Avatar n tn There are studies indicating the vitamin D can help you lose weight; however, it's not a sure thing as yet. Vitamin D works with calcium and magnesium to prevent bone loss, plus helps restore energy levels. Vitamin B12 does NOT boost your metabolism. It gives you more energy, so you're more likely to exercise; it's the exercise that actually boosts your metabolism.
Avatar n tn Low blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D may mean that you are not getting enough exposure to sunlight or enough dietary vitamin D to meet your body’s demand or that there is a problem with its absorption from the intestines. Occasionally, drugs used to treat seizures, particularly phenytoin (Dilantin), can interfere with the production of 25-hydroxyvitamin D in the liver. It can also be due to parathyroid gland problems. Very few foods in nature contain vitamin D.

Avatar n tn Hi, is he on some other drugs too because other drugs might decrease the level of phenytoin by enhancing its metabolism via induction of enzymes and can lead to drug drug interction. “Drugs which may decrease phenytoin levels include: carbamazepine, chronic alcohol abuse, reserpine, and sucralfate. Moban® brand of molindone hydrochloride contains calcium ions which interfere with the absorption of phenytoin.
Avatar f tn Vitamin D is essential for the metabolism of thyroid hormones. Which came first, or is there even a causal relationship??? You want your D well up in the range, not just barely. Your FT4 is still a little low...only 30% of range. Using a more reasonable TSH range of 0.3-3.0, your TSH is also a little high. There's plenty of room for an increase in your labs if you still have hypo symptoms. Be aware, though, that hypo and vitamin D deficiency can have many of the same symptoms.
Avatar f tn Vitamin D regulates the intestinal absorption of calcium, while PTH regulates the activation of vitamin D. Too much and too little vitamin D can imbalance calcium metabolism. You may try to use the Ask an Expert part of this forum.
Avatar f tn I forgot to include the results for Ferritin and Vitamin D. They were: Ferritin: 40 (10-200) Vitamin D: 46.7 (30-80) I currently take 47.5 mg of slow fe per day and 1,000-2,000 IUs of vitamin d3.
Avatar f tn In recently looking at D supplements, I came across this statement on a manfacturer's website "Most Vitamin D supplements use ergocalciferol or Vitamin D-2 but Vitabase Vitamin D uses cholecalciferol, D-3, a more bioactive form. This is the same form of Vitamin D made by the skin’s exposure to sunlight.
Avatar f tn In the report issued today, the committee reviewed studies on the metabolism and physiology of calcium and vitamin D and their influence on health. Dietary reference intakes were determined using the estimated average requirement (EAR; the level at which 50% of the population's needs are met), recommended dietary allowance (level at which 95% of the population's needs are met), tolerable upper intake level, and adequate intake level.
Avatar n tn Excessive use of sunscreen, having IBS, Crohn’s or celiac disease could be the other risk factors for vitamin D deficiency. Since Vit D is a fat soluble vitamin, disorders affecting fat metabolism can affect Vit D absorption. These include liver disorders, Crohn’s disease, colitis, and kidney problems. Rarely this is a hereditary disorder.

Avatar n tn ) At high concentrations in vitro, clopidogrel inhibits P450 (C). Accordingly, Plavix may interfere with the metabolism of phenytoin, tamoxifen, tolbutamide, warfarin, torsemide, fluvastatin, and many non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, but there are no data with which to predict the magnitude of these interactions. Caution should be used when any of these drugs is co administered with Plavix.
Avatar f tn 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25 (OH) D) test should be used to diagnose a vitamin D deficiency state. Vitamin D deficiency is very common with thyroid disease. In one study, 92% of patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis were vitamin D deficient. Check your labs to see if a 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25 (OH) D) was requested by the doctor. If not, then that is one test to request.
Avatar n tn Hi, drugs like phenytoin, carbamazepine, gabapentin, and pregabalin, tricyclic antidepressants like amitryptline and duloxetine are some of the alternatives. But every drug has got side effects, so it is more of hit and trial to find out the right medicine for right candidate. Individual’s body respond differently to different drugs depending upon their genetic make up and metabolism.
Avatar f tn Vitamin D deficiency is commonly due to not enough sunlight. However, the causes of vitamin D deficiency are numerous and you may have more than one condition contributing to this deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency is estimated to affect at least a billion people worldwide. When vitamin D levels are not rising well or at all (vitamin D resistance) low magnesium levels are the first suspect. High doses of vitamin D can worsen an existing magnesium deficiency.
Avatar f tn It has to do with bone loss caused by higher metabolism of those with hyperthyroidism. It's to do with how calcium, magnesium, phosphorous and vitamin D are metabolized and resorption and reformation of bone. Here's an article you might read to get a better understanding of it all: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3169869/ There's bone ALP and liver ALP... Bone ALP is, typically, higher in those with hyperthyroidism.

Avatar m tn I agree with armywife92 about the Vitamin D. Reading between the lines, i thought about Low Vitamin D often being associated with being hypothyroid, and since you were tested for TSH and FT4, I wondered if perhaps you had symptoms that resulted in these tests, especially for thyroid. I imagine that with your TSH being within the old reference range listed, and your Free T4 being in range, that the doctor decided you were "normal" as far as thyroid issues.
