Avatar n tn Such medications as carbamazepine and phenytoin have been shown to displace thyroxine from plasma protein-binding sites and potentially increase its clearance. Free thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) will be increased, while serum T4 and T3 levels will be decreased. Authors have speculated, therefore, that thyroid-stimulating hormone should be followed to determine if a patient on anticonvulsants has normal thyroid levels (JAMA. 1996;275:1495-1498).
Avatar m tn At the time of my blood draw I had been on the birth control Reclipsen for 1 month. The packaging says it can raise sex hormone binding globulin, thyroid binding globulin, and other binding globulins. I was also menstruating at the time and I think I had a touch of the flu or a cold. My doctor didn't seem too concerned and just wants to re-test my protein and nitrogen December 29. He brushed off my groin area pain as a pulled muscle or something. 2 months away!
Avatar n tn Most of the thyroid hormones in the blood are attached to a protein called thyroid binding globulin (TBG). If there is an excess or deficiency of this protein it alters the T4 or T3 measurement but does not affect the action of the hormone. If a patient appears to have normal thyroid function, but an unexplained high or low T4, or T3, it may be due to an increase or decrease of TBG. Direct measurement of TBG can be done and will explain the abnormal value.

Avatar m tn Association of Higher Plasma Vitamin D Binding Protein and Lower Free Calcitriol Levels with Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate Use and Plasma and Intracellular Tenofovir Pharmacokinetics: Cause of a Functional Vitamin D Deficiency? "The finding of a 26% increase in vitamin D binding protein and a 42% decrease in free 1,25-OH(2)D between the lowest and highest quintiles of plasma tenofovir has not been previously reported.
798555 tn?1292787551 attempts to correct for changes in thyroid binding globulin due to liver disease, protein losing states, pregnancy or various drugs*** - guess this is what hes doing.
Avatar m tn Curious if anyone has any thoughts on the potential efficacy of core protein allosteric modulators?
Avatar f tn does anyone plan binding there stomach after the baby's born? If so what are you going to use?
87972 tn?1322661239 We used in vitro protein expression and microfluidic affinity analysis to study RNA binding by the HCV transmembrane protein NS4B, which plays an essential role in HCV RNA replication. We show that HCV NS4B binds RNA and that this binding is specific for the 3' terminus of the negative strand of the viral genome with a dissociation constant (Kd) of 3.4 nM. A high-throughput microfluidic screen of a compound library identified 18 compounds that substantially inhibited binding of RNA by NS4B.
Avatar m tn In a small study, phenytoin-induced seizures occurred most often in patients with serum phenytoin concentrations of 50 mcg/ml or higher.[393] Peripheral neuropathy, usually occurring weeks to months after drug initiation, has also been reported in patients receiving phenytoin. A single case report describes the onset of neuropathy within a few hours of drug administration.[9780] Adverse GI effects of phenytoin therapy include nausea/vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, and anorexia.
Avatar n tn Since most of the T3 is bound to protein, the total T3 can be affected by protein levels and protein binding ability, but the free T3 is not.
Avatar f tn Folic acid supplementation in folate-deficient patients with epilepsy changes the pharmacokinetics of phenytoin, usually leading to lower serum phenytoin concentrations and possible seizure breakthrough..." It however says that initiation of Folic acid and phenytoin together is beneficial. Since you can't go back and start all over again, you can take a small dose. It has been observed that as los as 1mg dose can perturb phenytoin’s levels, You may take doses lower than 1mg/day.
Avatar n tn Combining fluoxetine or paroxetine with phenytoin can also lead to increased phenytoin side effects and reduce blood levels of paroxetine. You really need to discuss the potential drug interactions with your own doctor.
Avatar n tn The binding protein is known as thyroid binding globulin (TBG). Increased TBG reduces total T4 and T3. Increased TBG levels may be due to hypothyroidism, liver disease, and pregnancy. Decreased TBG elevates total T4 and T3. Decreased TBG levels may be due to hyperthyroidism, renal disease, liver disease, severe systemic illness, Cushing syndrome, medications, and malnutrition. TGB does not affect free T4 and free T3.
973741 tn?1342342773 Replace fatty meats with lean protein sources like chicken, turkey, fish, beans, and tofu. Eat whole grains: Whole grains are high in fiber, which can help lower cholesterol levels. Limit sugar and refined carbohydrates: Foods that are high in sugar and refined carbohydrates can raise cholesterol levels. Limit your intake of sugary drinks, sweets, and processed foods that are high in sugar and refined carbohydrates.
1291453 tn?1272143404 You should tell your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms while taking phenytoin, so that your blood level of phenytoin can be measured and your dose reduced if necessary. " Also, he has had a major surgery, and will need time to recover. However, any changes need to be reported to the doctor.
Avatar n tn Moban® brand of molindone hydrochloride contains calcium ions which interfere with the absorption of phenytoin. Ingestion times of phenytoin and antacid preparations containing calcium should be staggered in patients with low serum phenytoin levels to prevent absorption problems”. Taken from http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/phenyt_od.htm Our population is divided into 4 type of metabolizers ranging from rapid to slow metabolizers depending upon the speed of elimination of drug from body.

Avatar n tn Thank you for your question, you are relatively fine with Phenytoin and the seizure episodes in a form of lack of speech are the residue of a generalized type seizure. I don’t have a full description of your consciousness during the lack of speech episodes to decide whether this start is a partial epilepsy which can continue in a generalized or it is a generalized one from the first moment..
Avatar m tn Hello AB, welcome to the medhelp forum. Phenytoin can cause certain side effects like dizziness and mental confusion. Some people may also manifest incoordinate movements. Weight gain is not a documented side effect. It could be related to your alcohol consumption or wrong dietary habits and lack of exercise. An occasional one or two drink may be fine but moderate or large amount can cause significant increases in blood levels of phenytoin due to induction of hepatic enzymes.
Avatar m tn SAG has been found to specifically inhibit HIV-1 infectivity and to bind to virus through the envelope protein gp120. Although SAG binds to gp120 of the virus, the exact nature of this binding has not been characterized. Using surface plasmon resonance technology, we have found that SAG interacts with recombinant envelopes derived from diverse HIV-1 isolates with KD values ranging from 10-7 to 10-10 M, comparable to gp120-sCD4 binding. Furthermore, SAG binding to gp120 is Ca2+ dependent.
