Paxil and the liver

Common Questions and Answers about Paxil and the liver

paxil

Avatar n tn You not only can but should take a multivitamin, as well as a good stress B and probably some extra magnesium as well. All medications leach certain nutrients from the body, and all can stress the liver, so it's good to keep up your health when you take medication.
Avatar n tn I had been on Effexor XR 75 mg for 6 years and Paxil 20 mg for 4 years. My liver enzymes (ALT 120) were elevated and both psychiatrist and primary doctor agreed to discontinue these drugs. I was tapered off each drug one at a time over a 6 week period plus my Straterra 60mg for ADHD. It has now been 3 weeks since no further meds. I experienced severe withdrawals including: vomiting (first 3 days), nausea (for abt.
Avatar n tn This is typical -- psychiatrists in general, and I've seen a lot over many years of this crap, are pretty lazy. I learned about it because the manufacturer of Cymbalta is seeking FDA approval for using the med for pain and the liver deaths have come out. This isn't unheard of -- tricyclics have for years been difficult for some and you have to get your liver tested regularly when you're on them, but they don't for Cymbalta.
Avatar n tn Robbie, the majority of us who are on anti-depressants are on SSRI's which is the same class as Paxil. They are the safest for liver patients apparently. If paxil is no longer working for you I'm sure your doc can find one that will. When celexa stopped working for me I tried Effexor and I really love it. I've had not one problem with it.
422220 tn?1256764529 I was talking about how anxious I was and the nurse practitioner wrote a prescription for Paxil. I got the generic version and took one last night with supper. I started feeling really crappy about 9 pm and went to bed. Tossed and turned for hours then got a horrific headache, chills, hot flashes, and the inability to stay vertical for any amount of time. I also had a scratchy throat. I figured I had either a really bad reaction or I have the flu.
Avatar f tn As for going back on the Paxil, it probably would hurt rather than help the rhematoid arthritis and should only be considered if you have the conditions for which it's intended. The reason any anti-depressant could hurt is that all of them can affect magnesium absorption, and that can increase the pain of arthritis.
1722607 tn?1335747858 And to answer the actual question, paxil has no liver warnings other than people with liver disease might absorb it a little more, so it suggest to start off with a lower dose. http://us.gsk.com/products/assets/us_paxilcr.
Avatar f tn Is there a way to take something to supplement the paxil, while at the same time weaning off the dosage of the paxil? Also, is it unrealistic to hope that something natural can keep his anxiety at bay as well as paxil can? He exercises a ton, so that can't be increased much more. PLEASE HELP!!!!
1432927 tn?1283546704 Recently, I was put on Paxil 10 mg for anxiety - now my pulse runs constant 110 at night and 84 during the day with intermittent PVCs, should I discontinue Paxil - is there a negative link to beta blocker therapy? History: Chronic Anxiety (15 yrs), HPN (20 yrs controlled) Recent Cardiac MRI, Echo, Thall Stress Test all negative. My opinion is that the Acebutolol beta blocker is not slowing my rate enough and exacerbates the pvcs esp under stress.
Avatar f tn Both my brother and I have taken SSRI antidepressants for a long time, and we both have fatty liver and other issues. Not saying to ditch your prescriptions - as I need mine... I do try to eat a bit healthier now and mindful about what I put in my mouth and how often I exercise. Hopefully your enzyme levels will drop.... Mine had at last test, but I am awaiting bloodwork that was drawn a week ago.
345079 tn?1299202476 If you've only gained ten pounds on that mix, that's like gaining nothing at all. Feel fortunate. As to liver damage, all medication is to an extent liver toxic, but some are far more liver toxic than others. You'd have to research them to discover which are the worst, but as to the Paxil, it's not terribly liver toxic. Neither is klonopin.
Avatar n tn That is def the reason for the way you are feeling. I was on Paxil for over a year and would not remember anything either when i would drink. Also it intensifies the effect of the alcohol. Be careful with Paxil... it's terrible because it makes people gain a lot of weight, i gained 40 lbs. Withdrawl is also terrible. You have to do it slow or switch to something else. I am now on Celexa 20 mg and am losing the weight pretty fast!
Avatar f tn Interesting, well my GI Dr. felt my liver and didn't think it was enlarged in Aug 08. However a CT Scan I had in 2-07 said I had Fatty Liver and that it was enlarged. This is now concerning me as I have heard that after the liver enlarges, it then shrinks when it reaches cirrhosis stage. I am very worried now that it has shrunk and that is why my liver enzymes are normal now (as the liver isn't producing as much enzymes anymore due to ESLD).
Avatar m tn I was on and off Paxil for several years. After about 6 years it quit working. This can happen with these meds. In my opinion, I would give it a little more time. If you don't feel better in the next few weeks it may be time to think about another med. You did'nt do well on Lexapro?
Avatar m tn I also wake up sweating sometimes and i have had frequent urination.I take 20mg of paxil a day and 20mg of prilosec a day.I have been tested for all STD's, my lungs because i smoke,my liver,my pancreas,my thyroid, and had a endoscopy, but everything is normal.Do you think this could be all in my head or something more serious. Please advise.
Avatar m tn My friend gave me 30 lexapro 10 mg. is this going to help me come off of paxil? will I stay the same since lexapro is an ssri and essentially the same drug class? I need to know this or I will have to go to an emergency to get more paxil.
467977 tn?1262714747 Does anyone know if these are the same? I used to take Paroxetine generic (civilian world) and now realized the army pharmacy gives me Paxil but they label it "Paxil (Paroxetine)" on the bottle....hmmmmmmmmm.............
Avatar m tn ll do, the Seroxat works great for me for anxiety and depression and the Losec does stop acid very well, but I have been on them for one and a half decades and so now I trying to slowly taper, with the seroxat you can slowly taper and the withdrawal comes slowly but the Losec taper gives immediate acid problems.
Avatar n tn That's a whole lot of Paxil! It seems the Paxil doesn't work, so you have to do something. Just be aware that Paxil can be very hard to discontinue, so make sure before you do your psychiatrist knows about withdrawal and how to deal with it. And educate yourself on slow tapering. That being said, if it's not working, then you do have to try something else.
Avatar f tn The paxil effects my libido (low) and I still feel a little nervousness, but that is subsiding. It's been 3 weeks of Paxil so far. I take the Klonopin to releive the nervousness. To answer your other question, I haven't experienced anything "weird" per se....
Avatar f tn I was weened off of Effexor and now on Paxil 30mg. Sometimes during the day I get the shakes. I'm just wondering if anyone else gets shaky? I take an Xanex and then seem to feel better. Please tell me that sometimes this might just happen for no good reason.
Avatar m tn The difference is that while the Xanax really helps for the anxiety, it is not treating the cause of the anxiety. That is what the adderall is doing. Of course, not positive on that - but anxiety is a very strong co-disorder of adhd. And, I feel it is even stronger in adult undiagnosed adhd. So if you are now treating the possible cause of your anxiety - then that is good. And, I have seen this reported many times with adults.
Avatar f tn About a week later, we got a phone call from the physician, in the evening after hours, with the orders to STOP! the Paxil immediately. Apparently, Paxil greatly negates the benefits of the Tamoxifen. My wife had been taking the two for nearly a year into the five year treatment program. The oncologist prescribed an SNRI called Venlafaxine (Effexor). This did not have the interaction that Paxil, a SSRI had with the breast cancer drug.
