Avatar n tn I was on 40mg of Pravastatin and now am on 80mg. Is my doc just being aggressive? Or is there another reason for the big increase? I welcome any speculations.
Avatar f tn Can someone explain what, if any, evidence there for a switch from simvastatin to pravastatin? My husband's doctor said there is new evidence that simvastatin may be detrimental. Unfortunately, my husband did not quiz him further. He already has one stent in a narrow back artery but he has brought his cholesterol down considerably with the statins.
1806721 tn?1554333407 4 months ago, I found out that my total cholesterol was 327 (HDL 64 LDL 210). I tried lifestyle change with 45 mins exercise everyday and a vegan/vegetarian diet. 1 month ago, my total cholesterol came down to 267 (HDL 50 LDL 191). My doctor has put me on generic pravastatin 20mg. A few days after I started the drug, I had a fever with flu-like symptom, and when that went away in a few days, I have been having hip/knee pains and fatigue that gets worse over the course of 2 weeks.
Avatar m tn my lipid test shows HDL 43.63 and LDL 37.47. Can LDL be LOWER than HDL? This makes a ratio of about 1.16 instead of the ideal of above 0.4. I have CAD and one stent. Should I be concerned?
Avatar m tn Total Chol about 120 or lower Triglycerides about 115 or lower HDL fairly steady at about 35. has always been low. Last monday TG rose to 204 and HDL dropped to 29. Total Chol was 115 and LDL direct was 55. My change was dropping lisinopril due to a couch and increasing Coreg from 3.125 mg 2x/d to 6.25 mg 2x/d this has shifted my cardiac disease risk in the wrong direction. Does it make sense that the lipid change is due to coreg dose this small?
Avatar n tn I now take my meds which are Tricor and Pravastatin. But in addition to those I take 500mg of Niacin in the morning and again in the evening. He needs to get that number down because I have had multiple heart attacks from the plaque in my blood. And that comes from the high levels of triglycerides in the blood. That is the fat that causes the plaque to form. The Niacin is a good supplement in treating this.

Avatar n tn Two recent trials have compared the clinical outcomes of intensive lipid lowering with atorvastatin 80 mg/day and standard lowering with pravastatin 40 mg/day. In the Pravastatin or Atorvastatin Evaluation and Infection Therapy (PROVE IT) trial, patients with acute coronary artery syndromes were enrolled, and pravastatin lowered the low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol to 2.46 mmol/l, whereas atorvastatin lowered it to 1.60 mmol/l.
Avatar n tn s the quality of the particles and not the count that matters. Many people with HDL counts as high as yours have HDL-3 particles that are very small and not as effective when binding to LDL. If it were me I would give pravastatin a chance, but if I had the same side effects and I could not live with them, I would try something like Zetia. You could also add a fenofibrate like Tricor to lower your TGLs as well, very safe and no side effects.
Avatar m tn BP is 120/68, resting pulse =55, total cholesterol 181 (40 mg of pravastatin nightly); HDL 55 (ratio is 3.3), Triglycerides - 79mg/dl, and ldl 110 mg/dl I ride my bike 3x/week about 75-100 miles/week. No family history with parents, but grandfather died in 1964 of heart attack at age 65 (most likely no medications on board for him). Had a stress test about 3 years ago that was uneventful. This weekend I went on a 110 mile ride - 2 days. First day 55 miles and slept in tent.
Avatar f tn Your doctor would not put you on it for low HDL (good cholesterol) as it does not increase HDL, it lowers LDL or bad cholesterol. Do you know what your breakdown was? In any case, statins are very safe and proving to me more safe all the time. The risk of any side effect is anywhere between 2% and 5% which classifies this as very safe. Common side effects are muscle pain and sore joints. I would take it and just keep an eye out for anything that may be a side effect.
Avatar n tn > Although it's unclear how, high triglycerides may contribute to hardening of the arteries I think that was a good point made by erijon - that the mechanism is not known looking at triglycerides is fairly recent, and might explain Tim Russert
720228 tn?1530911279 m wondering if you can ask your Dr about diet changes and exercise before starting the meds. Normal is below 200. Do you know what your other numbers were? LDL,HDL and triglycerides? Those are very important too.Sometimes making these changes can get your numbers down. They may have to be drastic though. Mainly fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, beans, things like that. No fast food at all. No junk food of any kind.

Avatar m tn m still trying to get a clarification. Anyway, the cardiologist put me on Amlodopine and Pravastatin. Now, on a daily basis it seems, my heart rate increases and beats at 90-115 bpm (normally in the mid 70s). At the same time, I've started on a vegetarian diet to try to lower my cholesterol. To try to make sure I get enough protein, I am using a protein drink (10-14 gr protein each). I drink 1-2 of these per day.
Avatar n tn I recently was prescripbed pravastatin and I notice a higher number when I test after a night of fasting in my Blood Glucose. Is there a posibility that could cause the rise.
Avatar m tn Is it safe to take Levothyroxine at the same time as Pravastatin? Also, 2 months ago, I started to take my Levothyroxine at bedtime instead of in the morning as it is more convenient. and after a recent bloodtest my GP has reduced my Thyroxine to 75mcg instead of 100mcg. Could taking it at bedtime be the reason for this reduction? I will obviously ask my GP about this on my next visit to the surgery but would be grateful for any advice.
1375932 tn?1279301132 I take an array of meds (Coreg, Nitro, Nitro-Quick, Pravastatin, Niacin, Fish Oil and Vit D and small dose Xanax. Lipids are good overall, but HDL could be higher and 1000 Slo-Niacin has not pushed down LP(a). Possibly adding Diltiazem and have recently read about Eplenerone which I understand suppresses cortisol/physiological stress response. I have breakthrough pain almost daily, particularly with emotion - I have always had an exaggerated physical stress response.
Avatar n tn My (74 year old) father currently is taking these medications together Pravastatin Sodium 80mg, Zetia 10 mg, Isosorbide Mnonitrate 30 mg, Metoprolol tartrate 50 mg, Plavix 75 mg, Amlodipine Besylate 10 mg, Aspirin (nsaid) 81 mg low dose The doctor told him his liver count is up 66 and the lower range is 64.
