I'm a 48 yr old black female who began having seizures 7-8 yrs ago. they have increased to about 1 time a week. I'm taking 750 mg of Keppra and Dilantin 100mg 2 x a day.
Just wanted to update this. I found out that my phnytoin level is 22. not 2. The paper had moved when they faxed it and I didn't get the whole number. This is still low but not at bad. I got my appointment to see the neurologist for Aug 14.

Chronic drinking may decrease phenytoin availability, significantly reducing the patient's protection against epileptic seizures, even during a period of abstinence. Any form of alcohol, even beer is contraindicated for some time when you are weaned off dilantin.

The neurologist prescribed it after he had TIA number of times. He used to get seizures like symptoms and loose his consciousness. He was bedridden and stopped walking completely. Now, he is up on his feet and doing his regular work after regular physiotherapy.
At first, he had trigeminal neuralgia and he was on carbamezapine 150mg twice daily and then 300mg twice daily. I just need to know how long he has to be on Citilin. Is it a safe drug to be used for long time?
A few weeks ago I woke up with yellow crust on the corner of my lips and it went away in 2 days, and today I woke up and it's in the exact same spot again except a little more then before. It doesn't hurt or itch, it feels like my lips are very very dry. I don't smoke, I have grandmal seizures and my medication is phenytoin and kepra but I didn't read anywhere that would be a side effect so I'm worried this could be a STD or something.
I'm having the same problem with low levels. I've been taking Dilantin since 2005. I was toxic once and my dosage had to be lowered. But, now my levels are too low. I take Keppra and have had no side-effects. I'm also taking Gabapentin. I've had 2 seizures. My Neurologist told me that a person that has 1 seizure in their lifetime needs to take medication for the rest of their life. It's so scary. I hope everything turns out okay for you.
I will add some insight from what I know; I am not a doctor, but have been shuffled from many, and had many experiences.
Was the change right after the seizure, or was it gradual?
How long did the "massive seizure" last, do you know? There is a condition called "Status epilepticus", where the brain can be in a constant seizure state for 30 minutes. The longer the seizure, the more likely you are for brain damage from the seizure itself.

What tests were done previously? Eptoin contains phenytoin which is used to control seizures. SIde effects are usually dose-related and include nystagmus, decreased coordination, and mental confusion, dizziness, insomnia, and headaches. You can read more about this through this link:

5 months now and thank goodness her seizures have stopped. She was having grand mal seizures every other day after some time...they just kept getting closer together.
I do see that she is more hungry than normal but one thing that is differant from what I am seeing in the other posts is that she is actually getting up earlier and earlier every morning? I am trying to put her to bed later but when she normally would get up at 6:30, became 6:00 and now 5:00 am.

After 1 week on this dosage, we called the vet as side effects were really awful. He suggested that we half the dose which we did do. He seems a bit better, but is still very disoriented and is urinating in the house. He also seems to be bumping into things and reading other posts, some owners have mentioned blindness. Is this a side effect of pb, and if so will it go away?another concern is our vet is waiting one month before doing blood work. Should we have this done sooner?

I have been on Keppra and Lamotrigene for many months for seizures. No problem with seizure meds but began having terrible oder issues ,everything smells horrible - skin, food , lotions, shampoos etc. Could this be interaction with these meds . ?

Our population is divided into 4 type of metabolizers ranging from rapid to slow metabolizers depending upon the speed of elimination of drug from body.
Some of the side effects reported vary due to different breeds & several other factors. We have 1 Rottweiler mix male & 2 rescued dogs (German Rottweiler female & American Rottweiler female). German Rotty was approx 2 y/o when rescued. She had her first seizure approx 2 months ago. Scared me to death. A month later she had another so I knew some of the signs before hand. My mixed male & American Rotty female were going crazy when the seizures occurred.
