Avatar f tn It could also occur due to other causes like tumors or pulmonary embolism. As the primary cause namely the pneumonia resolves, the sputum production and hemoptysis should resolve. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar m tn i was also never given a firm diagnosis. it began as an involuntary cough which produced thick sputum which varied between yellow and green, it progressed slowly and was not accompanied by fever. as it worsened i woke nightly from coughing, generally 3-4 times per night. the sputum from the lungs was never bloody. the cough was slightly painful, i never felt any sharp pains or rattling in my lungs. at 3 weeks i had a (clear) chest xray. after approx.
Avatar m tn It just makes sense to culture via a sputum culture if he is able to cooperate and give a good sample. A sputum induction is also an easy, non invasive way to get a sample. He would simply have to nebulize hypertonic saline, hopefully that would induce enough sputum for a good sample. I am no doctor though....maybe the pulmonologist has his reasons for not doing this. And you are right regarding PCP.....it is sensitive to certain antibiotics. Bactrim is especially good for treating PCP.

Avatar n tn I just wanted to update this...spoke to my docs office this morning, they forgot to call but she had put a note in my chart about it. She said following pneumonia this is normal and can occur for several weeks after. As long as I am not having any worsening symptoms and am showing improvement, even if it is slow, that this is normal. If I have a fever or any change or worsening in symptoms I should go in to see her immediately. So I am relieved.

Avatar n tn There could be two possibilities for chest pain, shortness of breath and infection. They are thromboembolism and pneumonia. Do you have any fever, cough with sputum? If yes then it could be pneumonia. An X-ray chest would help in making diagnosis. As already you are prone to embolism, pulmonary embolism could also be the cause for your present symptoms. Burning pain in the legs could be due to thrombophlebitis.

1982709 tn?1326384405 What tests did your doctor order? Did you have a chest X-ray? Was a sputum sample taken and either looked at under a microscope or sent to a lab for culture? I somehow got the impression that nothing much was done in the way of tests and he sort of magically arrived at a diagnosis of chronic bronchitis without any eveidence. That is why I asked if this visit with the difficulty breathing was your first time to experience this.
Avatar n tn ” “The most typical symptom is a chronic cough that produces thick, white or green sputum (discharge). The sputum may be foul-smelling and abundant and may contain blood. The individual generally coughs up large amounts of sputum after changing position (for example, after rising from bed). The patient may have recurrent pneumonia, weight loss, and anemia. Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with pneumonia 6 weeks ago. I was on oral antibiotics for 2 days, then admitted with an IV drip for 3 days (levifloxacin, as I'm allergic to penicillin-based drugs) then given a 5 day course of oral clarithromyacin. I rested for 2 more weeks after finishing the antibiotics but was still coughing yellow mucus and feeling tired with moderate/mild activity.

Avatar n tn “The differential diagnosis for patients who present with abnormalities on chest x-ray includes lung cancer, as well as nonmalignant diseases. These include infectious causes such as tuberculosis or pneumonia, or inflammatory conditions such as sarcoidosis. These diseases can result in mediastinal lymphadenopathy or lung nodules, and sometimes mimic lung cancers.” The finding has to be corelated with the symptoms and history of exposure smoking, mining, asbestos, tin, aluminium dust etc.
Avatar n tn t have any previous disease record (except for pneumonia when I was 6) or surgery history (except for wisdom teeth removal in August under local anesthesia).
