allergy. I came back to being allergic to nothing. We also did a blood tests for my thyroid, cancer, graves disease, and various other diseases. My thyroid levels came back normal but my auto antibodies came back high, over 400.
Avatar f tn The most likely triggers for acute urticaria are allergies to pets, horses, latex and foods, such as shellfish and nuts, bee or wasp stings, allergies to medicines,Viral infections, such as glandular fever and herpes, dental and sinus infections, fungal infections, blood transfusions and vaccines. The cause of chronic urticaria is often more difficult to identify.
Avatar f tn Chronic urticaria, especially the autoimmune type, is often resistant to antihistamine treatment. They usually require immunosuppression and medications such as prednisone and cyclosporine may be given. There has been several studies already which have shown effectiveness in using cyclosporine in the treatment of chronic idiopathic urticaria, who fail to respond to conventional therapy (ref: http://www.e-ijd.org/article.asp?
Avatar n tn She should ask how much Prednisone and how long as it has side effects and long term effects, I am trying to research it online as I have chronic Urticaria since May, (Hives) it may not have been the spider bite caused it she could be allergic to something, there is a very long and interestin thread on the Allergy site tell your friend to go there ,it gives severall ideas, what to do what to take, quite honestly I believe it will run its course and I will just have to put up with it,

Avatar n tn acute and chronic(when hives persist for more than 6 weeks). The most likely triggers for acute urticaria are allergies to pets, horses, latex and foods, such as shellfish and nuts, bee or wasp stings, allergies to medicines,Viral infections, such as glandular fever and herpes, dental and sinus infections, fungal infections, blood transfusions and vaccines. Avatar f tn I get this itchy red rash when i sweat, and I get hives when i sweat in the water. Claritin does not help, and I refused to take Prednisone from my doctor (for many reasons). Ive traveled to a lot of tropical places, so i took a natural anti-parasite medication, but it did not help. Is there a correlation between urticaria and a yeast overload? Also, where should i go next to try and relieve this problem? Thanks!
Avatar n tn In this hives develop 2 to 5 minutes after contact with a warm stimulus and it disappears after 1 hour or so. Heat urticaria is diagnosed by apply a test tube of warm water to the skin of the forearm. The characteristic hives should develop within minutes. Take some antihistaminic like Benadryl or Claritin and apply some calamine lotion on the rashes. If the symptoms persist then topical or oral steroids may be needed. Please consult a dermatologist in that case. I hope it helps.
Avatar n tn I tried Doxepin too and had to stop because of the side effects, I have urticaria too and take some Reactine, Benadryl, Zantac and on some treatment that works for me, you don't know what his causing the urticaria????
Avatar m tn I've had itching from the chest up including neck, shoulders, face, scalp for 10 years now. I've had biopsies that show urticaria and have tried every medication known to man. I've also had ANA and thyroid tests which were all negative. Has anyone ever been completely cured from this horrible itching??? I'm at my wit's end here!
Avatar f tn only limit myself to how much of an ice-cream i can eat, before my tongue and lips start to swell up and hurt.... I have read many forums regarding cold urticaria, and many people and drs have said that it usually onlys lasts for 5-6 years..... I have had it for 10 years now, ans have learnt to live with it... My only concern is that I have a 6yr old son and a 2 yr old daughter, and I worry that they may develop cold urticaria later in life from me?
Avatar f tn They finally decided to give me a steroid shot and sent me home with 6 days of prednisone and an antihistamine to take every 6 hours that doesn't work. I also put Lamisil in case it was fungus. It looked like the welts were going down .About 8 hours later seems like welts are coming back an sms really itchy again.please help if you found something that works!
Avatar n tn Feeling that as I type this now actually with some lower back pain which i also find a bit weird. Is there any relation to migraines and urticaria ( i have never found the cause and i'm thinking its probably an autoimmune problem now - lupus and RA have been ruled out.) I do have vitiligo but it never spread past 2 fingers. I'm suffering!

Avatar m tn I have urticaria too and I take Benadryl, Reactine, and Atarax and it helps so much but Prednisone helps more but you can't not take that all the time, its like a treatment, I have water urticaria so its very hard to get away from that and sweet and rain etc...
Avatar f tn Came up with nothing. This was the beginning of September. After putting her on prednisone and taking her off of all other medication (she'd been on Wellbutrin and an anti-ulcer drug) there has been very little progress. She just takes a lot of benadryl to relieve the constant itching. Has anyone else seen this kind of thing?
530191 tn?1214162811 I was on that for seven years and finally got a sensitivity to it and it was no longer effective. With autoimmune urticaria vs. chronic idiopathic urticaria (which they said was what i had for eight of the ten years) I couldn't use antihistimines at all with effect, doxepin was the only one! Plaquenil is our next option. However using synthroid (synthetic thyroid) daily has done more for my hives than anything used thus far.
Avatar n tn In this case you need to rule out the cause for the hives or urticaria. Urticaria is usually triggered by allergens, such as drugs, foods, insect bites, inhaled substances, in response to sunlight, cold, heat, stress, exercise, or a viral infection. Other common allergens are pollen, mold, dust, pet dander, or cosmetics. Food allergies like to gluten, lactose, sea food, and alcohol etc too should be looked into. It could also be due to new soap, talcum powder, clothes etc.
Avatar n tn I have had poison ivy for about 2 weeks now. Started out on my ankles and began (and still, but not as much) spreading to areas of: knees, arms, stomach region. I noticed that overnight (after taking prednisone for the first and LAST day...took a small dosage, couldn't stand the side effects so I was taken off of it) my ears became itchy, and then very tender, warm and red the next day. Also noticed dry skin just behind the ears. Is this something to be concerned about?
