Paxil and pregnancy risk

Common Questions and Answers about Paxil and pregnancy risk

paxil

Avatar n tn Just this month, the American Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology released a Practice Bulletin on use of psychiatric medicines in pregnancy and lactation. Whenever taking a medication, you always must weigh the risk of taking the medicine, against the benefits. The increased risk of birth defects on paxil is pretty slim.
94902 tn?1330479667 I took 20mg of Paxil throughout my pregnancy and all went well. For me, with severe anxiety, the benefit of the SSRI outweighed any risk. Not all anxiety meds have the same safety profile - for example you should definitely avoid Xanax during pregnancy. Talk to your doctor, because even among the SSRIs some are safer during pregnancy than others.
Avatar f tn I had been on Zoloft for the past 5 months and before that Paxil (the lowest dosages for both). When I found out I was pregnant I stopped taking Zoloft but the depression and anxiety has returned. I would like to go back on Zoloft but am concerned if, because I quit "cold turkey", it's okay to do so. Should I ease back into it, or can I continue to take it as I had been? I've tried contacting my doctor but have not received a response.
Avatar n tn You're not clear on the timetable here, at least to my humble brain. Some of your symptoms are a bit odd -- did you say you went completely off klonopin and didn't suffer any withdrawal after taking a high dose for so long (3mg)? Here's my confusion: Paxil is known to pack a wallop of a withdrawal, and many of your reported symptoms sound more like Paxil withdrawal than klonopin withdrawal.
Avatar f tn my doctor wants me to start on zoloft...any one else take it during pregnancy and what is or was your dose? when i read online about it i am pretty sure they dont recommend using it in tyour 3rd trimester though? any feedback would be helpful...
445725 tn?1206388767 One drink is like two, two is like four, etc. I find that even with one glass of wine, I get very depressed also. It also gives me a depressed feeling for day or two after. It's not worth it!
Avatar n tn Hi Joy. I don't think they are safe. I am currently taking Paxil and last week had a pregnancy scare and I was advised not to take them until we figured out if I was or not. But I could be wrong.
Avatar f tn This is a simple one, you need to stop the drinking. That's really the BEST option here. IN the VERY least, you're going to need to cut WAY back. Here's some info (excerpts from link posted below): "Paxil or paroxetine and alcohol act on similar chemicals of the brain and this is the main reason why doctors advise the users of Paxil not to combine it with alcohol." " The main concern is that Paxil increases the effects of alcohol.
Avatar f tn Of course being a worry wart I researched Paxil online and read some articles linking prolactin increasing from some SSRIS specifically Paxil to increase a Breast Cancer risk. The Paxil is working for me after all of these years of feeling out of sorts. Can you explain the breast cancer scare and if I should ask my Dr to switch to another SSRI? Thank you in advance for any advice.
Avatar f tn 5CR and just increased to 25 CR with no side effects and actually feeling much better these days. Of course being a worry wart I researched Paxil online and found a study that suggested Paxil is the worst SSRI to be on and that it is the only one that may increase my breast cancer risk. I was wondering how true these statements are and should I ask my Dr to switch me to another SSRI just in case. I am 55 years old and post menopause.
Avatar f tn I have a wicked anxiety disorder, for which I take 40 mg of paxil daily. I know paxil can cause heart and lung problems for the baby. I obviously want no harm to come to our baby but I am TERRIFIED of stopping the Paxil. The last time i tried I got the withdraw symptoms of derealization and depersonalization. it was the most horrifying experience of my life. I do not ever want to feel that again. So, any advice on this would really help.
Avatar f tn My husband and I are trying to have kids. We have been trying for only a few month, however, we are not young anymore (35) and I don't want to wait a year before consulting with a doctor (as it usually recommended). So here is my question: My husband has been taking paxil for the past 13 years (10mg). From the research online I found out that paxil changes sperm DNA that reduces permeability and as a result reduces the chance for pregnancy.
Avatar f tn He has never suffered from anxiety before. His shrink upped the Paxil to 20mg and gave him a low dose of xanax (0.25mg and later 0.5mg) to take as needed. He also takes clonozapan as needed, but both these drugs make him fuzzy or put him to sleep, so he can't function/work when he takes them. The past week has been horrendous. He wakes up terrified! Sweating, heart racing, crying, and terrified to leave the house.

Avatar f tn my daughter is very anxious so the dr put her on both the cymbalta 30 mg with the paxil of 20 for one week and then 15 paxel for another week and then 10 paxil and increase to 60 cymbalta. she had a brain trauma in a car accident and has to deal with alot so is this too much. she had a seizure on the ultram but she took too many at one time for a headache..
213972 tn?1206050188 Has anyone on here taken Paxil during pregnancy and delivered a healthy baby? In my case, my doctor thinks the benefits of the medication will outweigh possible complications the drug may have on baby. I'm not pregnant yet, but trying to gather as much information as I can to make an educated decision about this.
Avatar n tn I was having a HUGE amount of anxiety and depression. Plus, my doctor and I discussed that I was actually going to be at risk for worsening anxiety/depression issues due to the pregnancy itself. It was not the easiest decision, b/c the doctor couldn't give me any gurauntees, he just shared with me that a lot of his patients have taken AD's while pregnant, and he had not ever seen anything happen as a result.
Avatar n tn t say this since I work for a pharma company that *cough* is involed in the creation of some of these drugs, but frankly, I would stay away from Paxil. I also suffer from generalized anxiety disorder and panic, and I did try Paxil initially to help with the symptoms. It actually made them much worse and had a lot of very unpleasant side effects.
903027 tn?1242253714 I think if you were prone to depression prior to pregnancy you may be at higher risk to get it post partum. Unfortunatetly there are no guarantees, but there is Paxil! Your post really hit me tonight...all week I've been feeling depressed, not really sure why. It runs in my family and I did get a bit of after my 2nd baby was born. I didn't have it all with the first one.
Avatar n tn Depression is very normal. However, I have heard and gone through Paxil and that it can cause the opposite affect. It can make depression worse, and if you miss a dose you can see the difference right away. I did alot of research on paxil and worked in Doctors offices and have seen several cases of Paxil causes more harm than good. Don't get me wrong for some people Paxil is great and for others it is bad. The Dr.
Avatar f tn Hello! I am currently going thru a detox of Paxil, hydros, nicotine, and while I was at it I stopped the marijuana. I am a wreck! It's been about 10-13 days I've stopped the Paxil - I did so with the help of my doc from 40mg gradually down to 10. I am completely off the med currently. I started taking it approx 5 years ago It's been about 3-4 days since I've stopped the hydros. I started those about the same time as the Paxil. Problem being off these is I NEED them for pain.
Avatar f tn I myself tried for a long time to get pregnant 3 years ago and finally did.I continued taking 10mg of paxil the whole pregnancy and during breastfeeding for just over a year and my daughter is perfectly healthy!!
Avatar n tn Category A Adequate and well-controlled studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in the first trimester of pregnancy (and there is no evidence of risk in later trimesters). Category B Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
Avatar m tn It seemed like I had my anxiety under control with Bupropion and lamictal but never quite cleared up the depression. So now Paxil. It has been 10 days at 20 mg. I did have a few headaches and have not had a libido in a while so I wont notice this.Just wondering aboun the increase in anxiety. thanks.
2065348 tn?1331075207 There's more than one possibility here. If you stopped the Paxil without a sufficient taper off you could have suffered withdrawal -- most people do with this med. It's also quite common with this med for it not to work again once you stop taking it and try to take it again. Nobody would advise you to be on this med when you're pregnant. So it's hard to answer, because Paxil and Effexor are the two most difficult drugs to take and stop taking and Paxil is a very weird drug.
