Pravachol statin

Common Questions and Answers about Pravachol statin

pravachol

Avatar n tn never came back), resurgence of the peripheral neuropathy which I first got years ago from a year on Pravachol (statin) all the way up to my knees, worsening of my lung disease (which I discovered started with the Pravachol, stopped when I was off statins, and grew again when I went back on) AND wildly erratic heartbeats and tachycardia (all the way up to 140 beats per minute).
Avatar n tn I was on medication in and out as I develop side effects to the statin drugs. I was on Lipitor, then on Pravachol and lastly on Crestor. None of them had problems loweting the Choesterol levels, but muscle and joint pain even with Vit D and Co Q10 as prescribed my physician. However, I came off crestor yesterday as I started feeling Dizzy. I am normally a "healthy", active energetic person. Now my doc thinks we should try Zetia which is in a different family of drugs.
Avatar n tn Brand name and generic versions of statin drugs must carry these warnings on their labels, the FDA today announced. The products include: Lipitor (atorvastatin), Lescol (fluvastatin), Mevacor (lovastatin), Altoprev (lovastatin extended-release), Livalo (pitavastatin), Pravachol (pravastatin), Crestor (rosuvastatin), and Zocor (simvastatin).
Avatar n tn t find the right medicine...Lipitor caused severe muscle weakness, Zetia caused all kind of digestive problems and Pravachol zapped my energy...my count actually went up 30 points while taking WelChol! My doctor is telling me that I have no other choices of medicine to lower my count (total 285, HDL 106 VLDL 21, LDL 188, Triglycerids 106.) My sister is having the same problem so I guess this problem is a family thing. I am really troubled by my doctor's lack of concern.
Avatar m tn I do have in my family some cases of high cholesterol, all temporary and diagnosed as stress related cases. Her daily diet did not changed, she eats well (meat without fat, vegetables, fruits) as I said, she is very active(she plays all day). The only difference about her is that she has swollen eyes when she wakes up or after crying(more then normal). Doctors said that is not a symptom and that she is in good health. The same doctors were wrong before so...
Avatar n tn My understanding is that the statins with the greatest LDL reducing effect are Crestor, Lipitor, Zocor, and Pravachol, in that order. I don’t mention Leschol and Mevacor since they appear to be rarely used since recently due to the aforementioned being more powerful. Do we have any available solid data on the effects of the various individual statins other than LDL reduction? For example, do we know which ones raise HDL the most? What about effects on particle size or Lp(a), etc.
Avatar m tn A doctor put me on a statin as a preventative measure back in the late 1980's. Now, too late, I find that this cursed me with a fatal lung disease (Pulmonary Fibrosis), a dangerous nerve disease (peripheral neuropathy) and I am sorry I took the stuff as long as I did (about two years: I quit because it cost too much and I didn't see why I needed it).
Avatar m tn Niacin can do wonders on the LDL especially when there may be a corkscrew like protein attached to it and no amount of statin, diet or lifestyle change will impact the LDL but Niacin will. It is referred to as LPa and can be done in some advanced lipid testing. That alone may change and further define what you need to be on. Also, did you take the statin at night and to reduce the side effects of it, take a smaller daily dose of CQ10 with it at night?
1806721 tn?1554333407 I tried very hard with diet change and exercise, and took 20mg Pravachol per day. After 6 months, it was down to 170-180. And that was about the best numbers I could get to back then. A year ago, I started feeling ill. I stopped statin and exercise. Yet a few months after I stopped the statin, I found out in surprise that my LDL was further dropped to 150-160 rather than bouncing back up. Two months after that lipid panel, I was diagnosed with rectal cancer.
1806721 tn?1554333407 Cr are also low. WBC still low and cholesterol still high. Currently taking Pravachol. No matter what I eat and how much I exercise, I cannot seem to control the symptoms of fatigue and massive body aches. Does this still look like hypothyroidism?
Avatar n tn I had long qt as part of statin rebound; in fact, the weird pulse -including tachycardia - scared me half out of my wits especially since I had never had anything like that before. The ER docs said I had long qt and ventricular fibrillation plus RBBB and bradycardia, none of which I had before my year on Simvastatin. Also, severe nocturnal leg cramps and a severe ramping-ing up of the peripheral neuropathy which hit years ago with a year on Pravachol, but it was the heart stuff that spooked me.
1463256 tn?1286028981 Again, these could be statin damage. Most doctors seem to think statin side effects are due to something else so they do not report them, and because they do not report them as side effects they do not see them on any side effect list.
Avatar n tn does muscle problems from taking the generic pravachol include a burning feeling in the knees which causes pain when walking or bending knees?
Avatar f tn My doctor insists my cholesterols is dangerously high and prescribed Pravachol. Within two days the symptoms have returned. I now believe my RLS was in fact an early reaction to Lipitor and that my back and neck pain, etc. are an indication of increasing toxicity from statins. Is this an accurate assessment? I need to know what my next steps are. I can't tolerate taking statins any longer.
Avatar f tn I am going to try taking that Co Q10 that everybody keeps talking about. I have since stopped the s-statin drug, against my Dr's orders and REFUSE TO TAKE IT! I am going to do this the natural way - diet and exercise. Has anybody else had symptoms like this and did the CoQ10 work? Did any other cholesterol med work without the side effects???? This discussion is related to Tired/weak legs all the time but no loss of strength.
Avatar f tn Simvastatin is a simple statin and is very safe. Your doctor would not put you on it for low HDL (good cholesterol) as it does not increase HDL, it lowers LDL or bad cholesterol. Do you know what your breakdown was? In any case, statins are very safe and proving to me more safe all the time. The risk of any side effect is anywhere between 2% and 5% which classifies this as very safe. Common side effects are muscle pain and sore joints.
1583640 tn?1296674030 Valid for credit through 12/01/2011 December 1, 2010 — A post hoc analysis of the Greek Atorvastatin and Coronary Heart Disease Evaluation (GREACE) study suggests that physicians should not let mildly to moderately abnormal liver test results stop them from using a statin in patients with coronary heart disease [1]. Statin therapy is not only safe in these patients, report investigators, but it significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular events and improves liver-function tests.
Avatar n tn I had lots of blood tests and lots of things were ruled out. Pravachol was doubled to 80 mg and I was seeing the doctor about every 6 months. The doctor is a hepatologist at a university hospital in Chicago. In December my liver enzymes skyrocketed due to taking a Zpak, antibiotic. I ended up in the ER and developed jaundice. My AST was 196, ALT 289 and Alk. Phos. was 408. A couple of weeks later I had an US, it showed fatty infiltration, and my liver and spleen are enlarged.
Avatar m tn No other symptoms what so ever. Find it hard to loose weight even I try, take toprol and pravachol, was on Z-pack for strep throat when CT was done. Someone?
Avatar f tn My psychiatrist has me on Lamictal, Effexor, Neurontin, Wellbutrin, and Nuvigil. From my PCP I take Pravachol and Lisinopril. Is it safe to take all these together? All answers are appreciated.
Avatar n tn My blood preasure has been high since before I found out I was a diabetic. He also has me on pravachol. My cholestrol was high before I was told I was a diabetic. It has read the same since I have been on this drug. Would it be wiser to change either of the drugs or to add plavix? I have been on pravachol for at least 6 years and diabetic only two. Another area I have noticed in your forum, is the effect of caffine on blood sugars.
Avatar n tn I take prevacid for heartburn and pravachol for high cholesterol; also using mupirocin ointment since I had sinus surgery in September.
255163 tn?1376869746 Should I be on a statin. I have a des 4 yrs. Taking plavix aspirin, atenolol, simvastatin. My primary wants to take me off the statin. My chol is about 156, ldl 45, hdl 95 ,tri under 60.And I am diabetic. Last a1c 6.3. Is it safe to go off the statin.
Avatar f tn It has dropped my LDL to 39-45 range and blood glucose ranges from 105-111 fasting. A1c 5.1 - 5.3. Prior to the statin I was below 100. I am not overweight, exercise consistently and eat very healthy. So the statin is the culprit. I am wondering if being stricter on carb intake and supplementing with Berberine will help? Or has anyone had better outcomes with other statins like livalo or pravastatin?
Avatar n tn Are you sure the statin is the cause of the gout? If so then Doctor should recommend change in statin....there are many out there to choose from.
