Paxil for ptsd

Common Questions and Answers about Paxil for ptsd

paxil

Avatar n tn I have been taking Paxil for PTSD for several years. It has also markedly helped with my fibromyalgia , irritable bowel syndrome, and urinary incontinence.. When I first started taking it, it caused me to lose 27 pounds. I have heard from doctors that after a while the Paxil can "turn on you" and start causing the same symptoms it was alleviating, such as weight gain, anxiety, etc., as well as new symptoms.
Avatar f tn I have Chronic Hep C too-Genotype 1 & am interested in Vertex. Do you or does anyone know anything about this trtmnt yet?! I think it still needs to be passed by the FDA. Zoloft made me more angry in the past & gave me the runs after a week being on it. I was on Paxil after that & that didn't work either. I think I found the right anxiety/depression(I have both-PTSD). I'm on Prozac 20mg. I've been feeling better, but this week am pretty down ugh :-( .
Avatar f tn I am taking Clonazepam (klonopin) and Bupoprion (wellbutrin) prescribed by a Psychiatrist. I am also taking Ultram for pain in the chest bones. The Ultram also produces a calming effect. These are my primary meds. However I wish to go off all the meds but the withdrawal effects of klonopin are horrendous. When I run out of klonopin I use my mother's xanax to reduce the withdrawal. I want to quit all medications but I don't know in which order to do it.
Avatar f tn when I started Paxil for my anxiety, my doctor gave me Clonazepam to take for the first month or so while I got used to the Paxil (because when starting Paxil, you can feel worse before you start to feel better). So, for the purpose it was prescribed for me, it worked. If you are having short-term anxiety, it may be a good choice for you...because it is very addictive, so every day use is not always recommended.
Avatar n tn I do not have persoanl experience with Paxil, so in light of that, I can't give you my persoanl experience with this particular problem. There are many folks here who are or have been on Paxil and I'm sure they will wade in with some advice. In my humble and non medical opinion, if your sex drive was normal before you began using Paxil, you were only on it for a year and have been off it for five months, I think it's time to see a urologist.
Avatar f tn I was just prescribed Paxil 20 mg a day (take at night) for OCD, Anxiety, PTSD etc. I have only been on it for 3 days. I have been ready more bad than good about the side effects; particularly the weight gain and the withdrawal symptoms. I will stop taking this medicine ASAP if I can a couple of lbs. Does anyone have any positive things to say about Paxil or any other anti-depressant. The doctor told me I may gain 1 lb in a yr.
944223 tn?1245869858 Dear men and women.I am a 27 year old male diagnosed with ADHD twice at two different hospitals. I went to hospitals because I knew I had some issue when I would lash out at people due to my impatientness among other things I knew really weren't me. I waited awhile because I wasnt sure if it was ptsd or not.But looking back, and having my Gifted/Talented teacher tell me i was the same in elementary, i knew it may have been add/adhd.
511019 tn?1214337323 She has been diagnosed with OCD, PTSD, Selective Mutism, and Tourette Syndrome. She takes Paxil, Klonopin, and Pimozide. My husband has a panic disorder, so he and Mary share a special understanding. They are able to communicate openly about their feelings, and are very supportive of each other. I've encouraged both of them to talk with me, or other family members during times of difficulty. It's kind of a rule in our house that no one suffers in silence.
Avatar f tn There is a wide variety of drugs to choose from. Paxil has been a bad choice for some but a good choice for others. There is such an individual response to medication. I'd stay open minded. And adding on meds is the way things are done now to get an even greater response. CBT and DBT therapy have both been shown to produce great results. Mental health can be tricky especially with all the comorbid conditions you have.
1035021 tn?1296820707 T do it, cause PAXIL was really helping me for this disorder and more for panic attacks so I continue taking both meds, Paxil in the mourning and Xanax for sleep. Right now after like 5 months of being taking both I tried to go COLD TURKEY on Paxil but 5 days after that I started to feel this ZAPS inside my head and some strange electrical sensations all over my body, so I started again and feeling "well" back again.
250143 tn?1320170629 in fact many here are quite aware of PTSD ... also I am quick to let them know that I have PTSD if they start searching for answers. I have had to move around a fair bit because I rent however when a doctor doesn't listen to me I try educating them as to my illness however if the doctor doesn't seem to listen then I simply find myself one who will. I will not put my health care in the hands of someone who will not listen to his patient.
Avatar f tn Hi Hi I appreciate your reply. I have had talk therapy for 26 years and am still having it but mine seems to be a genetic predisposition chemical imbalance. And no therapy, even though it is nice to talk to someone, has ever worked. Went through behavior modification, relaxation and breathing techniques to name a few and nothing has ever worked for me.
Avatar n tn Don't exactly understand what you're saying -- you took Paxil for pain control? It's not used for that. You mention PTSD, but that's not just having a bad experience and feeling bad about it, it's something different and more complex, so again, not sure exactly what you're treating and now you're adding pot to it? When you changed your Paxil dose, did you do it under a psychiatrist's care or on your own?
561921 tn?1216605621 My opinion is that if you are aware of side-effects and symptoms going on or off any medication, you will be much better off in general. Also, don't let the side-effects cause you anxiety to get worse! :) I am currently on Paxil (10mg) and it has worked well thus far. I have only been on it for 5 days but I can feel a difference. I still have bits and pieces of anxiety here and there, but my general stress level in certain situations has vastly improved thus far.
Avatar m tn I have had anxiety and panic attacks since I was a child. It became severe in my early 20's and I was diagnosed with PTSD. I was treated with CBT which was successful for a few years. It became severe again in my early 30's and I was given clonazapam and Paxil (20mg). The first few years were fantastic and I quit avoiding many situations. I increased the Paxil to 30 mg about 4 years into the medicationas it did not seem to work well.
Avatar n tn May I ask how you were before? I have personally suffered from PTSD which has rendered me a shadow of my former self...I would go anywhere alone, fly, drive....no problem....now I am like a little mouse, scared of everything but I'm geting old self back........slowly.
459981 tn?1212193981 Not that I might not need something along with it later on but right now it works for me. Prozac worked for 10 years no problems and then it stopped working and I went on Cymbalta for a few years then it wasn't helping my depression and I was re-diagnosed then. I feel much better now.
Avatar f tn My boyfriend has been taking paxil for over a year, and his last dose he was taking was 40 mg a day. We have moved and couldn't get to the doctor he was seeing. Since then he's been to see one doctor that he informed them he was 'not right' and it seemed the tolerance to the paxil had built up and felt that the mg should be increased... other than that paxil was working like a dream. That doctor did not change the dose at all and he was stuck on another 3 month script of 40.
Avatar f tn I've been on Paxil for 2 years, diagnosed with hypothyroidism 1 yr ago... Long story short, I'm trying to get off Paxil now, hoping that my depression was caused by thyroid. I weaned myself (doctor approved) down to 10 mg, doc said I should be fine to stop taking it... Now I am having SEVERE headaches and nausea. I don't want to get back on this med, and would prefer to suffer through withdrawals, however it's very difficult to function when I'm feeling this way.

Avatar f tn All together, I took paxil for 6 years. I decided to stop taking it because it kept me from concentrating and memorizing which is vital since I am in college to be a school teacher. In addition, I gained so much weight due to the medicine. My doctor helped me get off of the paxil which was a horrible experience that I never want to repeat again! Now my anxiety has come back and it is becoming worse. I tried lexapro and it didn't help.
Avatar m tn So the other day my doctor put me on desipramine for my despression and panic disorder, and three days later I felt like absolute sh*t. I had many side effects, but one that stayed is my rapid heartbeat/palpitations. I spoke to my cardiologist and he said it's nothing bad or wrong with my heart(other than my very mild Aortic Stenosis and regurgitation). I can't relax, and I cant stop crying. Can someone please reassure me!
977053 tn?1248490023 How often have you been seeing a counselor for talk therapy? For many of us, this is the most important decision we can make in confronting this.....there is a reason for the saying, 'knowledge is power.' Gaining the knowledge to beat this also makes it less confusing and a step by step approach can be taken...keep us posted!
