Common Questions and Answers about Pravastatin liver damage

225237 tn?1333142599 This is a simple statin, it is very safe with a risk of side effects between 2% and 4% depending who you listen too and only .02% of serious side effects. These numbers make this a very safe drug. Look here for more; "Pravastatin is generally well tolerated; adverse reactions have usually been mild and transient. In 4 month-long placebo-controlled trials, 1.7% of Pravastatin-treated patients and 1.
Avatar n tn If the increase is severe, you may need to stop taking it, which usually reverses the problem. If left unchecked, increased liver enzymes can lead to permanent liver damage. Certain other cholesterol-lowering drugs, such as gemfibrozil (Lopid) and niacin, increase the risk of liver problems even more in people who take statins. Because liver problems may develop without symptoms, people who take statins have their liver function tested periodically....." See: http://www.mayoclinic.
Avatar f tn When I searched it online is that bilirubin number can go up if you take medication like Pravastatin. Pravastatin is not recommended to patients to liver problems because it can cause liver damage. Also patients with who has diabetes, cirrhosis and hypertension.
Avatar n tn There is a possibility of your medications causing liver damage - especially the pravastatin. A liver panel testing for AST, ALT, GGT, alkaline phosphatase and total bilirubin would be helpful to see if the enzymes are elevated - suggesting damage or inflammation. Irbesartan can also increase liver function tests as well. In addition to the liver function tests, I would also suggest an abdominal ultrasound, which can evaluate for liver disorders (i.e.
179856 tn?1333550962 690–695). Pfeffer et al, in the prospective pravastatin pooling project, observed that 0.5% of the patients who received 40 mg of pravastatin had ALT levels >5 times ULN and 0.2% had ALT levels >9 times ULN (Circulation 2002;105:2341–2346). Interestingly, during several statin trials, investigators observed similar incidence of increased liver enzymes in patients receiving placebo.
Avatar m tn Are those the drugs that can damage the liver though?
Avatar m tn "I think my arm bleeding from a needle prick was a sign of liver damage" What was your diagnosis? A liver biopsy can tell the cause of the liver disease so you don't have to guess what caused your cirrhosis. Of course you are in the age group of people that are most prone to being infected by hepatitis C. Was hepatitis ruled out?
Avatar m tn i have not started it because i have read it is one of the worse drugs for the liver and can damage the liver. also what about antibiotics affect on the liver? certain ones to avoid? can taking the heptapro you mentioned in an earlier thread along with a probiotic help if taken by themselves? perhaps add other things talked about little by little? i'm not much of a pill taker and would want to start out slow.
Avatar m tn I read a study like that also. But statins are killer-hard for your liver to take, so it's like one step forward, two steps back. I think they may be tried for folks with little or no damage, but those of us with beat-up broke-down livers may never get to try statins. The thought is very exciting tho, I'm trying to follow the idea myself.
Avatar n tn I was prescribed Pravastatin 40mg 15 years ago following a minor heart attack. For at least 5 years I was treated for Goat problems even though I was not having the usual swellings associated with the illness. During the past 3 or 4 years started with Cramp like problems both in my feet, ankles and legs which was getting progressively worse. I mentioned it to various GP's without help until about 3 or 4 months ago when finally one doctor asked "Was I on Statins?
Avatar m tn More serious side effects include muscle weakness, myopathy, nerve damage, liver damage and rhabdomyolysis – the breakdown of muscle tissue that can lead to potentially fatal kidney failure. Unfortunately, most doctors don’t know that there are natural alternative to statin drugs that are far safer and just as effective. So they take a different approach to this phenomenon.
Avatar f tn For instance, it has been determined that statins help increase liver function in individuals with liver disease. As result of recent studies, the FDA is preparing to remove the threat of liver damage from the list of side effects. Also, the study being referred to above is the ENHANCE study that did not find that the addition of Zetia made Zocor more effective. In fact, ENHANCE showed that the addition of Zetia to Simvastatin showed no additional benefit.
Avatar m tn Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have suspected that milk thistle can slow down or reduce the activity of enzymes in the liver. What does this have to do with HIV? you might ask. Well, enzymes in the liver break down many of the substances that we eat and drink, including medications. If the activity of these enzymes are reduced, then drugs remain in the blood longer than they otherwise might.

Avatar m tn I had major concerns initially when my husband was prescribed simvastatin (which he's been taking for over a year now), but all his docs (PCP, cardiologist, hepatologist, and surgeon) all concurred that it was a good (and in his case, a necessary) move. All the same, I have to admit I always had some lingering doubts with all the 'liver-damage' warnings we've all known about, especially because my husband has cirrhosis and active HCV. (This thread has done a lot to ease my mind!
Avatar m tn This complaint affected about 1 in 20 of the population in the trials, irrespective of therapy. Liver failure The estimated risk of liver failure of someone taking statins was 0.5 per 100,000 person years, or 1 in 200,000 per year. This is about the same as people not taking statins. Stroke Stroke was no more common in people taking statins as not, though the rate of haemorrhagic stroke may have been higher.
Avatar f tn AST (SGOT) and ALT (SGPT) are sensitive indicators of liver damage or injury from different types of disease. But it must be emphasized that higher-than-normal levels of these liver enzymes should not be automatically equated with liver disease. They may mean liver problems or they may not. For example, elevations of these enzymes can occur with muscle damage.
Avatar n tn I read recent studies that coffee actually helps with liver damage in regards to cirrhosis from alcohol consumption. Can I get some opinions about this???
1806721 tn?1510192923 Only one in 498 showed a POSSIBLE link to the development of Diabetes, it has not been proven. Also not mentioned, the FDA is eliminating the risk of liver damage from the list of side effects and that the link to Memory loss, confusion, high blood sugar, and type 2 diabetes are not proven, only an observation and NO LINK HAS BEEN PROVEN. This is typical anti statin rhetoric with only part of the data being given and the rest either ignored or taken out of context.

Avatar n tn html A Warning About Milk Thistle and Drug Interactions The seeds of the milk thistle plant are commonly used by some individuals in the hope of protecting the liver from damage caused by hepatitis viruses as well as alcohol and other substances. Compounds found in milk thistle -sylibin, sylimarin - act as antioxidants and also stimulate the repair of the liver. But now it appears that these and possibly other compounds in milk thistle can have other, potentially harmful effects.

Even Supplements can cause problems. When you are on ANY prescription medication, ask the Pharmacist if the supplements you are taking (if any) may cause problems.
Avatar n tn Some statins, of which I believe Lipitor is one, can cause serious irreversible damage to muscles and the leaflet accompanying the medication warns to stop taking them immediately if muscle pains are experienced.
Avatar f tn This phenomenon is more common in Southern Africa (where about 40% have minimal liver damage) than in Asia,America and Europe (where more than 90% are associated with cirrhosis). " Many causes have been suggested: a) integration of part of the hbv genome into the liver cell genome; b) HBV X protein promotes development of HCC 2. I believe antiviral treatment is appropriate. This is, I believe, to ensure virus replication is reduced, therefore no progression of fibrosis/cirrhosis.
Avatar n tn It is mainly caused as a result of obesity and alcohol intake. Fatty liver may cause no damage, but sometimes the excess fat leads to inflammation of the liver. An inflamed liver may become scarred and hardened over time. This condition, called cirrhosis, is serious and often leads to liver failure.
Avatar f tn I've used milk thistle, and Sho-Saiko-To, a Japanese hep c treatment...The milk thistle helps the liver to detoxify and slow damage, the SST actually knocks the hep c down and repairs the liver, but neither one get rid of it...Hep C damages more than your liver -it can attack and effect just about all your body weakens your immune system, causes memory loss, arthritis, nerve pain and some autoimmune problems...It can cause bile duct, diabetic/ pancreatic issues, and GI disturbances.
976897 tn?1379171202 It can carry a serious side affect and this is why our livers are watched closely, but it's my understanding that if liver damage presents then stopping the statins stops the damage. It doesn't say that everyone who takes a statin will have this. There are many factors to be considered when one has a heart attack. What happened to people years ago I feel is irrelevant pertaining to heart attacks.
Avatar f tn By any standard that is a very good safety record. In addition, the FDA has dropped potential liver damage from the list of side effects and even told the medical profession it is no longer recommended that doctors do follow up tests to check the liver function of those on statins. They did add a warning about TEMPORARY muscle pain and confusion to the list of side effects even though by their own statement they can not say that there is a direct tie to statin use, but it has been observed.

158241 tn?1237723123 I wouldn't overanalyze the situation. You are geno 3, you're thin and in great shape with probably minimal liver damage. So you have a much larger margin of likely tx success than us downtrodden geno 1's. And you have that high margin of likely success by simply playing by the numbers.
