Plavix before surgery

Common Questions and Answers about Plavix before surgery

plavix

255163 tn?1376869746 My heart Dr will not let me go off the plavix and my surgeon will not do the surgery while on plavix. What happens in a situation like this?. I am between a rock and a hard place. If neither Dr gives in what do I do? If I have an attack and end up in the ER wouldn't they have to do emergency sugery?. Does this mean that anyone on plavix can never have surgery unless it's an ermergency. What is your opinion on going off plavix temporarily for surgery. I would welcome anyones advice.
Avatar n tn ve been told to stop Plavix 1 to 2 weeks before surgery
Avatar m tn Last time I went off plavix for 2 days I had my 2nd heartattack so I CAN NOT GO OFF OF IT..I hac surgery to remove a salivary gland and had to stay overnight for obsevation and everything turned out all right.. Is there anyway to remove these polops while on Plavix ?
Avatar f tn I have noticed no real problems on plavix. I think the only problem comes if you require further surgery. Stenting is fine with plavix, they gave me 600mg before my last angioplasty.
Avatar f tn We were told that he needs bypass surgery and it has been scheduled for March 11. The doctor said he needs to stop plavix 7 days before. I'm worried because he just will have had the stent put in at just over 3 weeks.
Avatar n tn I am taking Plavix and 2-81mg aspirin daily. My cardiologist told me before the stent was put in that i should have my 2-wire pacemaker replaced with a 3-wire pacemaker. So I began making arrangements for this procedure. Now my Cardiologist tells me that I have to wait another 5 months to do this because I don't dare stop the Plavix and aspirin. And that I cannot have any kind of invasive surgery during the 1st 6 months. I just learned this a month after the stent was put in.
Avatar m tn Weve had to call surgeons from other disciplines before and give them the business.. Because not taking plavix can kill you. Your liposuction wont mean squat if youre in the grave. They need to contact your cardiologist and discuss the risks either way and negotiate a strategy that they feel will do the most benefit for you. Either the surgeon will have to deal with it, and be prepared to transfuse if necessary..
Avatar m tn I had indeed bleeding issues spent a long, long time in the hospital. Recently I had to have a foot surgery and was taken off Plavix a week before the surgery, but was advised to stay on 81mg aspirin as I have significant heart trouble. With just the aspirin, I had to wear an ankle cuff during the foot surgery to suppress the bleeding.
Avatar f tn I have no idea why you had to come off plavix for 10 days pre-surgery. My Cardiologist tells me just 24 hours is necessary because Plavix only has a half life of around 6 hours. So a 75mg daily dose would mean 38mg after 6 hours, 19mg after 12 hours and obviously just 4-5mg after 24 hours which is very low. In fact I had 2 teeth pulled on Monday this week and stopped my Plavix Sunday morning in preparation. My bleeding stopped very quickly and I was back on plavix 3 hours after.
Avatar f tn There are big risks when one takes Plavix if you need emergency surgery or have an accident involving bleeding. I experienced an unexpected condition that required immediate surgery two years ago when taking Plavix (double bowel obstruction), and I had to have transfusions during the surgery. Hopefully, you work out or walk or do some form of exercise.
Avatar m tn What is the possibility of having surgery? If I have surgery is the Plavix stopped for a number of days and then resumed?
Avatar n tn Jan. 06 I was scheduled for hip replacement surgery, before I was to be cleared I had to have a stress test...The doctors found a blood flow problem and found I had 4 blockages...I had 3 medicated stents put in and the fourth was 100% blocked, doctors were not overly concerned as they have noted that in prior cases the artery where that blockage is have branched off and created a new entrance to the heart...Here I am 2 years later, still needing hip replacement...
Avatar m tn In getting ready for sius surgery in 2008 I was taken off my aspirin for 8 days and the day before the surgery had the second stroke. My cardiologist put me on Plavix plus the two aspirin and had me take 4 plavix the first day I got them. Now I take one Plavix a day plus the two aspirin. After a bout with Pneumonia and Bronchitis and being in the hospital twice I was sent to a Pulmonary Dr.
Avatar n tn My neurosurgeon says I need to go off Plavix for 6 weeks prior to surgery. I am very concerned about going off Plavix since past thrombosis and nearly dying. Can someone tell me the risk percentages for thrombosis if you had it prior. My wife would like for me to hold off of surgery until absolutely necessary or they come up with more info on Plavix. Thank you for your help.
Avatar n tn After that length of time it is generally believed to discontinue plavix but remain on aspirin. Although plavix and aspirin are anti-platelet agents, plavix has a different mechanism of action that seems to be specialized for drug eluding stent to prevent restenosis. Laviquin is an antibiotic medication! and there is a class-action suit against Laviqiin providers that is currently unresolved.
Avatar m tn I watched an online surgery video recording where a patient had stents inserted. The cardiologists then took questions from an audience of doctors and the public. One question posed was "does plavix have to be stopped for dental surgery". The reply was "no, plavix has actually been shown not to produce uncontrollable bleeding and even a tooth extraction is very safe". This was a video from 2009, so I'm wondering if the general concensus has now altered.
Avatar n tn I forgot to mention, when I had my bypass surgery, I was not given plavix at all. I was only taking aspirin then.
Avatar n tn Do not stop taking Plavix (Clopidogrel) without consulting the doctor who prescribed it! Plavix inhibits platelet bloodclotting function, to prevent (life-threatening) blood clots (in i.e. cardiovascular stents). Often dental work can be done without stopping Plavix. Consult your dentist for that. When you stop taking Plavix, complete recovery of platelet function takes about 7 days after the last dose.
Avatar m tn While still taking Plavix, I had the misfortune of developing a bowel obstruction which required emergency surgery. The fact that I was was taking Plavix was a major concern, and the surgery took place expecting bleeding problems. Some bleeding did take place but they were prepared for it and I got through it OK. As Kenkeith suggests, when I had planned medical procedures when taking Plavix, I just quit taking it a week ahead of the planned procedures.
976897 tn?1379167602 Just to complicate the Plavix/generic Plavix issue, I was told to stop taking Plavix after bypass surgery, and the bruising immediately became a bigger issue and remains a bigger problem today. I'm not sure the bruising/bleeding issue is completely understood. I still take 80mg aspirin, and wonder if that is the cause. pippi331, sometimes one is allergic to the filler with generic drugs. I'd sure report your situation as soon as possible.
Avatar f tn I understand you being on Plavix for your heart, and you should remain on it. But I am very surprised to hear that your husband is still on Coumadin for a clot 3 years ago. Is this clot the only reason he takes it? My daughter had a blood clot due to a very serious car accident, but once her injuries healed, she no longer had to take anything. He needs to address this with his doctor, and ask why he still has to take it.
Avatar n tn I had a stomach ache one morning, and in a few hours I was in agony, and was diagnosed after a ambulance ride with a double bowel obstruction. It required surgery, and certainly my Plavix usage was a huge concern because of it by the surgeon. However, because they knew about it they took precautions which I don't quite understand, the operative report includes notes about additional platlets, some bleeding, and I was in the hospital for over a week.
Avatar m tn Lately, there have many posts related to the duration of plavix and it seems patients are given plavix for a long period of time. It has been my understanding from what I have read and my experience, plavix is recommended for individuals that have a drug eluding stent to help prevent clots for up to a year. That has been my experience. DES when compared to bare metal stent implants have an increase of clots and restenosis for a period of one year...
