Avatar n tn The antiepileptic drugs need to be checked for a dosage modulation, assessment of adverse effects due to chronic usage over years like megaloblastic anemia, gingival hypertrophu and osteomalacia with phenytoin. Take care.
Avatar n tn What are all the symptoms of megaloblastic anemia? I've been diagnosed with this disease. Prior to the diagnosis, I had been taking vitamin B12. How can I still have B12 deficiency? What are the possible reasons? Also, if I took B12 the day before the blood was drawn, that wouldn't change the results, would it? Thanks in advance.
Avatar n tn Vitamin B 12 deficiency can occur due to inadequate dietary intake or impaired absorption. The condition is commonly asymptomatic, but can also present as anemia and called megaloblastic anemia and can be diagnosed by a peripheral smear examination. You must eat enough foods that contain vitamin B12, such as meat, poultry, shellfish, eggs, and dairy products. Follow up with a physician to get yourself prescribed with vitamin B12 supplements. Take care!

Avatar n tn Hi Shorty, Vitamin B12 is a vitamin that is needed to build red blood cells and for normal brain and nerve function. You can become B12 deficient if you do not take in enough of this vitamin, but this is not common since many foods contain B12 so most people get enough in their diet (vegans, however, may not always get enough). You can also become B12 deficient if your body can't absorb or use the B12 that you eat.
Avatar n tn Megaloblastic anemia: Vitamin B-12 or folate or both are deficient Pernicious anemia: Poor vitamin B-12 absorption caused by conditions such as Crohn's disease, an intestinal parasite infection, surgical removal of part of the stomach or intestine, or infection with HIV Dietary deficiency: Eating little or no meat may cause a lack vitamin B-12, while overcooking or eating too few vegetables may cause a folate dificiency Other causes of vitamin deficiency: pregnancy, certain medications,

4939681 tn?1361299299 I've seen a lot of posts recently mentioning "pernicious anemia" and one mentioned high RDW as a possible sign, as well as B12 deficiency. My RDW is always high, but the doctors always just said that it is because I'm anemic, however according to my most recent endo I'm not anemic and my ferritin is "normal". I don't get it... *WBC 4.2 (4-10.5) *Hemoglobin: 12.1 (11.7-15.5) *Hematocrit 36.8 (35-45) *MCV 80 (80-100) **MCH 26.3 (27-33) *MCHC 32.
Avatar f tn t check and understand, he gave me word for it, macrocystic anemia, or megaloblastic anaemia. No one at clinic ever knew what that was, so I never reported them, seems like no doctors know at that medical school. So maybe all doctors that are not hemotologists don't understand. I just do what doctor said, every January 1st, take 1000 mg per day for 90 days. Always, no more headaches, tingling in legs, and other problems like I had before. Can make you have baby with spinabifida.
Avatar n tn I had a pretty significant vitamin B deficiency causing megaloblastic anemia and required shots weekly for several months...Also, I have had problems with highs and lows of calcium, iron, and magnesium...I had a hair analysis done which revealed no heavy metal toxicities, but a deficiency in molybnium (? sp), copper, and nickle...and of course, low ferritin (showed in blood tests too)...My doc believes I have a borderline malabsorption problem and a low intrinsic factor...Something inherited...
Avatar m tn Hello, Anisocytosis describes an abnormal variation in the size of red blood cells and is often found in iron deficiency anemia, megaloblastic anemia, thalassemia, vitamin A or vitamin B 12 deficiency. Red cells varying in shape from elongated to oval, and rich in hemoglobin, are called elliptocytes/ovalocytes. They can be seen in hereditary disorders, such as hereditary elliptocytosis, or in acquired disorders, such as iron deficiency anemia, infectious anemias, thalassemia.
Avatar n tn Did you receive total parental nutrition? TPN causes megaloblastic anemia, where you have the B12 deficiency and apparent iron deficiency (due to the increased size of the red blood cells). Thrombocytosis (high platelet count) is also seen in this condition.
539209 tn?1225972263 Other medications that increase the risk for anemia are certain antibiotics, some antiseizure medications (phenytoin), immunosuppressive drugs (methotrexate, azathioprine), antiarrhythmic drugs (procainamide, quinidine), and anti-clotting drugs (aspirin, warfarin, heparin).

Avatar f tn Dilantin after prolonged use results in lowering of folic acid levels leading to megaloblastic anemia; it can also cause nystagmus, signs of cerebellar problems like ataxia. Apart from these it can also cause swollen gums and lips and easy bruising and bleeding. Hope this helps!
Avatar f tn It could also be due to pressure urticaria. There is a strong possibility of megaloblastic anemia due to deficiency of Vitamin B12 and folic acid. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
Avatar f tn Hi, deficiency of vitamin B 12 leads to defective synthesis of DNA which causes large sized red blood cells. “Megaloblastic anemia is an anemia (of macrocytic classification) which results from inhibition of DNA synthesis in red blood cell production. It is often due to deficiency of vitamin B12 and/or folic acid.
Avatar m tn In a small study, phenytoin-induced seizures occurred most often in patients with serum phenytoin concentrations of 50 mcg/ml or higher.[393] Peripheral neuropathy, usually occurring weeks to months after drug initiation, has also been reported in patients receiving phenytoin. A single case report describes the onset of neuropathy within a few hours of drug administration.[9780] Adverse GI effects of phenytoin therapy include nausea/vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, and anorexia.
Avatar f tn Folic acid supplementation in folate-deficient patients with epilepsy changes the pharmacokinetics of phenytoin, usually leading to lower serum phenytoin concentrations and possible seizure breakthrough..." It however says that initiation of Folic acid and phenytoin together is beneficial. Since you can't go back and start all over again, you can take a small dose. It has been observed that as los as 1mg dose can perturb phenytoin’s levels, You may take doses lower than 1mg/day.
Avatar n tn Combining fluoxetine or paroxetine with phenytoin can also lead to increased phenytoin side effects and reduce blood levels of paroxetine. You really need to discuss the potential drug interactions with your own doctor.
Avatar n tn Hi, did you get vitamin B levels and peripheral smear of blood done? Neuropathy may or may not be associated with megaloblastic anemia may lead to these kind of symptons. Do you get these symptoms on quitting alcohol? Try vitamin B preparations along with folic acid tablets for a month or so. If no relief is seen, get MRI done or consult neurologist.
1291453 tn?1272143404 You should tell your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms while taking phenytoin, so that your blood level of phenytoin can be measured and your dose reduced if necessary. " Also, he has had a major surgery, and will need time to recover. However, any changes need to be reported to the doctor.
Avatar n tn Moban® brand of molindone hydrochloride contains calcium ions which interfere with the absorption of phenytoin. Ingestion times of phenytoin and antacid preparations containing calcium should be staggered in patients with low serum phenytoin levels to prevent absorption problems”.
