Common Questions and Answers about Plavix bleeding time

plavix

Avatar n tn I think you need to show your Doctor, and certainly nobody here will tell you to stop taking any medication against your Doctors wishes. You could speak with your Doctor and ask if either Aspirin or Plavix can be stopped, but definitely one must be taken for life. Each time I've taken Plavix, I've been told to stop after 1 year to 18 months because there is no evidence to support benefits after that time.

315318 tn?1353251800 Effient, however, comes with greater chance of bleeding and it is expensive. If like Plavix, I have to take Effient for life then I guess, unlike Plavix, I will be paying a lot of out of pocket expense for a long time to come ! Avatar n tn Some surgeons request that a patient not be on plavix or warfarin at the time of surgery in order to minimize the risk of bleeding. Traditionally, the effects of plavix on platelets is minimal after 5 days. Usually, blood clots normally about three days after taking warfarin. This is quite variable and can be confirmed by a blood test (either checking INR or prothrombin time), prior to surgery.
Avatar f tn It's normal to bleed for awhile after a hysterectomy but 12 days is a little longer than usual. I think the Plavix may have something to do with it. You need to see your Dr to find out what's going on. Let us know and take care.
Avatar m tn Because of my Plavix and aspirin use, I had to be loaded with platlets and a cardiologist had to be present during the surgery. I had indeed bleeding issues spent a long, long time in the hospital. Recently I had to have a foot surgery and was taken off Plavix a week before the surgery, but was advised to stay on 81mg aspirin as I have significant heart trouble. With just the aspirin, I had to wear an ankle cuff during the foot surgery to suppress the bleeding.
Avatar m tn What about plavix. My husband is on it and is experiencing internal bleeding and subsequent drop in hemoglobin count to 10. we are concerned about staying on plavix as the physicians have been unable to determine source of bleeding.
Avatar n tn First stent and the second time, I developed allergic reaction to Plavix, second time with Ticlid, had 2 small seisures, tried Plavix again with Benadryl, this time developed intercranial bleeding. Angina symptoms have reoccured, but cardiologists will not tell me what I can do if I cannot take blood thinners (I have allergic reactions or bad reactions to almost all meds). I'm just told, "We'll cross that bridge when we get there.
Avatar n tn My husband is 64 had 5 bipass surgery in 2002. we moved to new hampshire 2 years ago & his caardiologist wants to stop his plavix... He has been told the risk is too high for bleeding. 8 years on, is this good?
Avatar n tn Coated aspirin is usually recommended for someone who may have bleeding problem, if at all. Plavix is contraindicated for someone with a bleeding history, and the probability is high the bleeding episode is the result of the medication. Plavix and aspirin a recommended dual therapy for someone who has a drug eluding stent implant for a duration of a year or so. There is some evidence the therapy reduces restenosis...
Avatar f tn It seems logical the risk of bleeding is greater than the benefit against the probability of a blood clot in your condition based on your health history of bleeding, and plavix should be avoided. There are substitutes for plavix, but the ani-platelet component remains with all substitutes. You may want to get a second opinion because there are serious implications.
Avatar n tn Will long term use of Plavix cause internal bleeding? This discussion is related to Long Term Plavix Side Effects?.
Avatar m tn t know what the new iinterest in plavix if any, I read sometime ago, it is recommended for a life time for heart patients. Then plavix with aspirin for dual therapy of DES for a year, Then more than a year for DES implants. I believe one can find any information they may want to hear about plavix as a medication. Aspirin from what I read recently is 81 mg, that is what I take. Personally, I wouldn't take a heavy dose of anti-platelets.
Avatar m tn Lately, there have many posts related to the duration of plavix and it seems patients are given plavix for a long period of time. It has been my understanding from what I have read and my experience, plavix is recommended for individuals that have a drug eluding stent to help prevent clots for up to a year. That has been my experience. DES when compared to bare metal stent implants have an increase of clots and restenosis for a period of one year...
Avatar m tn They held the scheduled Plavix dose and planned for some extra bleeding with blood plasma. I indeed had some extra bleeding but they were ready for it. As long as all the doctors are on the same page, I'd precede with confidence. Also, I know most hernia surgeries are done using laproscopic surgery, which is minimally invasive and causes much less bleeding than surgery requiring big scalpel cuts.

Avatar m tn I am currently taking plavix, 81mg aspirin AND coumadin on a daily basis. I had a stent put in in July 2008 and triple by pass in 2006. I'm 64 and had my first MI at 33. My father died of an MI at 46, my EF is under 30%. My EP (at one hospital) just suggested I eliminate the plavix while my CHF specialist (at a nearby major research university) said I would be on plavix for a "long time" (forever?).
Avatar m tn You probably should have been off plavix a year or so ago. I quite plavix after a year subsequent to a stent implant. Did not require weaning off, etc.
Avatar m tn The fact that I was was taking Plavix was a major concern, and the surgery took place expecting bleeding problems. Some bleeding did take place but they were prepared for it and I got through it OK. As Kenkeith suggests, when I had planned medical procedures when taking Plavix, I just quit taking it a week ahead of the planned procedures.
Avatar m tn I had a colonoscopy this morning for diagnostic reasons and I am full of polops, but they couldnt take any out while I am on Plavix...Last time I went off plavix for 2 days I had my 2nd heartattack so I CAN NOT GO OFF OF IT..I hac surgery to remove a salivary gland and had to stay overnight for obsevation and everything turned out all right.. Avatar n tn Tell the dentist you take Plavix. If it's a problem with the procedure, he/she will tell you, but I wouldn't quit taking it with talking first to your heart doc.
Avatar f tn I walk around with purple marks on my arms all the time. All I have to do is brush against something and I either start bleeding or I am left with a bruise.
