Avatar n tn Recently he was rushed to the hospital with blood in his vomit and stools. They said he had last 60% of his blood and immediately preceeded to give him blood, total 9 pints. After much reading up on ulcers and his medicine's side-effects, we discovered that Plavix causes ulcers. He was bleeding from a huge ulcer in his stomach. They immediately DC'd his Coumadin and Plavix. Are there any alternatives to these two medicines that you are aware of?
Avatar m tn My cardiologist performed a special blood test and found that although Plavix thinned my blood, it was not an effective medication for my body chemistry. There are many others. You may want to have your cardiologist speak directly to your gasteroenterologist. If he won't listen or work with you, it is time to find another. Good luck.
Avatar n tn my mother has a blood clot in her aorta. today she had a shunt put in. The doctor put her on plavics is this safe?
Avatar m tn A stroke in 2004 left me with left side weakness due from a large blood clot. Then another stroke in 2008 from another blood clot that hit behind the left eye. I had angioplasty in 2003 for a 75% and 90% blockage but no stents. After the first stoke I was put on Coumadin and thin soon thereafter put on only two baby aspirin. In getting ready for sius surgery in 2008 I was taken off my aspirin for 8 days and the day before the surgery had the second stroke.
Avatar n tn I have read so often that you should not take Plavix and aspirin, but it seems to also be common to prescribe both plavix and aspirin in certain situations. I am worried and confused. Thanks.
Avatar f tn Sometimes aspirin is used in place of the Plavix, and the patient will be on aspirin and warfarin. That type of combo regimen is used when the doctor doesn't think that one drug alone is enough to do the job, and one drug obviously wasn't enough in your case. It seems that your Plavix and warfarin regimen is working, so I'll join you in giving thanks for that.
Avatar n tn Some doctors recommend 6 months to a year on Plavix and some recommend for life. Plavix will help to avoid having heart attacks and strokes. The blood in your mouth is most likely because of the Plavix along with the bruising. It is the side effects. The circulation is from your heart medication and heart medication makes you tired. You need the heart medication and Plavix and it would be risking to stop the Plavix.
Avatar m tn I am currently taking plavix, 81mg aspirin AND coumadin on a daily basis. I had a stent put in in July 2008 and triple by pass in 2006. I'm 64 and had my first MI at 33. My father died of an MI at 46, my EF is under 30%. My EP (at one hospital) just suggested I eliminate the plavix while my CHF specialist (at a nearby major research university) said I would be on plavix for a "long time" (forever?).
Avatar n tn I have heard that there is some problem mixing vitamin K with a blood thinner. I am taking 75 mg of plavix and cannot find anything about the vitamin K interaction. I need additional calcium, and the brand I am looking at taking would give me 40mcg of vitamin K. Is this safe or a problem? Where can I find how much vitamin K is in a serving of broccoli or spinich?
Avatar f tn But, I still ended up in the ER after the first year of walking and required a stent. It was then that I started on blood pressure meds and the aspirin and Plavix, etc. It was by choice that I stopped taking the Plavix. I know the doctors would prefer that I continue with this, but I don't care for the side effects. I felt great until last summer when I wasn't able to walk. There was a heat wave in this part of Texas and I couldn't tolerate the intense heat.
161427 tn?1229911282 She had a bleeder in the brain and they stopped plavix. The difference in her being off after just two days was nothing short of amazing. Doctors won't consider using garlic and fish oil to reduce the plavix dosage on people who had strokes because they think it puts them at risk for a lawsuit if the person has another stoke on "non-conventional" treatment.
1210142 tn?1266077031 He has recently had to put me back on Nexium for severe acid reflux, but told me to take Plavix in the morn. and Nexium at night. Have to have some blood work done in 1 month.
329994 tn?1301663248 No, my cardio doctor did not take the blood pressure in my legs. He did an ultrasound of my ankles and the area at my groin and leg. I don't know what pedal or popliteal mean? Since my post, I have seen my cardio doc again and he did some tests on me and wants me to see a neurologist for possible spinal stenosis. I am in the works for arranging that right now. My cholesterol hasn't been tested for almost a year, it was 211. I get tested again in June and am hoping it is down.
Avatar f tn So in addition aspirin (inhibits platelets) there is Plavix that reduces the risk of blood clots, and the usual therapy is to take Plavix for a year (after a year less risk for clots) and aspirin therapy is continued indifinitely to inhibit platelet formation. To prevent this, patients have to take two different anti-platelet agents. So, aspirin inhibits platelets, it's a fairly mild drug, and there's another drug we use routinely called Plavixl.
Avatar n tn Plavix is a blood thinner and I didn't know it affected pressure? Anyway, dental cleaning can produce a tiny amount of gum bleeding and will not produce any problems. I have my teeth cleaned every 6 months and it soon stops bleeding. The problems come if you need a tooth removed. Flycaster is correct, your dentists should always have a list of current medication.
Avatar f tn Several weeks ago, the cardiologist took me off of Coumadin and added two 81-mg, aspirin and recommended that I stay on the Plavix for the biopsy. The radiologist's office contacted the cardiologist and they agreed I could go off Plavix for seven days prior to the biopsy. At this point, I am more concerned about a blood clot in my stents than breast cancer. Is it safe for me to discontinue Plavix?
Avatar n tn Some doctors prescribe taking the Plavix for a lifetime and other prescribed it for 6 month to a year. Plavix really helps avoid the blood clots. Shortness of breath when walking would be a warning sign that something is wrong and he should let his doctor know if this happens.
Avatar m tn This can also be confusing for some people. Restenosis is possible in 3 ways, and plavix will only help with one of them. In the older days of stenting, they used bare metal stents which had a high failure rate soon after implanting. Scar tissue was the big problem. Any tissue in the body when damaged loves to cover the area with scar tissue, the artery lining being no exception.
Avatar f tn the back doctor will not operate on plavix. the result chronic pain and pain pills every four hours and can only recline in chair. what do you do? does anyone know a back doctor in alabama or georgia with experience in these cases.
Avatar n tn As stated in prior post, restenosis is in the low single digits for the general population for drug eluding stents. As an idividual with a prior history of restenosis. obviously the probability is higher on that basis. I don't believe there is an answer to your question as there are considerations on an individual basis that may or may not be statistically relevant to the general population as risk factors are not evenly distributed to the population in question.
Avatar f tn Assumed it was a hemorrhoid so paid no attention to it. Just occasional blood in stool. In the past few months, there is more blood with stool and she has mostly diarrhea when she goes. Not a lot of formed stools now. OK so about a month ago, there started to be small amounts of mucous with the stool (and still blood). Now in the past 2 weeks, the blood and mucous are even more volume. and it is every time.
1679243 tn?1307674938 This is more of a question about Warfarin, Plavix, blood thinning treatment ect... I was swimming yesterday with my kids and was rubbing my eyes a good bit. Afterwards my wife noticed my left eye was bleeding, not pouring blood but there is blood in the white part of my eye. Doesn't hurt or bother me it's just a nice size blood spot. I've been on Warfarin and Plavix and a daily baby aspirin for over 6 months to treat my heart disease.
Avatar n tn Jan. 06 I was scheduled for hip replacement surgery, before I was to be cleared I had to have a stress test...The doctors found a blood flow problem and found I had 4 blockages...I had 3 medicated stents put in and the fourth was 100% blocked, doctors were not overly concerned as they have noted that in prior cases the artery where that blockage is have branched off and created a new entrance to the heart...Here I am 2 years later, still needing hip replacement...
