Avatar m tn t sound like yours is ready. Dogs who are loved and cared for really do seem to want to live and be around their human family. For his cough you might want to think about human cough medicine. Years ago our pit had a cough like you are describing as a result of the "dog version" of MS. The vet suggested giving her human cough medicine to help the cough and it did. Please keep posting and let us all know how your "fur baby" is doing. Hugs and tail wags to you both.
82818 tn?1206989814 I had this with the Dachund I had, they gain a lot of weight on Prednisone ,and he drank copious amounts of water, I may have been unlucky but he got diabetes and the Vet said the prednisone certainly hadnt helped, have you ever thought of googling in case there is any Natural remedy out there, I will also check around I go to a great Health food store they may have Animal stuff. .
Avatar m tn My dog jumped up on the counter and got my other dogs Med bottle and ate all the pills and chewed the bottle before I saw you. Will this hurt her?mit was a very low dosage of prednisone about 7 days worth.
612551 tn?1450022175 -) Benadryl does not contain prednisone. And I am willing to be that it was the pred that helped your dog the most: it is known in vet-circles as a 'miracle drug' because it can be used to heal alot of things. I just googled temeril-p and here is what I found: Composition Each tablet contains trimeprazine tartrate (USP) 10-[3-(Dimethylamino)-2-methylpropyl] phenothiazine tartrate (2:1) equivalent to trimeprazine, 5 mg, and prednisolone, 2 mg.
Avatar f tn Hi. The difference between prednisone and prednisolone is that one is the precursor to the other. Prednisone is activated by enzymes in the liver to turn into prednisolone. They do have similar uses but prednisolone is more readily absorbed by the body. Prednisolone is usually used when there is liver toxicity or liver failure involved. There is no great difference between them, other than the above, however ...
Avatar n tn deterioration due to old age...most common treatment may include Prednisone and the pain killer Tramadol wich CAN be taken w/ Predisone...
Avatar n tn s muzzle. Prednisone does work great, but the side effects can be very bad-diabetes and a suppressed immune system which will make kitty more vulnerable to infections. I personally use an INHALED steroid which are much less likely to cause those problems-I'm not sure if these are available to cats or not. I'd definitely ask the vet about that-it would control your kitty's symptoms and make him/her a much happier kitty!
Avatar n tn Took her to the emergency vet and they prescribed Tramadol and Robaxin (pain and muscle relaxer). Took her to our normal vet on Monday and he said to continue those meds and also gave her a steroid shot. She did well throughout the week... still stiff but seemed to improve. Last night, Thursday, she seemed to be in pain again. She wasn't as bad as she had been on Saturday but was walking stiffly and holding her head oddly again.
Avatar n tn The test showed that she was allergic to dogs, cats and dust mites. We have three dogs. We have had them for her whole life. Is is possible that she is just becoming allergic to them. She never had the asthma symptoms in years past. She has suffered headaches for many years though.
Avatar f tn Shampooing once a week with a medicated shampoo helps remove allergens from the skin. Omega Fatty Acids are a great supplement to add to a dogs diet and take some time to kick in but are cheap and safe and help not only with skin health but also with arthritis, cardiovascular health, and the overall immune system. Lastly, antihistamines can be useful is taking the edge off. Managing atopic dermatitis is always a case by case basis so discuss your concerns with your vet and good luck.
Avatar f tn I have always sought alternatives to steroids with my pets, and have ONLY used them with two dogs that were terminal with cancer. And THAT was only in their last few weeks to buy them (and me) a little more time and comfort. If my vet wanted to prescribe steroids, I would demand a good, SPECIFIC reason why, then research alternatives. Just my opinion, but any DRUG should always be a 'last resort'. There is a cost/benefit ratio attached to all of them.
2065896 tn?1373685384 Our dog has a severe allergy which we are unable to find the cause of and she itches. Without prednisone she will rip her skin and bleed. We have tried all of the available anti histamines which have not worked. We even sent to America for Benadryl and that was useless. The Vet says if she continues to use prednisone the dog will get diabetes. Unfortunately she has now the pot belly of Cushing's disease and is always hungry.
Avatar m tn 5mg every day, but the pants started on 4/12/2014, so I took him to the ER, that is when they told me this was a common side effect of Prednisone. On 4/14/2014 I took him to our regular Vet and we have started the Prednisone taper, which I am comfortable with. My question is: He seems so uncomfortable, is there anything that I can do to make him breathe better or feel better? Or do we just have to let him "suffer" till this taper ends and the Prednisone wears off?
Avatar f tn do I wait until he is in such misery with the kidney failure or do I spare him from that and euthanize now ?? I am a nurse and I have seen many patients linger and suffer.. wishing they could have went longer but us people do not have the ability to euthanize like our dogs do. But at the same time,,, how do I know when to let him go ? I dont want him to suffer any longer than he has to... his entire life has been a battle, and he has been a trooper, but I think the fight is leaving him...
9214378 tn?1408881584 m thinking there may have been several things going on there, including the possibility of diabetes (seizures are not uncommon in seriously ill diabetic dogs). Diabetes can also affect both the liver and more so the kidneys over a period of time and when maybe the symptoms haven't been obvious, therefore appropriate treatment isn't given early enough. The reverse can also be the case ... that is, the kidneys may have been affected first, which then caused the glucose levels to rise.
793908 tn?1294705109 Dear Sandra, You messaged me, so I shall reply. The only thing I know about prednisone is it's used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation and swelling. It is helpful to use with dogs that have endless itching, for example, and is even used for cancer and a variety of other illnesses. I personally have taken it for insect bite pain and swelling, and it made me feel good.
Avatar m tn Our dog Lilly has lymphoma and has been on prednisone for the last few months. She now has iatrogenic Cushing's and it is getting really bad. He can barely use her hind legs. We cut her Prednisone in half, but I have no ide if this will work or not. I can't make her suffer... Does anyone have any success in this type of situation?
Avatar n tn Took her back for one week checkup and vet explained large breed dogs some times react negatively to Prednisone by getting lethargic and haivng muscle atrophy. Cut her Prednisone in half and wanted to start her on Chlorambucil 2mg. I looked up that drug when I got home and learned it's used to treat cancer - and needs to be handled with gloves. I'm hesitant to give my dog that chemo-like drug.
Avatar m tn It is a very serious illness and unpleasant for your dog. And Prednisone treatment for 6 months is a long time. Prednisone is usually fine with no of very few side effects when given for a short course, But I guess your vet feels that this is the best treatment for your dog. Can you ask your vet about supportive treatments to cope with any side effects? Alternatively, maybe you could consult with a herbal or holistic vet, if you can find one near you or within driving distance.
1738039 tn?1310732266 She is on 1/4 tab of Prednisone (5mg) and on Clavamox for 8 days and will be starting Zeniquin 25 mg 1/4 tab daily. I wish i could show you a pic of her skin it looks horrible. It started at 4 months old and she is now 14 months old. The vet said she has pemphigus fol autoimmune disease. But could have hypothyroidism or something else. She gained 14 oz she is 3.13 chihuahua.
4413820 tn?1354210055 I have a 2 year old female American Bully that has a terrible rash and odor eminating from her skin and especially her feet. After two visits to t$200 each and scripts for prednisone and script shampoo and a change to Nutri-Max Lamb , our poor baby keeps breaking out.. I read somewhere that this could be related to a yeast infection that she may be getting. Could anyone please suggest a plan of action and a different food brand as this is not working.
Avatar f tn Hi. I would definitely get into the doctor . It could be a myriad of things and without additional symptom information, it is hard to say what it might be. Because you mention dogs and trees, I think you may be suspicious of Lymes, is that right? I know it exists in France (gotta love Google.) Bon chance!
Avatar f tn Does Prednisone make them not have energy, she will not even get up and walk any, which she has been really tired lately and hasnt been playing much, now she is just sleeping all the time except she will wake up for a few minutes and cry and scratch and then she goes back asleep. How long is Prednisone usually used for in a dog and has anybody ever used Royal canin anallergenic food.
3116756 tn?1341922971 I'm sorry to hear that....I have been scanning older posts, hoping I could find some info for you. I found a post that recommends the following website. Avatar f tn I am looking for an OTC ear wash that has steroids and hydrocortisone in it. Right now he is taking Benadryl and prednisone. I am thinking that she wants to get him off of the oral steroids and use the wash as a replacement. I cannot remember the name of the wash from the vet but it is pricey and am hoping to be able to get something just as good but somewhat cheaper. Any suggestions as for products or recomendations?

Avatar n tn My sister has a golden doodle about 1.5 years old who has had numerous health and behavior issues since almost the first day. He is allergic to rice, potatoes, duck and various environmental elements like grasses. He is on a special shots for these allergies. However he has always been disinterested in food but now he is refusing to eat and has lost 4 pounds within a couple of weeks. The other day the only thing they could convince him to eat was a boiled egg.
Avatar f tn In terms of the MM alone, the overall response rate for dogs treated with melphalan and prednisone chemotherapy is 92%, with 43.2% of dogs achieving a complete response and 48.6% achieving a partial response. There is therefore every good reason to use this combination to treat the MM. The survival time with treatment ranges, but the mean average is about a year and a half. This could be much the same for well managed kidney disease.
