Avatar m tn In a small study, phenytoin-induced seizures occurred most often in patients with serum phenytoin concentrations of 50 mcg/ml or higher.[393] Peripheral neuropathy, usually occurring weeks to months after drug initiation, has also been reported in patients receiving phenytoin. A single case report describes the onset of neuropathy within a few hours of drug administration.[9780] Adverse GI effects of phenytoin therapy include nausea/vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, and anorexia.
Avatar f tn Folic acid supplementation in folate-deficient patients with epilepsy changes the pharmacokinetics of phenytoin, usually leading to lower serum phenytoin concentrations and possible seizure breakthrough..." It however says that initiation of Folic acid and phenytoin together is beneficial. Since you can't go back and start all over again, you can take a small dose. It has been observed that as los as 1mg dose can perturb phenytoin’s levels, You may take doses lower than 1mg/day.
Avatar n tn Combining fluoxetine or paroxetine with phenytoin can also lead to increased phenytoin side effects and reduce blood levels of paroxetine. You really need to discuss the potential drug interactions with your own doctor.
1291453 tn?1272143404 You should tell your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms while taking phenytoin, so that your blood level of phenytoin can be measured and your dose reduced if necessary. " Also, he has had a major surgery, and will need time to recover. However, any changes need to be reported to the doctor.
Avatar n tn Moban® brand of molindone hydrochloride contains calcium ions which interfere with the absorption of phenytoin. Ingestion times of phenytoin and antacid preparations containing calcium should be staggered in patients with low serum phenytoin levels to prevent absorption problems”. Taken from http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/phenyt_od.htm Our population is divided into 4 type of metabolizers ranging from rapid to slow metabolizers depending upon the speed of elimination of drug from body.
Avatar n tn Thank you for your question, you are relatively fine with Phenytoin and the seizure episodes in a form of lack of speech are the residue of a generalized type seizure. I don’t have a full description of your consciousness during the lack of speech episodes to decide whether this start is a partial epilepsy which can continue in a generalized or it is a generalized one from the first moment..
Avatar m tn Hello AB, welcome to the medhelp forum. Phenytoin can cause certain side effects like dizziness and mental confusion. Some people may also manifest incoordinate movements. Weight gain is not a documented side effect. It could be related to your alcohol consumption or wrong dietary habits and lack of exercise. An occasional one or two drink may be fine but moderate or large amount can cause significant increases in blood levels of phenytoin due to induction of hepatic enzymes.
Avatar m tn The doctor is asking for another Liver Biopsy which I don’t know worth doing if we don’t know what causing GGT go up after several types of tests? GGT can be high for several reasons. It seems like I know more than my doctors now. They don’t really pay attention and carry on with their business. I wish I studied doctor rather than engineering. I am losing faith on these business minded doctors who don’t care or not even prepared when you go visit them.
Avatar m tn Has anyone had a normal GGT with their cirrhosis diagnosis (which presumably is at least theoretically possible)? Or a GGT that eventually normalized after a period of abstinence and improving health?
Avatar f tn i want to know if there is any study about the relation between ggt and smoking.my ggt after a 2 month of quiting smoking was 22.and when i resmoke a 2 pack per day four 2 month it become 26.i read that ggt is better under 20 u/l.
Avatar f tn My husband received his blood work report back and his GGT is 299, he drinks occassionally, so what other things could be going wrong. My GGT blood work came back at 15....this is a HUGE difference.
1459736 tn?1286281755 Obesity, PBC, heavy drinking, fatty liver, and certain medications or herbs that are toxic to the liver can cause GGT levels to rise the normal range of GGT is from 5 IU/L to 80 IU/L.
Avatar m tn Turkish researchers measured gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) levels in blood samples from 246 hepatitis B patients and 151 hepatitis C patients, who all underwent liver biopsies. GGT is an enzyme found in the blood. When GGT levels exceed 51 international units per liter (IU/L), it indicates that the flow of bile from the liver is blocked and/or liver cell damage, fibrosis or cirrhosis are present.
Avatar f tn During those times I had not yet been diagnosed and was able to go back to life like normal, however after the diagnosis and being on phenytoin and switching to oxcarbazepine i am feeling awful. Dizzy, nauseated, moody, extremely tired, severe headaches that come and go. All i get from my Neurologist is these are side effects that will eventually go away. Because i never know when these symptoms will come on too strong I have missed a lot of days at work during my probation period.
220090 tn?1379167187 I have the liver panel results and they are normal except for a mild elevation of GGT. This is the first time since 1970 that they have been normal! GGT was 350 8 weeks ago. Still waiting for the PCR, but this helps calm me down.
Avatar m tn Therefore, elevated levels of AP will indicate that something is wrong with the liver only if the amount of GGT is raised as well. Keep in mind that, GGT can be elevated without AP being elevated, as GGT is a sensitive marker of alcohol ingestion and certain hepatotoxic (liver toxic) drugs. It should be noted that for unclear reasons, people who smoke cigarettes appear to have higher AP and GGT than nonsmokers. Also, levels of AP and GGT are most accurate after a twelve-hour fast.
Avatar n tn The GGT test typically helps to detect liver and bile duct injury - such as the bile duct obstruction you've read about. While some doctors use it in all people they suspect of having liver disease, others use it only to help explain the cause of other changes or if they want to find out about 'alcohol use.' For example, both ALP and GGT are elevated in disease of the bile ducts and in some liver diseases, but only ALP will be elevated in bone disease.
Avatar n tn I recently had my bloods checked and everything is normal except a slightly high GGT of 78. All other liver tests were completely within the normal range. I was also checked for hepatitis and it was all clear. My cholestrol is also very low - with a reading of 4.2. I am slightly overweight and drink approximately three glasses of wine per night. I was concerned to see that the GGT level was a bit high, but my Dr. said that this elevation on its own is unlikely to indicate any type of disease.
Avatar n tn • Congestive heart failure • Cholestasis (congestion of the bile ducts) • Cirrhosis • Hepatitis • Liver ischemia (blood flow deficiency) • Liver necrosis • Liver tumor • Use of hepatotoxic drugs (drugs toxic to liver) Hope this helps. Do consult a good urologist. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!" Avatar n tn At the same time she sent me for liver function tests. I went for the results and all was fine except my GGT was 93. (I do drink regularly). She asked me to wait 1 month and go again, which I did. I received a letter from her today asking me to fast from midnight to 9am and then go for further tests (this time not GGT) but liver profile, FBC, Lipid profile, glucose, fe studies and Hep B&C serology.
Avatar n tn Hi, I was diagnosed with high GGT (226) AST in the 80's and ALT in the 70's in January of this year. I am a 54 yo woman and I was drinking an excessive amount of wine on weekends only for the past few years. I have now discontinued any alcohol, for over 2 months. My GGT only lowered to 154 and my ALT and AST are about the same or even a tiny bit higher. I had an ultrasound and the tech told me my results were so good I should go and "sign a donor card".
