I have a call in to our family Dr. and waiting for a return. We were being seen by a Neurologist, but she abruptly cancelled my husbands January appt. and said she was leaving town for a month, and did not refer us to any other Dr. so we saw the family Dr. who is prescribing.
Avatar f tn Folic acid supplementation in folate-deficient patients with epilepsy changes the pharmacokinetics of phenytoin, usually leading to lower serum phenytoin concentrations and possible seizure breakthrough..." It however says that initiation of Folic acid and phenytoin together is beneficial. Since you can't go back and start all over again, you can take a small dose. It has been observed that as los as 1mg dose can perturb phenytoin’s levels, You may take doses lower than 1mg/day.
Avatar m tn Hi everyone, I'm new to this community. My neurologist just informed me that Osteoporosis and shrinkage of the Cerebellum are very serious side effects for long term users of Dilantin. Does anyone know more about this? I've been taking 500mg of Dilantin for over 30 years since I was a teenager, and now I'm terribly worried. Not one of the neurologists had mentioned anything about this over the years, and now at 46, I've learned that I may have severe osteoporosis.
Avatar f tn I see that this question was posted four years ago but still seems to be a mystery. I too am a "mature" woman of 50 whose dilantin levels have dropped severely and I think I have figured out why!!! Apparently, taking calcium at the same time as dilantin can prevent the dilantin from getting absorbed into your blood. After being seizure free for almost 25 years, I had two seizures, and, of course, was completely devistated.
Avatar n tn Acute alcohol consumption increases the availability of phenytoin (Dilantin) and the risk of drug-related side effects. Chronic drinking may decrease phenytoin availability, significantly reducing the patient's protection against epileptic seizures, even during a period of abstinence. Any form of alcohol, even beer is contraindicated for some time when you are weaned off dilantin. Sexual activity is an exertional activity which can cause exertional or sexual headache.

I have had extreme fatigue and chest pains. Seeing neurologist for medicine change and have be referred to endocrinologist. How concerned should I be? What tests should be given? Is this my pituitary gland?
Avatar f tn According to my Lippincott nursing drug book, Phenytoin (Dilantin) may decrease the effect of the steroid when used together. Therefore the steroid dosage would be adjusted according to what your physician prescribes. It does also state that prednisone is used cautiously in patients with history or seizures. There is nothing specific about those anticonvulsant med levels being affected. But I'm sure your physician will be monitoring you carefully.

Avatar m tn In a small study, phenytoin-induced seizures occurred most often in patients with serum phenytoin concentrations of 50 mcg/ml or higher.[393] Peripheral neuropathy, usually occurring weeks to months after drug initiation, has also been reported in patients receiving phenytoin. A single case report describes the onset of neuropathy within a few hours of drug administration.[9780] Adverse GI effects of phenytoin therapy include nausea/vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, and anorexia.

Avatar f tn 7 Months ago I had a physical, bloodwork to check dialntin level, dr called to say level was very high (i believe over 30) and told me to cut my dosage from 400 mg/day to 200mg. At same time I was taking phenytoin instead of dilantin for the first time. I started to feel tension and tingling in right leg and getting muscle spasms at night, within a week I got the dilantin back and was back up to 400 mg.Weaned off dialtin(had low vit d) since then and on to keppra.

Avatar n tn Phenytoin (Dilantin et al) works best with me. It's off patent and about 70 years on the market. Low doses best. These repetitive thoughts are a brain electrical problem (inappropriate electrical activity), and while not as intense a problem as epilepsy, they can be treated the same way. I take 50 - 100 mg as a dose and it smoothes those intrusions and does NOT make me tired or have noticeable side effects except feeling normal.

Avatar n tn Low blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D may mean that you are not getting enough exposure to sunlight or enough dietary vitamin D to meet your body’s demand or that there is a problem with its absorption from the intestines. Occasionally, drugs used to treat seizures, particularly phenytoin (Dilantin), can interfere with the production of 25-hydroxyvitamin D in the liver. It can also be due to parathyroid gland problems. Very few foods in nature contain vitamin D.
