Avatar m tn In a small study, phenytoin-induced seizures occurred most often in patients with serum phenytoin concentrations of 50 mcg/ml or higher.[393] Peripheral neuropathy, usually occurring weeks to months after drug initiation, has also been reported in patients receiving phenytoin. A single case report describes the onset of neuropathy within a few hours of drug administration.[9780] Adverse GI effects of phenytoin therapy include nausea/vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, and anorexia.
Avatar n tn I'm a 48 yr old black female who began having seizures 7-8 yrs ago. they have increased to about 1 time a week. I'm taking 750 mg of Keppra and Dilantin 100mg 2 x a day.
Avatar m tn Whereas if you are a chronic alcoholic, the phenytoin levels may be lower than expected and can cause seizures. I suggest you consult with your neurologist in this regard. Hope this information helps. Take care.
Avatar f tn The neurologist prescribed it after he had TIA number of times. He used to get seizures like symptoms and loose his consciousness. He was bedridden and stopped walking completely. Now, he is up on his feet and doing his regular work after regular physiotherapy. At first, he had trigeminal neuralgia and he was on carbamezapine 150mg twice daily and then 300mg twice daily. I just need to know how long he has to be on Citilin. Is it a safe drug to be used for long time?
Avatar m tn My first attempt about 4 years ago to Lamictal was disastrous. Landed up having 60 -70 petit mal like seizures over 24 hours that nothing they gave me could control until I got back on Dilantin's full dosage. And I was at the beginning of the transition. It's very frustrating emotionally - as a patient you feel at a complete loss - helpless to do anything but endure the symptoms and push through the day. Please keep me posted on his transition.
Avatar f tn A few weeks ago I woke up with yellow crust on the corner of my lips and it went away in 2 days, and today I woke up and it's in the exact same spot again except a little more then before. It doesn't hurt or itch, it feels like my lips are very very dry. I don't smoke, I have grandmal seizures and my medication is phenytoin and kepra but I didn't read anywhere that would be a side effect so I'm worried this could be a STD or something.
Avatar n tn Moban® brand of molindone hydrochloride contains calcium ions which interfere with the absorption of phenytoin. Ingestion times of phenytoin and antacid preparations containing calcium should be staggered in patients with low serum phenytoin levels to prevent absorption problems”. Taken from http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/phenyt_od.htm Our population is divided into 4 type of metabolizers ranging from rapid to slow metabolizers depending upon the speed of elimination of drug from body.
Avatar m tn Subsequent to discharge on 10 July, she was put on phenytoin 200 mg od. She broke out with fever again on 15 July and the fever lasted for about 4 days with daily temperature peaking in the afternoon (max 101 F). The face and body were covered with rash similar to measles which resolved by 20 July. Could she have had measles at her age? Why did she have convulsions? Could anyone throw any light on the episode.
Avatar f tn I hate to say but that is very common. I have complex partial seizures and my seizures change. When I was younger it wasn't that uncommon for me to have a couple a day. It has taken me forever to get them controlled. I still have seizures but I can go a month without seizures at times but they still pop up every now and then. They are not as profound. I have been on a lot of meds and it took many years to get the seizures somewhat controlled.
Avatar f tn Does prednisone effect dilantin and lamictal levels? I've been on dilantin and lamictal for over 5 years for seizures. I'm being tested for autoimmune hepatitis, I just had a liver biopsy. I don't want to take a chance on having a seizure.

Avatar f tn Your neurologist seems to be making a reasonable suggestion. I would follow his suggestions. You can always go back on the medication.
769013 tn?1234938239 Again a prompt evaluation is needed within an hour to diagnose. However a negative EEG does not rule out seizures nor does a positive one confirm seizures for sure. EEG reading is very complex and needs experience. TIA and seizures to start with can happen with a prolonged gap of normalcy in between. Ofcourse it could be something as simple as anemia or low sugar or disturbed sleep pattern or just stress. You can check out disturbe sleep patterns as always you get the attack in mornings.
758251 tn?1277474265 There are many triggers for seizures, one of which is stress. She might just be extremely overwhelmed which is worsening the seizures. That's what does it for me. Didn't she have an EEG that showed she was having seizures? Before I was diagnosed with epilepsy they thought I might have a mood disorder but my seizures weren't that obvious so it was harder to diagnose. I was about 15 at the time and am almost 20 now.
Avatar f tn I took tegetrol first, epiliem for years and and the other one mentioned (I cannot remember the name) last year I had some terrible seizures and was placed on dilitan 300 mg each night. I have found since those seizures last year I am forgetting, getting absent in the middle of meetings etc. My EEG was normal, I had an MRI done the doctor wants to check it out. He did the dilantin test said the level were good.
Avatar n tn I have been on Keppra and Lamotrigene for many months for seizures. No problem with seizure meds but began having terrible oder issues ,everything smells horrible - skin, food , lotions, shampoos etc. Could this be interaction with these meds . ?
Avatar m tn Hi there, i had a brain injury in feb and havent had any seizures yet but i was told in order to get back to driving/work etc i might have to take an anti-seizure medication. 5268376 tn?1406179712 For instance, I take Phenytoin for seizures, look at the list of drugs that can increase Phenytoin concentrations, sometimes to serious levels: "Drugs that may increase phenytoin serum levels, include: acute alcohol intake, amiodarone, anti-epileptic agents (ethosuximide, felbamate, oxcarbazepine, methsuximide, topiramate), azoles (fluconazole, ketoconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole), capecitabine, chloramphenicol, chlordiazepoxide, cimetidine, diazepam, disulfiram, estrogens, fluorou
1285110 tn?1420147378 Last year he had a grand mal seizure - with no apparent cause - he was put on to phenytoin for 6 months but as it stayed below theraputic levels and he had no sign of further seizures he was weened off it. Over the last 6 weeks he has become tired, miserable, sad, angry, withdrawing from activities, complaining of dizzy spells and headaches.... because of his autism his pain threshold is crazy ( he had a huge hernia and felt no pain... he dislocates his knee cap by choice with no pain)...
Avatar n tn Acute alcohol consumption increases the availability of phenytoin (Dilantin) and the risk of drug-related side effects. Chronic drinking may decrease phenytoin availability, significantly reducing the patient's protection against epileptic seizures, even during a period of abstinence. Any form of alcohol, even beer is contraindicated for some time when you are weaned off dilantin. Sexual activity is an exertional activity which can cause exertional or sexual headache.
Avatar f tn I have heard of non epileptic seizures, there is a group on facebook that I've come across which may be able to give you more info. But like the previous post - there can be many reason's - hassle the doctor.
Avatar m tn Another drug which is commonly used in this setting is phenytoin or Dilantin. Maybe you can start this with your mother, but this also has side effects and hence may not suit her. Please do not start any medication without consulting her doctor. Take care!
Avatar f tn Folic acid supplementation in folate-deficient patients with epilepsy changes the pharmacokinetics of phenytoin, usually leading to lower serum phenytoin concentrations and possible seizure breakthrough..." It however says that initiation of Folic acid and phenytoin together is beneficial. Since you can't go back and start all over again, you can take a small dose. It has been observed that as los as 1mg dose can perturb phenytoin’s levels, You may take doses lower than 1mg/day.
