Paroxetine is the generic for Paxil and Alprazolam is the generic for Xanax. Is it normal to be taking Paxil and Xanax at the same time?

ve been suffering from depression and anxiety since childhood. My question is what are the similarities between Paroxetine and Xanax, and what are the differences? Also can anyone tell me if both medications have similar effects on a person; I'm currently on Paxil, but I was wondering if it was anything like Xanax? Thank you for your time.

t know anything about this medicine, but I had some kind of reaction in 2006 when my SSRI was switched abruptly without a taper!! The switch was from Zoloft which I had been on for 14 years, to Paroxetine. The new doctor also abruptly took me off of Xanax that I had been taking for eight months at one .25mg once daily! His reason for changing my meds( which were working fine) was that he didn't want me on this very low dose of xanax!!!

Hi, I'm 19 weeks pregnant and still taking xanax. I suffer from panic disorder, GAD and some agoraphobia. I've had these for approximately 3-4years, and have been taking xanax for the same amount of time. Initially i was taking a small amount but gradually it increased until i was taking 3mg per day. I was taking 3mg a day for about one year until i found out i was pregnant, i was also taking a fairly low dose of paroxetine.

Yes, because I started on Remeron in April 07 with xanax - and have begun weaning off xanax in October 07. (still taking the mirtazapine/remeron - 30 mg). It's now 4 months later, and I'm on a very low dosage of Xanax and fortunately, the extreme anxiety/trembling that I was suffering from has not returned. The Zoloft, the Xanax and the Paroxetine. But the doctor not listening to my complaints of vision distortion left me no choice in my mind, and to be honest, at that time, I didn't know any better. Paroxetine has a bad profile for vision side effects, but I wasn't aware how bad this medication was until I had been on it for six weeks.

I've been on Paxil, i.e. Paroxetine for about 6 years now. I ran out about 5 days ago. As has happened in the past after quitting Paxil my sleep is interrupted with such stressful nightmares. I mean I wake up and I am either screaming and my heart rate goes sky high. I am a about 3 days from when i can get another refill. I don't think i can make it and have so much to do this week during the day. When I call my doctors office and especially on call, they go berzerk.

So I have been taking Paroxetine(Paxil) for 4 months now and it changed my life, took away my O.C.D. and my social anxiety. But i had side effects so i started taking Bupropion(wellbutrin) So after 1 days dose which was 1 pill twice a day, I had my O.C.D. back about half as bad and my social axiety came back about half as bad. So i stopped taking the Bupropion and i am still taking the Paroxetine but it's not working as well as it did before.

So My primary care doctor put me on a low dose of xanax .23mg once a day at bedtime. THis worked perfectly with the Zoloft, but they wanted me to go to a phyciatric clinic to get the xanax since it is a controled substance, eventhough it was a low dose. So I went to this new doctor who immediatley had a problem with the xanax and said my Zoloft must not be working anymore.I dissagreed with him, but he kept insisting that Paxil would be better at controlling both the depression and axiety.

Usually after 2-3 weeks or so, it kicks in. Sometimes a doc will prescribe a benzo like Ativan or Xanax during this time to address this temporary increased anxiety. Also, a good rule of thumb when starting an SSRI is "start low, go slow" which it seems you're doing. Best wishes!

I have also suffered with Panic Disorder and Panic Attacks since 1982, for which I take Paroxetine and Lithium Carbonate. And Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), for which I take Omeprazole. My doctor has also prescribed Xanax (0.5 mg), as needed for the panic. Ive been switched from Paroxetine to Zoloft as am looking to try for a baby and this is supposed to be 'safer'. My doctor has changed me over gradually. I took Paroxetine 20mg for 2 weeks plus Sertraline/Zoloft 50mg, then went to Paroxetine 10mg and Sertraline/Zoloft 50mg and 5 days ago I've stopped Paroxetine altogether and am now just on Zoloft 50mg...I've went to the doctors yesterday because I feel terrible terrible - headaches, feeling incredibly depressed and crazy!

My paroxetine is 40mg, and metoprolol is 25mg. Are they safe to take together. Is one an upper, one a downer. I take Paxil in the morning, metoprolol before bed.

If a person has anxiety issues or panic attacks, they can be prescribed paroxetine for example which can be used as a preventative and maintenance med for symptoms. Xanax or ativan is not a preventative or maintenance drugs and is addictive, and should only be taken periodically for panic attacks. Ask the doctor how to quit them if you are addicted.
