Avatar n tn Both pretrty much the same thing. These are generics for Lipitor and Pravachol, both very affectve. Below are the results of a study that was recently done; "With so many statins available for clinical use in coronary artery syndromes, there has been much discussion about which is the best. Two recent trials have compared the clinical outcomes of intensive lipid lowering with atorvastatin 80 mg/day and standard lowering with pravastatin 40 mg/day.
Avatar f tn Welcome and thanks for your question. Both are statins that work by a similar process with Simvastatin being considered a stronger med. Below is a quote about a recent study; "There was a study done with 550 people in 1993, that looked at the differences in treatment with simvastatin versus pravastatin. Patients were put on a cholesterol-lowering diet and given one of the medications.
Avatar f tn Does anyone know if the medicine Pravastatin (for high cholesterol) can cause your sugar to go up? I had quit taking it for about 2 weeks and my sugar which is usually high came down to 90-120, when I started taking it again my sugar went back up to 180-230.
Avatar f tn I went to have my cholesterol checked after taking the pravastatin for 9 weeks. My total cholesterol dropped from 225 to 152, but what seriously concerns me is that my HDL dropped from 54 to 2 mg/dL!!! I just go the news last night and my doctor didn't seem overly concerned. He said I could go off the pravastatin and see how my numbers were with diet and exercise alone. I have been on a good routine with proper diet and regular exercise and I am at the low end of my healthy weight.
Avatar f tn I was put on Pravastatin about 9 weeks ago as my cholesterol had gone from 190 to 225 from the previous year. I have a family history of heart disease (my father passed away after a second heart attack at 53). I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 2 years ago and was placed on Levoxyl (75mg) and my levels have remained normal. I went to have my cholesterol checked after taking the pravastatin for 9 weeks.
1806721 tn?1554333407 Welcome and thanks for your question. Statins can cause muscle and joint pain as a side effects. It happens in approx 1 out of every 2,200 users so it's worth mentioning it to your doctor. Keep in mind that muscle and joint pain are the most common medical complaint and a symptom off many conditions so it could very likely not be related to your meds.
Avatar m tn m still trying to get a clarification. Anyway, the cardiologist put me on Amlodopine and Pravastatin. Now, on a daily basis it seems, my heart rate increases and beats at 90-115 bpm (normally in the mid 70s). At the same time, I've started on a vegetarian diet to try to lower my cholesterol. To try to make sure I get enough protein, I am using a protein drink (10-14 gr protein each). I drink 1-2 of these per day.
225237 tn?1333138999 I was recently prescribed this medication for cholesterol, doc said my good was low and bad was high. Does anyone know much about this medication? Side effects? Or things to expect while taking it? Thanks for any advice!!
179856 tn?1333547362 Ask your doctor about Zetia... It's not hamful to the liver like a statin drug. I also recommend another good book by Dr. Agatston called "South Beach Heart Progam." I just read it and am going to have several blood tests done to measure other indicators of heart disease. Shocking for me to read that having normal cholesterol levels doesn't mean your heart is healthy... Trust me after "surviving" tx, I want to make sure I'm as healthy as can be!
Avatar f tn However, for some patients, it may take up to 2 months for symptom resolution. If you are still having horrible pain, it may not be a good idea for you to restart statin, especially after 2 trials of different agents, unless the benefit outweighs the risk. Also, it is very important for you and your physician to determine if the myalgia is truly due to the statins. Please note: patients with hypothyroidism may also complaint of myalgia, independent of statins.
Avatar n tn does pravastatin na 40mg cause erection problems ? and what can be done to have an erection.
Avatar m tn It has been studied as noted by the excerpt from the NIH below. Avatar f tn In the VA-HIT study Gemfibrozil resulted in 6 % higher value of HDL cholesterol, 4 % lower for total cholesterol and 31% lower for the triglycerides compared with placebo. There were 134 confirmed strokes, 90%of which were ischemic. 76 occurred in the placebo group and 58 in the gemfibrozil group, for a relative risk reduction of 31%. This beneficial effect of increasing HDL , lowering triglycerides and total cholesterol was observed only with atherothrombotic type of stroke.
Avatar m tn This made me very happy and I continued to exercise and eat healthy. Recently I went back for a follow up and to have my cholesterol checked again. To my disappointment, my cholesterol went back up to 237 and my LDL is at 158.She seems to think it is genetic. I have occasional dizziness and weird feelings in my chest, sometimes in the center and sometimes in my heart's general location. I have had 3 EKG's and the cardiologist did a stress test with me on the treadmill.
Avatar n tn In early September, I was prescribed a statin for the first time, 40 mg of Pravastatin, to be taken at night. After 2 weeks, I started having muscle pain/weakness in my legs but for the first time in my life had very odd heart palpatations after lying down in bed for about 10 minutes when I was first trying to sleep. I stopped taking the Pravastatin after about 1 month.
3539331 tn?1347554407 i know this is for the doctor but i thought i would reply as i just went for a study. For the study i did, they made me go for ECG and blood work which came back fine. I had a heart monitor and it showed something so i was unable to do the study. I guess it depends on the study and drug but the place i went said for all studies you must be healthy, unless it is for a certain condition. I would find out what test they need to do to see if you qualify.
1688079 tn?1305854113 My guess is you had high blood pressure to go along with your high cholesterol levels which is why you are on the Pravastatin and a cadio healthy diet as well.
Avatar f tn Thank you. I'm on my third statin, Pravastatin, because I couldn't tolerate Lipitor or Crestor (severe muscle aches). I was allowed to stop statins entirely for a month, but had to go back on them as my cholesterol shot up, even though I'm careful with my diet and am exercising. I have a family history on both sides of very high cholesterol, and my doctor said you can't do anything about genetics. I will pick up some CoQ10 immediately.
1806721 tn?1554333407 I started taking Pravastatin 20mg/d since one month ago. It wakes me up every night at 3 or 4am with body aches. My doctor did a blood test and my liver/kidney is ok, so he wants me to try to stay on statin. My question is: Is there any danger to take Ambien together with Pravastatin? I really very desperately need to sleep through the night... Thanks so much for your help!
Avatar m tn I am on LISINOPRIL-HCTZ 20-25MG and BYSTOLIC for HBP I am also on PRAVASTATIN for Cholesterol. I recently had to stop the Bystolic because my heart rate was low between 45-62. Avatar f tn Hello I have been taking generic Crestor for about two years. It has dropped my LDL to 39-45 range and blood glucose ranges from 105-111 fasting. A1c 5.1 - 5.3. Prior to the statin I was below 100. I am not overweight, exercise consistently and eat very healthy. So the statin is the culprit. I am wondering if being stricter on carb intake and supplementing with Berberine will help? Or has anyone had better outcomes with other statins like livalo or pravastatin?
Avatar n tn Your HDL and TGLs look good, however your LDL or bad cholesterol is very high. The National Cholesterol Education Panel recommends an LDL of 130 or less in individuals with no additional risks for heart disease. You should discuss your numbers with your doctor as lifestyle changes alone may not be enough to lower your LDL by itself.

Avatar n tn total cholesterol = 487, and triglycerides were over 2000, about 10 years ago. I have a genetic condition that causes this. So, in spite of the risk of combining statins and fenofibrates, my GP placed me on both medicines, after consulting with his cardio doc friend. I can't remember how long I was on these medications, but I know that I had to stop statins in general, because my body just will not tolerate them. I continued to take Tricor for quite some time.
