Common Questions and Answers about Penlac and nail fungus

penlac

Avatar f tn I might be in the wrong forum as well but I was prescribed lamisil after a positive test for Onychomycosis on my toenails. I was told to take one tablet a day for 3 months. My doctor did check my liver before starting and he called to say everything was normal and to go forth with the treatment. I've heard so many bad things from hair loss, death, loss of taste and I'm so scared.
Avatar m tn Soon after removing the nail tips, I started noticing my nails on my thumbs started to change colors. I went to the dermatologist and they prescribed Penlac to treat the nail fungus. After using Penlac for a while I noticed that it was not working for me. After that, I went back to the dermatologist and they did a culture and they said it was a fungus.
Avatar n tn As we age, nails thicken and become more susceptible to nail conditions and infections. Circulatory problems and use of medications also increase the risk of developing a nail condition. Fungal infection or onychomycosis tends to run in families because of an inherited tendency, but not everyone is susceptible. While some fungal nail infections may respond to topical antifungal creams, lotions, and gels, most infections of the nail plate require oral medications prescribed by your doctor.
Avatar f tn is hep c and fungal infections of the toenail associated in anyway?
Avatar f tn Hi Doctor, I got an appointment with a podiatrist and asked him his opinion on nail polish. He said that the reason why nail polish is a 'no-no' is that it traps moisture under the nail and can cause fungus!!! Yuck~!
569705 tn?1217017492 The nail plate can have a thickened, yellow, or cloudy appearance. The nails can become rough and crumbly, or can separate from the nail bed. Treatment of onychomycosis is challenging because the infection is embedded within the nail and is difficult to reach. As a result full removal of symptoms is very slow and may take a year or more. Avatar f tn I moisturize and keep my feet clean and dry, and understand I can probably never rid the foot of the fungus. Is there anything I can do or take in terms of supplements or external application to at least minimize the problem. I take yoga and pilates and sometimes refrain from doing so when I am embarrassed about this problem. I am a 67 year old female but age is not really a factor since this has been a recurring situation since my 30's. Thanks for any advice you might have.
Avatar f tn The risk of getting a fungal infection is increased by closed-in footwear, prolonged moist skin, and minor skin or nail injuries. Diagnosed by fungal KOH cultures of the nails and skin scrapings around the nails. Treatment includes topical anti fungal creams or gel. The treatment has to be continued for months sometimes. I hope it helps. Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing or if you have any additional doubts.Kind regards.
1430129 tn?1283281475 I have a nail fungus that I've dealt with for nearly two years. I have had my doctor prescribe cream, I also took Lamisil (spelling?) I went to the dermatologist with my son yesterday, and he told me to file the side of my nail with the fungus all the way down, he said in order to get rid of the fungus that's in my nail, I have to get rid of that part of my nail. Is this true? I also think I have a fungus on one of my toenails.
Avatar f tn I went to the doctor and was told I had nail fungus and needed Lamisil. One tablet, once a day for 3 months. They took and ran tests of my blood to test my liver and they said all tests came back normal. They went ahead and said to begin taking the medication. I'm 21 and relatively healthy. I'm afraid to take Lamisil though. I've heard the side effects are horrible. Should I be worried?
Avatar n tn It appears as though both of my big toes have a new nail growing in underneath the old nail. The old Nail is raised up quite a bit compared to the new growth, which is about 1/4". I also can see a line on both nails that appears to be where the new nail is at, and that is about 75% to the end of my toe. The new nail looks totally fine. I'm 25 years old. None of my other toenails are affected. No pain or other symptoms of any kind.
Avatar f tn I unexpectedly got nail fungus last year, and I treated it with topical tea tree oil and I took Dr Mercola's Probiotic Packs Daily for bout 2 monts, it cleared it up and they have been fine since.
Avatar m tn Hello, Such kind of nail thickening and color change can be due to trauma or nail fungal infection also. Nail fungus also known as Onychomycosis is very common but hard to treat because of the location of the fungus that happens to be under the nails. There are different ways to treat this infection, but recent studies suggest that using both topical and oral anti fungal medications at same time yields better result.
Avatar m tn I went to the doctor and he told me that this is something that happens sometimes when a new toe nail grows and that there’s nothing to do about it, and it’ll just stay that way forever. I want to know if it’s true and that there’s really nothing to be done to return in to normal.
Avatar n tn Hi, Since your nail condition has not been given proper diagnosis ,you may discuss with your physician a nail biopsy. Nail biopsy is done to determine the cause of the condition. Based on the results of the biopsy, your physician may opt for nail surgery as a method of treatment. For patient who underwent nail surgery indications include chronic infections like fungal infections , nail tumors (which I believe is not applicable in your case) and in some trauma and unknown causes. 1930941 tn?1400107522 I had this happen due to toe nail fungus that I got after I broke the nail and then when the new one came in it had a fungus which made the grow funny and dig into the tissue. My GP gave me two antibiotics then an antifungal. In the end the nail had to come off and finally it is ok now. Let me know what happens. Best if you can find a podiatrist that specializes in diabetics.

Avatar f tn White superficial onychomycosis can be caused from wearing layers of nail varnish which like fake nails stop the nail plate receiving oxygen which would destroy the fungus The other sort of infection that is caused by poorly kept fake nail and varnish wearers is actually not fungal, its bacterial and is usually distinguishable by the green, brown or yellow discolouration.
Avatar n tn In onychomycosis(nail fungal infection) nail plate can have a thickened, yellow, or black appearance. The nails can become rough and crumbly, or can separate from the nail bed. Topical and oral antifungals are needed which are available under prescription. My sincere advice would be to consult a dermatologist and get a KOH examination of the nail and skin specimen done to confirm the diagnosis.
483814 tn?1214311480 Itook a diabetic syringe and filled the sharp tip smooth , and cleaned out under the infected nail and twice a day just inject a little of the solution under the nail . Avatar m tn The nails can become rough and crumbly, or can separate from the nail bed. Topical and oral antifungals are needed which are available under prescription. Also nail fungal infection may take a bit longer like months to go away. So it is important to use the topical and oral antifungals as and when prescribed by a dermatologist. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided.
Avatar n tn the nail on my thumb is a really dark red or even black color and it has been this way for many years now, i have been to the doctors but noone has had a solution and has just say it is normal discoloration and is not harmful so just leave it. However I really want to fix this issue, the only thing I can think of is that when i was younger i used to bite my finger nails often, not sure if that has anything to do with this.
Avatar n tn Hello, Trauma to the nail can cause blackening of the nail because of injury to the nail bed and spillage of blood in nailbed. It does not sound like a fungal infection. This bleeding can resolve on its own and if the symptoms of severe pain persists then drilling of the nail to release the blood may have to be done. Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing or if you have any additional queries.Kind regards.
