Paxil and your liver

Common Questions and Answers about Paxil and your liver

paxil

Avatar n tn You not only can but should take a multivitamin, as well as a good stress B and probably some extra magnesium as well. All medications leach certain nutrients from the body, and all can stress the liver, so it's good to keep up your health when you take medication.
Avatar n tn I had been on Effexor XR 75 mg for 6 years and Paxil 20 mg for 4 years. My liver enzymes (ALT 120) were elevated and both psychiatrist and primary doctor agreed to discontinue these drugs. I was tapered off each drug one at a time over a 6 week period plus my Straterra 60mg for ADHD. It has now been 3 weeks since no further meds. I experienced severe withdrawals including: vomiting (first 3 days), nausea (for abt.
Avatar n tn t unheard of -- tricyclics have for years been difficult for some and you have to get your liver tested regularly when you're on them, but they don't for Cymbalta. I think they're going to have to start with this info coming out. I would say if you have a psychiatrist who doesn't keep up, get a new one -- I had one of those when I went off Paxil, and he pretty much killed me with his ignorance.
Avatar n tn Im taking Celexa while on tx and my hepatologist advised me it was fine to take for the liver.
Avatar n tn Robbie, the majority of us who are on anti-depressants are on SSRI's which is the same class as Paxil. They are the safest for liver patients apparently. If paxil is no longer working for you I'm sure your doc can find one that will. When celexa stopped working for me I tried Effexor and I really love it. I've had not one problem with it.
Avatar f tn RA is that reacurring anxiety?? To answer your question only ur doctor will be able to say whether it will help YOU! but in theory it should help cause Paxil is used to control anxiety disorders as well as depression. 20 years to be on Paxil is a long time, you must of been put on the drug when it very first came onto the market. Also did you tapper off slowly or come off quick? it could be a rebound effect from not having the drug. Best to have a chat with your doc.
422220 tn?1256764529 I never took Paxil, but I take Ativan for anxiety. It really works well and you can take it as needed (or not) unlike the antidepressants where you have to build up to a theraputic level and then stay on the drug.
Avatar f tn t have him so incredibly addicted. I also have heard that paxil is bad on your liver and possible birth defects! The trouble with even thinking of doing this is... he is a sales manager in an already stressful environment. He does not want to try to do this when it would negatively impact his work. Is there a way to take something to supplement the paxil, while at the same time weaning off the dosage of the paxil?
1432927 tn?1283546704 There are known liver side effects for Serzone though and must be carefully considered with current liver function + follow liver functions while on it.
Avatar f tn Both my brother and I have taken SSRI antidepressants for a long time, and we both have fatty liver and other issues. Not saying to ditch your prescriptions - as I need mine... I do try to eat a bit healthier now and mindful about what I put in my mouth and how often I exercise. Hopefully your enzyme levels will drop.... Mine had at last test, but I am awaiting bloodwork that was drawn a week ago.
345079 tn?1299202476 re better without them is to go without them, and the tapering would take several months. I would say you need to put a lot of thought and research into this decision, and measure your motivation and how you react to things.
Avatar f tn you definitely do not need a transplant. The only way of fidning out the severity of your liver is with a biopsy. A non-invasive marker of fibrosis such as FiBrosure can detect any fibrosis. if there is no fibrosis you do not have to worry. I do not think your liver is causing your symptoms. It is possible that your diabetes is causing the symptoms, but not likely. i would consult a neurologist to rule out sjogren's syndrome.
Avatar m tn I was on and off Paxil for several years. After about 6 years it quit working. This can happen with these meds. In my opinion, I would give it a little more time. If you don't feel better in the next few weeks it may be time to think about another med. You did'nt do well on Lexapro?
Avatar m tn I also wake up sweating sometimes and i have had frequent urination.I take 20mg of paxil a day and 20mg of prilosec a day.I have been tested for all STD's, my lungs because i smoke,my liver,my pancreas,my thyroid, and had a endoscopy, but everything is normal.Do you think this could be all in my head or something more serious. Please advise.
Avatar n tn You can't drink heavily on any medication. All medications are liver toxic to some extent, and so is alcohol, and with antidepressants you're now fooling with the brain. Have a drink, and stop there. Just the way it is.
Avatar n tn t have POTS before...and paxil worked....but now i do have POTS and i wonder if paxil will work the same way after all those years....but i do notice that my BP is very low since being on it... just wondering does anyone experience skip, beat, skip, beat with their heart....i find that is worse when my POTS acts up...
Avatar n tn I take paxil 25 cr now and it is working pretty good. My doc upped me to 37.5 and I noticed no difference either so went back down to 25 without a problem. I think as long as you are taking paxil going down on dose is not an issue, it's if you go off all at once but my son who is 14 and has just developed panic attacks was put on zoloft 50 mgs and it has helped him. I took zoloft first but gave me gastro problems so doc wanted me to switch.
Avatar f tn I take these two meds, why?
Avatar f tn Paxil to Klonopin in 10 days - Ok I was on Paxil (SSRI) for 9 months which targets then serotonin in your brain. Then I was weaned off of Paxil and crossed over to Clonazepam (Benzo) in 10 days which targets the GABA receptors. Now I am no doctor, but why would anyone do this? If you ask me, there has to be a better way to get someone off of Paxil. Two drugs, two distinct actions. Klonopin is a bad way of masking SSRI withdrawal and vice-versa.
Avatar m tn How well the brain is able to do this determines how bad and how long the withdrawal is, and since your brain is yours alone, your experience will be yours alone as well. Be careful and gentle with yourself, and try taking a healthy dose of fish oil, which some have reported helps to ease some of the withdrawal side effects.
Avatar f tn Thank you for your help. And yes, I do receive great relief from the Paxil compared to Zoloft and with zero complications (knock on wood.) Also, thank you for pointing out that taking more than one benzo is NEVER advised but rather necessity when in patients such as myself are hyper-sensitive to many, many other types of medications and all else has failed. Close monitoring of your liver and renal functions along with regular monitoring of the brain...i.e.
Avatar f tn I just found this, and I wanted to make a comment on the chance there are anxiety sufferers who are also being treated for breast cancer. It make be a well know issue now, but when my wife began Tamoxifen treatment following her breast cancer surgery and radiation, I saw an article on TV regarding drug interaction between Paxil and Tamoxifen. We immediately mentioned it to my wife's oncologist, and he initially dismissed it and told my wife to continue to take the two drugs as prescribed.
