Avatar m tn In a small study, phenytoin-induced seizures occurred most often in patients with serum phenytoin concentrations of 50 mcg/ml or higher.[393] Peripheral neuropathy, usually occurring weeks to months after drug initiation, has also been reported in patients receiving phenytoin. A single case report describes the onset of neuropathy within a few hours of drug administration.[9780] Adverse GI effects of phenytoin therapy include nausea/vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, and anorexia.
Avatar f tn Warfarin is the oral anticoagulant most frequently used to control and prevent thromboembolic disorders. Warfarin has a complex dose-response relationship that makes safe and effective use a challenge. Loading doses of warfarin are not warranted and may result in bleeding complications. Interactions with other drugs must be considered, and therapy in elderly patients requires careful management.
Avatar m tn After a relatively brief (1 min) insertive unprotected oral experience with unknown, promiscuous woman in the US, I started a 7 day course of doxyline (2 x 100mg daily) just about 1,5 hour after the experience (200 mg loading dose as first dose). Would this prophylactic intervention also prevent incubating syphilis? If not, how long would I need to get a reliable test answer on a modern IgG/IgM syphilis test after termination of doxy treatment?

Avatar f tn Thank you so much for your immediate reply doctor. My dad has been using Citilin since December 2007. Is it okay to use Citilin beyond 3 months or should it be discontinued? Also, is a tapering dose needed or stopped all of a sudden? Will it affect my dad's condition and will he get the stroke or seizures like attack again after discontinuing this medicine? After December 2007 he has not had any attack so far. Kindly let me know about this doctor. Once again, thank you very much doctor.
Avatar m tn m self-diagnosing and is not willing to make this change in the type of B12 or in the loading dose. I AM NOT going to regress and go back to the way I was feeling. I am a very active person and I am a triathlete. Both my personal, professional and married life are being negatively affected. I am aware that you can order B12 injections (hydroxy and methyl) from Canada, New Zealand, and India; however, I am wary to circumvent the health system and possibly inject myself with heaven knows what!
Avatar n tn Combining fluoxetine or paroxetine with phenytoin can also lead to increased phenytoin side effects and reduce blood levels of paroxetine. You really need to discuss the potential drug interactions with your own doctor.
Avatar n tn Issues with Seizure Medications For some people using certain medications, generics can be a problem. This is most often a problem with medications in which even a miniscule change in dose can be ineffective or cause side effects. Dilantin (phenytoin) is one of those medications.

610654 tn?1270480027 Apply calamine lotion at the site of the lesions and see if it helps. You could take some oral antihistamine medications like cetrizine or loratadine. You need to maintain a good personal hygiene . Anti-itch drugs, often antihistamine, may reduce the itch during a flare up of eczema, and the reduced scratching in turn reduces damage and irritation to the skin. For mild-moderate eczema a weak steroid may be used (e.g.

Avatar n tn Thank you for your question, you are relatively fine with Phenytoin and the seizure episodes in a form of lack of speech are the residue of a generalized type seizure. I don’t have a full description of your consciousness during the lack of speech episodes to decide whether this start is a partial epilepsy which can continue in a generalized or it is a generalized one from the first moment..
Avatar m tn Hello AB, welcome to the medhelp forum. Phenytoin can cause certain side effects like dizziness and mental confusion. Some people may also manifest incoordinate movements. Weight gain is not a documented side effect. It could be related to your alcohol consumption or wrong dietary habits and lack of exercise. An occasional one or two drink may be fine but moderate or large amount can cause significant increases in blood levels of phenytoin due to induction of hepatic enzymes.
Avatar f tn Fluconazole is an antifungal and one pill stays in the blood stream for 3 days. It is normal to take a 'loading dose' the first time which helps get a jump start on the infection. I would take it as the doctor directed. Hope this helps.
Avatar f tn He gets an injection every 2-3 weeks as needed....I never wait a month as then you have lost the effect of the loading dose.....However, there are many that give it at 5-6 weeks faithfully & it seems to work...Again, each dog is different.... My Vet sells me the liquid Adequan and Syringes....I give the injections myself...This saves a tremendous amount of money!!!! I buy about 10 doses at a time for around $50..... Most Vets are willing to do this for their clients......
Avatar f tn I see that this question was posted four years ago but still seems to be a mystery. I too am a "mature" woman of 50 whose dilantin levels have dropped severely and I think I have figured out why!!! Apparently, taking calcium at the same time as dilantin can prevent the dilantin from getting absorbed into your blood. After being seizure free for almost 25 years, I had two seizures, and, of course, was completely devistated.
Avatar m tn I was on it for only one and a half years--after seizures were recorded in the EMU during my presurgical workup they dumped me on a high dose, since you can start off on a high dose--and I have osteopenia, primarily on my upper femur on both sides. As I only recently learned, dilantin is especially bad for premenopausal women (not good for anyone, of course) even if you're on it for only a year, for example.
Avatar f tn Hello I'm going to be having 3 stents inserted into my arteries in a couple of weeks time. My specialist (who will be carrying out the procedure) has asked me to take 600mg of clopigdogrel and 600mg of asprin the night before the procedure, and I'm a bit worried about doing this. Is it normal practice? I currently take 75mg of clopidogrel every day.
