Paxil vs prozac side effects

Common Questions and Answers about Paxil vs prozac side effects

Avatar m tn Paxil is a newer medication, and if the dosage isn't working you may need to have your doctor increase it. Prozac is an old drug and I think the newer ones come with fewer side effects. It's best to discuss this with your doctor since he is aware of what will best suit your needs.
Avatar n tn how long must I be off Paxil before taking Prozac? Can I take Paxil on a Tuesday, then switch to Prozac on Wednesday? I'm a fearful pill taker and would appreciate any advice!
Avatar f tn Alternative..... Protriptilyne in Generic form. Low side effects, and no sexual side effects either. Also much more effective than Prozac. I used to take Prozac and it didn't work near as well as Protriptilyne. And it's not made in China and it is cheap. A one months supply is only $60 and thats if you pay cash with no insurance. It worked for me, maybe it will work for you also. It has a nice calm, yet energizing effect that I find very theraputic. I gave up on SSRI's a long time ago.
Avatar f tn My doc was willing to let me try Paxil so I left with a script for Paxil. I wonder if I should've tried the Prozac. I had a doc tell me once that Paxil causes significant weight gain. Should I have tried Prozac? I don't want to gain a bunch of weight or stay tired all day long. However, I can't take anything that is too stimulating, because it'll make me too jittery.
Avatar n tn Twitching, Sweating in the night while asleep and waking up soaking, Complete loss of sex drive and being unable to achieve an orgasm, Large appetite, 15 pound weight gain, strange cravings, waking up alot in the night and usually eating(every 2 hours that is exact), weird dreams, not being able to make up my mind on relationships and other little things, sores on my tongue (look like ulcers but not open), sometimes moody, and not being able to cry when I think I should and want too.
Avatar f tn Both of these are two of the most difficult meds out there, especially when you want to stop taking them. I'd go with ssris first since snris can be very stimulating, or tricyclics, or just try therapy and see if you can do it that way. I don't think either of these will give you tremors, that's usually the mood disorder drugs, but side effects are peculiar to the individual, they don't necessarily go along with the med. What's easy for one is hard for another.
Avatar m tn so that's why I ask that question... Honnestly, I don't know why I react badly to only 1 mg of Paxil... it's not only psychological side-effects, I have real physical side-effects... but starting at 0.5 mg and go very slowly can be a good choice no?
Avatar n tn I would suggest getting off the paxil while you have a chance. I've been on paxil for 5 months, 25 mg. & decided to switch to wellbutrin & the side effects are killing me. I'm missing work, my family is beside themselves with my mood swings & sickness. I've been reading the internet on paxil withdrawls & it's not a pretty story, infact, there's a class action suite against GSK the manufacturers of paxil for not revealing the severe withdrawls.
Avatar n tn There are others to try, like Luvox (no sexual side effects) or Effexor (or something like that). When I first started Paxil, I remember feeling kind of "high" part of the time, but I used Paxil for OCD, too, and I just wanted it to stop so bad that I didn't tell the Dr. that I felt high. That high / dizzy feeling stopped soon enough, but Paxil does have lousy sex drive killers. Isn't Xanax a sedative (is Klonopin, too?
Avatar n tn 2) Am I better off with Paxil/Zoloft + Wellbutrin or Buspar, or is my non-reaction to Wellbutrin a sign that it wouldn't do much in combination w/ Paxil? 3) Any other drug/combo better for my condition and side effects experience?
Avatar n tn For someone that is seeking treatment for an anxiety disorder, what are the meaningful differences between Zoloft and Paxil? I know that they are both SRI's and have similar side-effects. I guess Zoloft stays in your system longer than Paxil. I have been on Zoloft before for several years off and on, usually between 50 and 100 mgs, but have stopped taking it for about 3 months. I have not suffered from any withdrawal symptoms.
Avatar n tn I did try weening myself off, but the side effects were too much to take. The side effects included headaches, dizziness and just being tired. My MD is of no help other than he says to just get thru it. Can you offer any advice as to how to get myself off Paxil and perhaps recommend an antidepressant that doesnt cause weight gain?
459689 tn?1276573743 I am no expert, but I think that Zoloft is similar to Paxil in that the side effects are similar. I ended up on Remeron and stayed on it for many years up until recently. It is not a medication that most people think of for anxiety but a friend had tried it with a good result and I thought that maybe it would work for me and it did. Once on it, I no longer had to take anything for sleep. You take one tablet at night and that is it.
Avatar n tn MD - It is difficult enough to get the TRUTH from GSK, ELI LILLY, the FDA, and other regulatory bodies outside of a court room about the side effects and withdrawal symptoms that exist in non-pregnancy situations re SSRIs. These drugs have been on the market a relatively short time. As this is the case, what hope have we of believing that the truth (or any convicting studies) will be given openly about the long-term results of children exposed to SSRIs in the uterus?
Avatar n tn If you have been having a side effect of visuals from prozac, and you have been on it for 5 months, it is very unlikely that those symptoms will go away . But if you are wrong, and the visuals are part of a pattern, and a form of hallucinations, then you should be on a different medication. That is what you should talk to your doctor about. And possibly trying the new drug recommended could solve the problem and answer your question. Taking that medication does not make a diagnosis.
415867 tn?1323369103 I always weight the side effects vs. the rewards of any medication I put into my body. For me, the advantages of SSRIs like Zoloft, Lexapro, etc., outweigh the negatives. Keep working at it and definitley keep an open line of communication with your doctor about it. Keep us posted!
Avatar n tn Hi! I started taking paxil March 1st. I didn't want to go on any medication but, i was having bad anxiety so, now i am on 20mg of paxil. I didn't feel that 10mg was helping. Anyway, i really want a family and my DR said it would be fine if i got pregnant while i was on paxil. She also said i would be fine if i wanted to take prozac instead of paxil. I know that paxil is a classified "C" drug so, i am concerned about being on any drug while pregnant.
301302 tn?1197381128 Anyway, i know they have developed many more ssri's and double neurepiinephrine uptakes(which have too many side-effects)..why do people not talk about it..
Avatar n tn My doctor recommended I try Paxil CR and it might not have as much of the weight gain effect. Does anyone know if there is a difference between Paxil and Paxil CR and the side effects? Thanks for listening to me.
Avatar m tn No, there were no intervening events that would have increased my stress, I wasn't feeling depressed. In fact, things were going pretty well other than the side effects of Paxil changing and increasing. I have a talk therapist, thank you, but she's lost on how to help. Sometimes you have to listen to the patient; I lived with the panic attacks for which I was put on Paxil a long time before I went on it, and I know myself well. I'm fifty six years old now, I know who I am, or was.
737515 tn?1252556023 Which medications used to treat anxiety have the least chance of causing weight gain as a side effect? More importantly what medication has the least reported side effects. The idea of having side effects from medicine makes me want to stop them completely. I have taken Zoloft to have nothing but bad side effects and now Im on Sinequan now but I have read weight gain is a side effect of it :( Anyone with any help would be great.
Avatar n tn Moose, Depression can be a group of symptoms that vary with the individual. Antidpressant drugs are also similar with varying side effects. Most depressions have insomnia as a component. A sedating SSRI like paxil or zoloft might be a good choice. For depression with hypersomnia (oversleep), an AD like prozac or wellbutrin might be a good first choice. Most ADs cause weight gain. Wellbutrin usually does not. But, wellbutrin can exacerbate anxiety. Effexor affects people differently.
Avatar n tn I think Prozac at 10 mgs is good to take while reducing Paxil. I reduced Paxil over 3 weeks taking a tiny bit less every few days. Prozac made a big difference.
Avatar n tn She was like a guinea pig and now, 8 years after, she is living with side effects that have never gone : hypotension (around 8), fainding every day, unbearable headaches, kidney pyelonephritis every months, and an exhausting fatigue that keep her in her bed sometimes several days, where she can hardly eat alone. Before that, she was so full of life, making car races, flying planes, being a model for photographes, and photographer herself.
Avatar n tn Gained 50 pounds on Paxil myself, over a period of several years. Theory is they slow the metabolism, but not everyone has the same side effects. Weight gain is very common with Paxil, less common with Prozac and Lexapro, less common still with stimulating antidepressants, but they don't tend to do very well for anxiety sufferers.
Avatar n tn now and ready to to to 10mg in a couple of days. I switched to night time because I was having some side effects; 3 hrs. of very mild anxiety and about 4 hours of depression then it would ease up and got better. I am working with a medication advice nurse in MHealth and we decided I would try taking the prozac at night to try and sleep thru these side effects.
Avatar n tn I just tried Wellbutrin because I read that it had fewer side effects than others and may help lose weight (and I had just tried Cymbalta and Effexor and didn't like the side effects)...I was a little hesitant to try Wellbutrin since I had success with Prozac in the past, which works on Serotonin (like Zoloft) and Wellbutrin works on Dopamine (a completely different drug)...
1128643 tn?1262487249 Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor, amitryptiline, Paxil, trazadone, Serzone...all but MAOIs. They either had no effect or the averse effects outweighed the positive (zoloft kept me afloat by making me numb to all feelings altogether). Finally, in 2003, I was in a study for treatment resistant depression and Lexapro quite literally saved my life. I was later switched to Celexa for financial reasons. I had no problems transitioning and have taken it for the past six years.
Avatar f tn I think part of the reason I didn't have side effects from that drug is because I tried Paxil and Effexor for about six weeks prior and those gave me some nasty effects. I think my body probably built up a bit of a tolerance already, and the doctor concurred, so hopefully since you already took Zoloft for a month, you will have an easy time, too! Keep us posted!
Avatar m tn Has anyone ever switched to Klonpin and seen positive results. I am thinking of a switch but worry I will see the same side effects.
