I'm going to check out Chewy for the Dasuquin, and will call the vet tomorrow about prednisolone. Our other cat was on it for years for IBD, I can't see why it couldn't be tried for this one, even if it was just for a short while.

I don't know the weight of your kitty? for a 11 lb. cat..(6kg) for instance the dosage can be 1 mg per kg. therefore up to 6mgs.
but of course all that depends on what the treatment is for and health of your kitty.

If you do not choose to biopsy, and while waiting for the culture and sensitivity results, your vet could try treating your cat with prednisolone, vitamin E, and with the antibiotic Zithromax. The prednisolone and vitamin E would be for the auto-immune part of the disease and the Zithromax should cover the secondary bacterial infection. Zithromax is excellent for upper respiratory infections and it also is effective against Bartonella.
Prednisone is activated by enzymes in the liver to turn into prednisolone. They do have similar uses but prednisolone is more readily absorbed by the body. Prednisolone is usually used when there is liver toxicity or liver failure involved.
There is no great difference between them, other than the above, however ... it is normal practice to begin at a low dosage, rising to a level that's appropriate for the weight of the dog.
Few years back, when my mom was washing toilet with acid.. she felt some irritation.. suddenly her one of the eye got reddish.. she went for treatment, and after some days, the eye came back to normal.
But now, the same got reddish again, after multiple check up with the eye doctor, she prescribed "Prednisolone acetate ophthalmic suspension USP" and she used for a week.. now her eyes are 70% ok.
About 4 weeks ago I got a red itchy rash on my chest. The skin is red with what looks like ives or small bumps. I have used Eurax cream and Bach Rescue cream and Zertec. My doctor prescribed steroids "prednisolone 5MG which I have been on for 6 days now with no improvement. I have attached a photo of the affected area in my profile .
i may have taken ofloxacin and prednisolone eye drops in my eye 5 times in a day instead of the 4 times like i was supposed to do.will it cause any harm?
The Clamavox has been replaced by Clavaseptin, but we are told that it is a brand name for the exact same thing. But we have reduced the amount of Prednisolone to 1/2 tablet (i.e. 2.5mg), on approximately a 36 hour cycle.
If anything we think that his condition is either holding steady or deteriorating slightly. And of course when he comes to the end of this course of antibiotics (today) then probably things will get worse again.
So we have a very difficult choice.
Dogs don't do well on long term steroid treatment. Are you sure it's prednisone/prednisolone that he's taking? What is he taking the steroid for? Did he have seizures BEFORE starting the corticosteroid? How long has he been taking the corticosteroid? These are all important questions before an answer can be attempted.
He said it is usually a behavioral issue and not always infection ( for cats) i treated her as i was instructed until i saw that her issues began again. I sent out a sample and culture to a lab and she had infection. E-coli, high amylase, blood, wbc's and her microalbuminuria was > 90. her t4 for 2.7 but her free t4 was very high. he suggested putting her on methimazole, pred and cephalexin suspension. so i did. she was on ceph for almost a month, pred almost everyday and methimazole.
Also, for prednisolone and prednisone, the doctor doesn't just"advise" you to taper.
Hi jjackson, you can give some people meds like tums to cats but antibiotics need to be prescribed from the vet only because the dosage and type of infections cats get are different from the types we get and it can be lethal to give people meds to cats especially a pregnant one. The antibiotic you mention is in the tetracycline family and can cause birth defects in humans so do not give it to your cat, take her to the vet.
As a traditionally trained holistic veterinarian, I have has success using holistic, natural therapies for cats with IBD.
We use a home made diet(1/3 lean protein such as a chicken breast, or lamb, salmon, veal, turkey, duck; 1/3 long acting carbohydrates like sweet potatoes,or any kind of potato, rice, pasta or oatmeal; 1/3 veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, peas etc. Cook it up and mix together, add a little (1/2 teaspoon) extra virgin olive oil.
5mg twice daily for a week, 5mg once daily for a week, then 2.5mg once daily for a week, 2.5mg every other day for a week, and so on until we were back down to the 1.25mg every other day. The prednisone did not seem effective, so we switched to prednisolone. In any case, for about 2 months Hudson was on a very high dosage of these anti-inflammatories. He developed diabetes and pancreatitis and had to be hospitalized for 10 days!
It was prescribed for me after cataract surgery along with prednisolone (a corticosteroid). My dosage of both was 4x per day for the first postoperative week, 3x per day for the second, 2x per day for the third, and once a day at bedtime for the fourth week.
Since Nevanac is an NSAID, I think of it as "ibuprofin for the eyes". I had no difficulties with it.
I am worried that the prednisolone might react with the oroxine therapy which I am taking daily for my Hashimotos hypothyroidism. The doctor prescribed prednisolone eye drops with a tapering dose over a week or so. This seemed to take care of the issue.
However, a couple of weeks later and after going off of the eye drops as prescribed, my eye flared up with the same symptoms. The doctor recommended the same treatment. The eye once again improved.
1 week after the second incident, I was nearly tapered entirely off of the eye drops. However, my top eyelid became quite swollen and painful.
ve had bronchitis and only took prednisone for a small amount of time. The best treatment for me turned out to be switching from Flovent 110, my normal dosage, to 220 whenever I felt a cold coming on. If it did progress to get worse, then I would take Foradil (which really helped improve my night time lung function but typically isn't for a short-term treatment) in addition to whatever bronch medication they gave me and lot's of heavy duty cough syrup.
