Pain in knee cap when running

Common Questions and Answers about Pain in knee cap when running

knee

Avatar n tn It includes the articulation between the tibia and femur (leg and thigh) and the patella (knee cap) and femur. The most common knee problems in running relate to what is called the "patellofemoral complex". This consists of the quadriceps, knee cap and patellar tendon. What is now called patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) has also been called runner's knee, anterior knee pain, or chondromalacia of the patella.
Avatar f tn Summer 2016 I also noticed when I would be sitting in the sun with my knee bent it would cause a burning sensation only in the right knee which was painful. Just wondering if you think it's bad enough to go see an orthopaedic doctor or will I just have to live with it? I'm moving to Canada soon and because I'll be going skiing/snow boarding I'm a little nervous with it, also it would be nice to be able to kneel.
Avatar f tn This time around, i have been having a very sharp pain under my knee, inside the knee cap and on the side of my knee (laterally) Its like its locking, catching and occurs mostly when i walk, i cannot straighten the knee fully. It also happens either after walking awhile like 5-10 miniutes or right away. Sometimes i dont have a pain occurrence at all until the end of the day after overuse. Did I tear something this time hurting my knee?
Avatar n tn t remember which) are too weak (due to the fact that my knee are still growing) to keep the knee cap from sliding over to far and causing inflammation and swelling in the knee. So, it would be great if someone knows what is wrong and what it is called. Thanks.
Avatar f tn My knee is stiff and painful today underneath the knee cap where the pes anserine tendon inserts and to the inside of the knee cap (medially). I also have pain in the middle of the back of the knee, is especially sharp if I push into it. In terms of comfort and daily activities, I am having no trouble walking except that my knee will get a little swollen (very slight) and stiff if I walk a lot.
Avatar m tn i started to get a jolting sharp pain on my left knee i think coming from the knee cap or around the sides of the knee cap. it went away the next day but came back again few days later...... it seems to come when i just walk on the knee not every step but a certain pressure of my steps. Someone please help dancing is my Job and before i dish out money to a doctor i would like to try to understand what im dealing with. PLEASE HELP!
Avatar m tn Hello, thanks for responding the pain has not gone away and it has been almost three weeks, the area of the pain feels to be a little under my knee cap in front and slightly moving to the left side of the knee cap area. When I bend it and try to put weight the pain is a instant sharp shooting pain and it looks a tiny bit puffy on the left side of the knee cap but I put ice and it don't go down. Had xrays done and I was told by ER dont look bad, should I not listen and get a MRI?
Avatar m tn Hello, I have been having pain mainly in my left knee above and to the left of my left knee cap. I have had X-Rays and a MRI to see if any problems can be found. The doctors said they have found nothing wrong. I went a physical therapist around April of last year during spring track. He said I didn't have enough thigh strength. I do the exercises daily he instructed and they seem to not work anymore. Right now I am running winter track.
Avatar m tn Over the next several months I gradually got better, but began to experience a dull stiffness and pressure in my knee cap. Temporary relief would come from rubbing the knee cap gently, primarily on the inside of the knee. I began running again in the summer (8 months post injury) and immediately noticed that I had some new pains associated with running. The head of the fibula bone at the knee would feel sharp pains, on and off, unexplainably.
Avatar f tn Older woman here, developed knee pain 2 months ago. It thankfully went away, but then about a week ago started hurting again, this time in different location, just to the left and medial of my knee cap. Every step is excruciating, only way to describe it. Guess I have meniscus tear? But has anyone experienced this type of horrible pain with Every Step? If so did you find a remedy?
Avatar f tn Now in 08 i have 3 bulging disc, possible tear in knee, ankle pain and burning and pain running down my leg. The VA said i got dds, and said my ankle and knee does not affect my back. does this kind of injury cause dics bulging or dds [dergenerative disc disease]. I feel like in a couple of years i want be walking at all...
670987 tn?1284498786 Hey everyone, I am pregnant with my third child (about 17 weeks) with this pregnancy it has been one thing after another. First of all I have headaches everyday, now for about the last 5 hours or so, I've had a constant throbbing pain in my knee cap on my left leg. There is a bruised colored knot on the left side but that isn't where the pain is. The pain is around the bottom of the knee cap itself. I've tried a heating pad, ice, tylenol, etc. Not helping.
3147730 tn?1343154021 Did you do your PT after surgery? I had surgery back in Mar 2012 for this. I had intense thearpy 2 x weekly for about 2 months. I have my full range of motion BUT like you my knee cap gets off track & I have to jerk my knee back in a quick motion or try to maunevere it until I can hear the pop. It is called an unstable knee cap. Look on line for knee excersices you can do to strengthen your knee muscles & ligaments & even the knee cap. You need thearpy, not pain management.
Avatar m tn have a knot on knee cap when to doc. 1974 said it was like munchhousen something and not the one for women doc.
5715171 tn?1372914664 I ran a mile. I started stretching and *bam* my left knee started to feel weird. When I stand, or make my leg straight it feels as if it wants to pop or something, not sure how to explain it. I get a small sharp pain when I bend my knee. I might have overstretched it? I don't know what to do and I need quick answers to know if I should keep running or take a break? I'm 14, female. Thanks.
1603542 tn?1297734997 If you have Patella Femoral Syndrome you should have pain located around or under the knee cap. It is most common in runners. It is one of the most misdiagnosed running related injuries. Pain is often aggravated by bending because this causes the most motion of the knee cap over the femoral groove. I assume your physician agrees with your diagnosis. The treatment is what your physicians are telling you....
Avatar f tn I have had pain in my left knee for about 2 years, (18 year old, female). I recently went skiing and the pain flared up. Initionally I wasn't going to make an appointment at the orthopedics, but after a week the pain didn't change. Today while running up the stairs I fell and landed on my left knee, it has three small bruises (inner side) about an inch from the knee cap, although the whole area hurts, it's not all bruised... is it something I should worry about?

Avatar f tn The leg can be straight or bent and the sensation can occur. No problem walking, running, no side knee problems. Likewise, at times, the pain is non-existent in the same postions/situations. Do not recall bumping it, however could have. Anyway, really odd. Appreciate any comments on what this might be.
Avatar m tn Is the pain under your knee cap or tendon? From what you are saying it sounds like your saying under your knee cap. You could have patellofemoral syndrome; very common for cyclists (read your bio). Try this website. http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/sma/sma_patellod_sma.
1308443 tn?1302693321 I forgot the name of the condition but it is when the cartilage behind the knee cap gets soft. I just question whether there is really NOTHING to be done. It is very painful and common in teen girls so you would think there would be a fix.
Avatar f tn I would advise you to consult your primary care physician for evaluation of pain. In the meantime avoid exercise as this could aggravate the pain and take OTC Naproxen for pain relief. Regards.
Avatar m tn Felt pain in right knee when pulling sofa forward about 4months ago. At the time I had no swelling , no continuous pain or knee wasn't buckling. However, when I've tried running I can't totally put weight on right knee. When I'm lying on my back, and bend my leg there's no pain. When I starighten my leg I can feel pain.ive tried holding my leg halfway and the pain is there around my right knee.ive not been to doctors because I have no "major symptoms".
Avatar n tn my friend kicked me in 5th grade and i got a HUGE bump underneath my knee cap and im now in 8th grade and the bump is still there. it hurts when i run and sometimes walk, sometimes when the pain is really bad the pain shots up my leg. what is wrong? i went to my doctor and he said to put ice on it and that i needed to get an x-ray...so i did and nothing showed up...what is it and how do i get rid of it?
Avatar f tn But no use, then had advised me to wear knee cap for few days. I was feeling better with knee cap. I removed it after 25 days, it was little better for 2 days, then again the pain is back. After few days, went to orthopedic, he said no problems and advised me to do some exercises. Then also no use. I have still have the pain in my knee and following parts....couldn't talk for more than 10 mins. Could you please advise me how to solve this and become normal.
Avatar n tn I have had chronic knee problems starting in my freshman year of high school (4 years ago), when my knee cap shifted out of place almost an inch. I did 2 rounds of physical therapy which helped my knee get back into place. A few weeks later I fell on it very hard, against the side of the bath tub, and it caused me to pull my siatic nerve. My bad knee and whole leg went numb for about 2 months.
Avatar m tn I was putting in padded flooring in my home gym for about 4 hours. Since then I've had pain in my right knee only when kneeling on my right knee (like when tying shoes). It's to the side of the knee and feels like something is being stretched laterally at first, before I get a sharp pain that feels like it's stinging/tingly. It is not completely on the side of my knee, but in the softer area to the side of my knee cap.
