Several weeks ago, the cardiologist took me off of Coumadin and added two 81-mg, aspirin and recommended that I stay on the Plavix for the biopsy. The radiologist's office contacted the cardiologist and they agreed I could go off Plavix for seven days prior to the biopsy. At this point, I am more concerned about a blood clot in my stents than breast cancer. Is it safe for me to discontinue Plavix?

My boyfriend just had his second stent in the last month put in and they told him that he would be on Plavix for a year but he would be on Aspirin from now on. I guess it just depends on how bad the blockages are his were 90% blocked both times. After the did the first stent they told us it would only be a month on Plavix but after the last episode they decided that he needed to be on it for a year. He is also taking 2 blood pressure pills, Coreg, and Zocor.

I am asking for a friend. Is there an alternative drug to cumadin, for example, plavix?

I also wonder about the need for procedures like colonoscopy or other such procedures where the Plavix may cause a concern. Any thoughts?

Hi Linda, The lupus anticoagulants usually interfere with blood clotting and are also factors for thrombosis. Patients with a lupus anticoagulant are prone to excess bleeding, repeated miscarriages, thrombosis and strokes. Patients with a lupus anticoagulant that presents atleast twice and a history of thrombosis should be given indefinite treatment with anticoagulants. Thrombosis can be prevented with heparin administration and treated with heparin and warfarin.

The Gastric Bypass requires me to be off of Plavix for 7-14 days. My cardiologist is opposed to discontinuation of platelet therapy for a short time in order to have a proceddure. I want to know why it is recommended to remain on plavix for a minimum of 12 months after the stent? Does the risk of thormbosis decrease so significantly at 12 months that it is worth the risk of another Major Cardiac Event?

Should a 59 years old male with severe CAD, Renal Insufficiency (has been on dialysis for 1 1/2 years), had cuadriple heart bypass four years ago and is getting a stent today for coronary obstruction and has been on Coumadin for several years, will have to add Plavix to his treatment or is Coumadin enough for anticoagulation and antiplatelet effect?

Are you on any acid reflux meds or anti depressants. It was recently reported that the PPIs for reflux inhibits the plavix from working. Same for SSRI anti depressants. I also would like to know what kind of blood test was given showing the plavix is not working. I didn't think there was such a test.

My husband has been taking Plavix for 6 years and has recently been diagnosed with MDS Leukemia. I feel there may be a connection. Anyone else find this may be happening to them?

It wasn't normal in 2007, but is becoming more common now to be put on plavix for life. It was generally believed that there is no benefit from plavix after a year, but evidence is mounting that shows clots can form quite rapidly if taken off this medication after that time. I'm not sure about 2xplavix pills a day, but I take an aspirin and a plavix, 75mg of each.

Another patient in the same cardiac rehab class was the same - Plavix for 3 months, and yet another is still taking Plavix and has been told to continue taking it. The whole idea of plavix is to make platelets less active and a patient is now generally on this medication for a number of years. My first stent in 2007 required plavix for 1 year. My new stents in Sept 09 require plavix for 2-3 years minimum. They seem to now believe the longer you are on plavix the better, to prevent clogging of stents. They should be taking blood tests to make sure her clotting factor is as required. I assume she is on aspirin daily also?

My cardiologist would not let my dentist allow me to stop taking Plavix for even 5 days to alleviate my pain due to a cavity .The dentist is bent upon my discontinuing Plavix to enable filling of the cavity or do root canal to solve the problem.

the first time I went off Plavix on was on it for 8 months.. I went off for 2 days because I was supposed to have surgery on my salivary glands. My Cardio wants me on the plavix indefintely, so will not give me the ok to stop the plavix for 10 days and the Surgeon will not do the procedure with me on the plavix. I'm in a no win situation. I am taking plavix for 10 years for a long history with heart problems. Stent,heart attack etc.. I am wondering how long a person should be on this.

My father does not have any current heart condition, but felt a twinge and was going to go in for a test. In preparation for the test, or just as a precaution, he was put on Plavix even though he was on aspirin therapy. He does not have high blood pressure and is diabetic. Before the test could be performed, he had a massive gastrointestinal bleed. After a week in the hospital, and many blood transfusions, he is home recovering.

This risk or any risk associated with plavix needs to be evaluated for excessive bleeding, etc. (for some individuals that is a serious consideration) vs. a risk for an MI. Apparently, OP experiences other problems believed to be associated with plavix and that should also be a consideration for him. I discontinued plavix after a year or so and my wallet is happy.

Two friends of mine are studying to be Pharmacists and they have been told for example that Plavix has very little effect, or none at all, on the female Gender. Nobody knows why.
