Plavix with surgery

Common Questions and Answers about Plavix with surgery

plavix

255163 tn?1376869746 t really understand the doc not wanting to do the surgery. I had bypass surgery and got 2 stents installed while on Plavix with no problems at all. I think the risk is controlling the bleeding, but it must not really be that big a problem. Gall bladder removal is not the big deal it used to be. One lady I know had it done and just spent one night in the shop--almost like an outpatient surgery--and she was on Plavix. I think they had her not take it just for a day or two before the surgery.
Avatar m tn I am not aware of any new studies, but it has been the general consenus of the medical community for dual therapy (aspirin and plavix) up to about a year with drug eluding stents. A DES has some probability to cause restenosis up to about a year, after that period of time the probility decreases. Seven years ago I had a DES implant and was on dual therapy for a year and discontinued. However, I have read some doctors chose to dual therapy if there has been a prior heart attack!?
255163 tn?1376869746 later he was taken off plavix for surgery. He got thru the surgery just fine, but suffered a major heart attack in the recovery room, and after 3 months while in the hospital died of another major heart attack.
Avatar m tn What is the possibility of having surgery? If I have surgery is the Plavix stopped for a number of days and then resumed?
Avatar m tn Last time I went off plavix for 2 days I had my 2nd heartattack so I CAN NOT GO OFF OF IT..I hac surgery to remove a salivary gland and had to stay overnight for obsevation and everything turned out all right.. Is there anyway to remove these polops while on Plavix ?
Avatar m tn I had indeed bleeding issues spent a long, long time in the hospital. Recently I had to have a foot surgery and was taken off Plavix a week before the surgery, but was advised to stay on 81mg aspirin as I have significant heart trouble. With just the aspirin, I had to wear an ankle cuff during the foot surgery to suppress the bleeding.
Avatar f tn I have noticed no real problems on plavix. I think the only problem comes if you require further surgery. Stenting is fine with plavix, they gave me 600mg before my last angioplasty.
Avatar n tn After that length of time it is generally believed to discontinue plavix but remain on aspirin. Although plavix and aspirin are anti-platelet agents, plavix has a different mechanism of action that seems to be specialized for drug eluding stent to prevent restenosis. Laviquin is an antibiotic medication! and there is a class-action suit against Laviqiin providers that is currently unresolved.
214864 tn?1229715239 Have any of you continued plavix through minor surgery like gallbladder surgery (the keyhole type)? The last time I stopped Plavix after an 8 month old DES, I had a blockage or re-stenosis to form in my LAD 3 months later. I stopped Plavix for sinus surgery where 2 tumors, that apparently my ENT thought could be malignant, were removed. My cardiologist said that it was more important to have the surgery than to continue Plavix, uninterrupted.
Avatar n tn The idea of anticoagulants is to lower the risk of stroke/heart attack. These are also very much risk factors with bypass surgery, indeed, with any surgery. If you are afraid of uncontrollable bleeding, simply request an INR test to see what your clotting factor is. They will then be able to advise you. The internet tends to produce problem cases over successful ones, which is why my Cardio warns me not to accept too much of it. It's like the media, no news is good news.
Avatar m tn You really need to discuss this with your cardiologist. Do not stop taking Plavix without his approval! Normally, Plavix is taken for the duration of 1 year after placing of a stent. I do not know why you are still taking it, but your cardiologist must have a good reason for it. Stopping Plavix too early increases the risk of an in-stent-thrombosis.
Avatar f tn There are big risks when one takes Plavix if you need emergency surgery or have an accident involving bleeding. I experienced an unexpected condition that required immediate surgery two years ago when taking Plavix (double bowel obstruction), and I had to have transfusions during the surgery. Hopefully, you work out or walk or do some form of exercise.
Avatar n tn My neurosurgeon says I need to go off Plavix for 6 weeks prior to surgery. I am very concerned about going off Plavix since past thrombosis and nearly dying. Can someone tell me the risk percentages for thrombosis if you had it prior. My wife would like for me to hold off of surgery until absolutely necessary or they come up with more info on Plavix. Thank you for your help.
Avatar n tn I forgot to mention, when I had my bypass surgery, I was not given plavix at all. I was only taking aspirin then.
976897 tn?1379167602 Just to complicate the Plavix/generic Plavix issue, I was told to stop taking Plavix after bypass surgery, and the bruising immediately became a bigger issue and remains a bigger problem today. I'm not sure the bruising/bleeding issue is completely understood. I still take 80mg aspirin, and wonder if that is the cause. pippi331, sometimes one is allergic to the filler with generic drugs. I'd sure report your situation as soon as possible.
Avatar n tn When I started getting blockages, they came regular intervals over a three year period, and have eight of them, along with several heart attacks. As a result, I took Plavix for four years, along with 81mg of aspirin. I didn't like taking Plavix because of the bruising side effect, but felt it was the best thing to do. I always worried about a car wreck, unexpected surgery, etc.
Avatar f tn I have no idea why you had to come off plavix for 10 days pre-surgery. My Cardiologist tells me just 24 hours is necessary because Plavix only has a half life of around 6 hours. So a 75mg daily dose would mean 38mg after 6 hours, 19mg after 12 hours and obviously just 4-5mg after 24 hours which is very low. In fact I had 2 teeth pulled on Monday this week and stopped my Plavix Sunday morning in preparation. My bleeding stopped very quickly and I was back on plavix 3 hours after.
Avatar m tn I am taking plavix for 10 years for a long history with heart problems. Stent, heart attack etc.. I am wondering how long a person should be on this.
Avatar n tn Some doctors recommend 1 to 2 years on Plavix with coated stents. Other doctors recommend being on Plavix for the rest of the persons life. It is extremely important that you stay on Plavix for as long as your doctor recommends. Going off of Plavix could mean a blood clot with a severe heart attack. You will need to talk to your doctor to find out how urgent it is to have the skin cancers removed and cataract done. Replacing the 2 wire pacemaker with the 3 wire pacemaker is a surgery.
Avatar m tn My cardiologist put me on Plavix plus the two aspirin and had me take 4 plavix the first day I got them. Now I take one Plavix a day plus the two aspirin. After a bout with Pneumonia and Bronchitis and being in the hospital twice I was sent to a Pulmonary Dr. He said first off I should be on Coumadin because I was high risk for blood clots and they don't know where they are coming from. He told me the Plavix was not the medicine of choice with my condition.
Avatar f tn Our 6 year old son has Tricuspid Artesia with HRHS and is 3 years post Fontan completion. Four months ago his fenustration was closed via Cath. During the Cath, a collateral was found and was unable to be coiled. It was accidentally directed a bit during the attempt. The SVC attachment area was angioplastied due to narrowing. Our son was placed on Plavix for an expected six month time frame. One week after the Cath, our son began getting severe headaches with vomiting. CT scans were clear.
Avatar m tn After informing my Cardiologist, he said okay, in fact he said it has been 4 years with no problems, so just stay off the Plavix permanently...After reading so many horror stories, I am concerned...I have been on Plavix for 4 years along with an 81 Mg aspirin. I think I will continue the aspirin...but this is day 3 and no problems thus far.. This discussion is related to Plavix dosing following drug eluting stents.
Avatar m tn While still taking Plavix, I had the misfortune of developing a bowel obstruction which required emergency surgery. The fact that I was was taking Plavix was a major concern, and the surgery took place expecting bleeding problems. Some bleeding did take place but they were prepared for it and I got through it OK. As Kenkeith suggests, when I had planned medical procedures when taking Plavix, I just quit taking it a week ahead of the planned procedures.
1210142 tn?1266077031 I totally agree with Ed. Like Ed, I have about 10 stents, I've quit counting, also had bypass heart surgery, and also have a pacemaker. One year after my bypass surgery, I was feeling wonderful, exercising at age 72 with weights and cardio, and insisted I quit Plavix. Within six months, my bypass veins failed because of blood clots, and I went into CHF in a New York Minute. I stayed on 325 aspirin, but was tired of the bruising and other inconveniences of Plavix.
Avatar n tn Plavix/clopidogrel is mainly an anti-platelet drug (they are *usually* used artery-side, e.g., to prevent strokes or heart attacks). The other drugs mentioned are anticoagulants (which interfere with coagulant proteins such as Factor Xa -- they are usually used venous-side, e.g., preventing DVT after orthopedic surgery). Either type might be used for the in between, which is the heart: for AFib clotting/strokes. I don't know why your doc preferred to prescribe Plavix for DVT.
